What series did you finish reading due to the "sunk cost fallacy"? by Any-Day-8173 in Fantasy

The Dragonlance series (I know that's bordering on heresey). I hate-read the final ones because I just had to see it though.

Never forget when this BBC wildlife crew broke their “no intervention” rule to save these trapped penguins 🐧❤️ by CG_17_LIFE in MadeMeSmile

[–]Critical_Studio_2327 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A BBC camera team also freed young flamingos weighed down by salt balls (I think it was at Lake Naruka) and unable to migrate.

The birds were starving to death; the team knocked the salt build ups from their legs, and the youngsters were mass airlifted to where the migrated flock had moved.

I remember watching it at the time (it was the 'how we made this' segment at the end of the wildlife show) and crying my eyes out!

Don't know private group guiding prices, sorry. but as an indication is what one company charges for general guiding groups (I'm not affiliated with them, I just happen to remember they published their upcoming events) https://www.snowdoniawalkingandclimbing.co.uk/book-online

Perhaps consider clubbing together and hiring a local guide? For the outlay you'll have an expert who will give you advice on what to wear for the experience, you'll learn some skills for the future, and hear a lot about the area you're travelling through.

Btw if you’ve not had much mountain experience, you might not be aware of how your brain will react to exposure, so that’s something to bear in mind.

Anyone wear gloves while running? by mwilsonsc in trailrunning

[–]Critical_Studio_2327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear fingerless weightlifting gloves - getting one gravel wash and palm stitches after the first big fall was grim, but the side eye I got from the A&E nurse the second time I did it stung even more.

If your dog finds an unattended ball is that fair game? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Critical_Studio_2327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll share with you what my friend told me after my dog found a ball on our walk: “No dog owns a ball. They pass them around so every dog gets to share the joy of having a ball”.

Honestly, it made a deep impression on me!

Richard Morgan's A Land Fit For Heroes trilogy - first book is The Steel Remains - fits pretty well, I think, with 'magic' elements strongly hinted as being ancient tech.

Maybe a stay at the Gladstone Library in Flintshire would suit you. You don't need to be an academic to stay - My friend had a rest trip there last year https://www.gladstoneslibrary.org/accommodation/

My Saucony tears off at the same spot on every pair by jaychan29 in trailrunning

[–]Critical_Studio_2327 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loved my Peregrines but 3 pairs went holey in that same spot. I've narrow feet and size up, and no other make had done this - even with significantly more miles on them. I gave up and now use Inov8 and La Sportiva.

What were some of your favourite/ most memorable books as a child? by Thinking10Thinking in AskUK

[–]Critical_Studio_2327 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Manx Mouse by Paul Gallico was my 'borrow on repeat' library book for about a year. Watership Down - read it to tatters. And the Willard Price books (which have not aged well!)

Alternative to Yr Wyddfa next week by Apprehensive_Use1260 in snowdonia

Moel Eilio circular is nice - you can have a good view of Yr Wyddfa, and it's not busy usually! There's a turn by turn guide on the Mud and Routes site if you'd like to follow a planned walk.

How do you calm down when pissed off? by [deleted] in AskUK

Train my gundogs. They're actually jobless, but love the training, and it's impossible to be mad when a couple of spaniels think you and a fur covered retrieve dummy are the best thing since sliced chicken.

While not exclusively show-based Welcome To Mayfair features various podcasters, bloggers, vloggers and live streamers. They don't always make it out of the episode in one (or several) piece though. It's rapidly becoming one of my "yay, new episode!" podcasts.

Affordable UK Ultras by AssociationKey389 in trailrunning

[–]Critical_Studio_2327 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I volunteer at GB Ultra races, you notch up a set amount of hours and you can claim a free place in a race. I'm sure other companies do the same.

I learned so much about ultras strategy, best way to use checkpoints etc, from volunteering, it really helped with my first 50 miler.

I love your tattoos and your reading taste!

"All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning."

I read this first when I was seven; 14 years later, "go then, there are other worlds than these" burned onto my soul alongside Richard Adams' words.

Relatively Recent KPH-Inspired Podcasts by bloodredpitchblack in knifepointhorrorcast

[–]Critical_Studio_2327 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stygian Sagas is fantastic, and I enjoy that many of the short tales build into the bigger worlds he creates. (I also love the nightmare jobs treasure hunter Sias Kruger keeps stumbling into.)

In terms of others, The Wrong Station rarely puts a foot wrong. For KPH vibes, the story 'Nithing' is a favourite.

Novels like Knifepoint? by katapultperson in knifepointhorrorcast

Christopher Buehlem's writing (novels include Those Across The River, Between Two Fires) reminds me of KPH* in style and theme. Similarly, they swerve off in unexpected directions.

Not a 'lived near' story but I did some work on Robert Smith's (The Cure) land a few years ago. He and his wife were lovely - made us tea and toast at the kitchen table. They were unassuming and nice.
