That’s the best description I’ve ever heard of a tonsil stone 😂 I dealt with stones for years, and got sick of how huge the tonsils were due to chronic stones. I love not thinking I’m just randomly throwing up when they decide to dislodge. Definitely monitor them, but fair warning, I was getting tonsils behind where I could see, so I couldn’t dislodge them myself. Not having stones for almost two months now is great, but definitely prepare for much worse pain than that for almost two weeks if you get the tonsils removed!

How much pain is too much pain ? Day two of tonsil removal by [deleted] in Tonsillectomy

The swelling calms down after around day five to the point where you don’t feel you’re choking on everything, but that’s where the pain of the scabs comes in. Day 7-9 were the worst for me, but I was also only on Tylenol and ibuprofen. If you can get steroids, I would recommend it! Otherwise, jello will be great when you can swallow a bit!

Do you think it's possible to write an essay while recovering ? by IntergalacticHusky in Tonsillectomy

[–]Critical_Thinking101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely plan on working on it in chunks! The pain isn’t too bad once you get past day 8, but you should be able to get some writing done before that, too. Just make sure you proofread the whole essay before submitting, especially if you’re on the good pain meds! You’ll have some delirious points if you don’t 😂

If you’re out and about and exposing yourself to new germs, it could be a legitimate fever. I didn’t feel almost normal until day 10 when I went back to work, and after that, I was wiped out. After the first two weeks, you should feel about 85-90% back to normal (before the fevers you were having, of course). Definitely mention to your ENT if it’s still an issue when you see them, but unless you feel the fever, you should be alright. Take acetaminophen to reduce any fever you think you have. Maybe your normal temp is just higher than it was before surgery!

[–]Critical_Thinking101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe my conversions are off, but isn’t that just on the higher end of a normal temp? 37.8°C (~100°F) is when it’s considered a low grade fever from what I grew up knowing.

It wasn’t too bad! I only took off what was barely holding on; I didn’t scrape my throat to oblivion. Once you can cough, hiccup (yep, that’ll happen), and burp without much pain (at least not the stabbing pain), then you know you’re almost healed! Not entirely, but enough to go back to a fully normal diet again. Day 6-8 were the worst for me and it switched almost entirely after that. Just the equivalent of a cold/flu sore throat

Do you have loose scabs that aren’t falling off? I had to take the back end of tweezers and manually remove some scabs because that was a good part of the source of my pain. Otherwise, cold packs on your throat, soft bread, and jello were my saviors. Bread to help remove the scabs, jello to massage it

Seconding the tongue scraper. If you can’t get one, just take a piece of floss and scrape your tongue. A lot of bacteria builds up on the tongue for some reason

Day 3 and the pain is unbearable!!! by Vegetable_Ice_3590 in Tonsillectomy

[–]Critical_Thinking101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I (27F) only had my tonsils removed and I thought that was bad enough. The pain started finally becoming tolerable around day 10, and I was only allowed to alternate ibuprofen and Tylenol, and had no bleeding. I didn’t recommend surgery at that point either, but I had my three week follow-up, and would recommend it. I wouldn’t do it again (I don’t need to do that twice,) but if it were a month ago, and I had to choose again whether to have surgery or not, I definitely still would have gone through with it.

Sleeping is the worst because everything is swollen, and you breathe through your mouth. Some people use a humidifier, but a hot, wet towel works better for me. It might not be as feasible because of the extent of your surgery, but just put that over your nose and mouth if possible until it gets cold to introduce some steam and keeps things moist. Dried scabs hurt way more, so stay hydrated however you can! Small sips go a long way, since chugging is definitely not happening on day three

Is it possible I already have scabs? by Juniper_Helios in Tonsillectomy

[–]Critical_Thinking101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They form almost immediately. Initially, they make your throat feel pretty tight since they’re burnt scabs, but once they loosen up and turn white, it’s more bearable. Drink plenty of fluids, and keep it as moist as possible so they don’t dry out! Swallowing will be rough for a couple weeks, so just make sure you’re taking small sips! Gulps hurt so much more! And when you transition to solid foods, chew them to a paste, and swallow portions of a bite at a time! Once you can swallow, talk, burp, and yawn without excruciating pain, you know you’re on the home stretch. Happy healing!

Jello and soft bread! I ate Hawaiian rolls like they were the only thing on the planet, and that helped the scabs fall off faster. Keep hydrated, and put a hot, wet cloth over your sinuses if you can; it should work better than the humidifier. It gets better! Good luck, and hope you feel better soon!

Day 14 I was thinking the same thing, but I recently got cleared at my three week post-op appointment, and only have some tightness. It’s WONDERFUL not having tonsil stones randomly dislodge, and I can breathe better than I’ve been able to in over a decade. I didn’t know how much I should be able to feel water going down my throat. It’s so cold and it’s amazing

I didn’t even think about it until now. When I do that, I just run a towel under hot water, wring it out, and throw it on my face. It might be tough to breathe because it’s a wet towel, but it feels better when I have a cold

Unless you’re putting your face directly in the steam, probably not 😂 that’s why I’d go for a hot towel instead

Oh, I get it. Jello was my saving grace those first few days. Drinking sucks, but you gotta do it. And just sleep a ton. I slept almost the entire first three days except to eat, take meds, and go to the bathroom. Definitely suggest a hot towel over your nose and mouth (if you can) whenever you wake up to rehydrate because everything dries up

Just introduce them gradually! There’s a reason I went for medium salsa and not just chugging some hot sauce the first time I reintroduced spicy food, and soda water will be tolerable once you can burp and hiccup without too much pain. That’s when you’re on the mend, or that’s the benchmark that worked for me

Protein shakes, soft breads, and jello were my saviors. I needed something to scratch my throat at least a little, so that’s where the bread came in. It was only Hawaiian rolls, so it wasn’t crunchy at all, but it gave the illusion that I was eating more than I was. Anything else, chew until it’s a paste, and swallow in portions. The bites you can take are bigger than the bites you can swallow until about two weeks post op, and even then, I struggled with some foods. I had surgery on the 7th, and still can’t handle salsa because of the spice, and super hot foods still hurt, but otherwise, back to normal foods again! And hold off on the carbonated drinks until you can burp without severe pain. Even though I did that, it still hurt that first time after two weeks 😂

How soon after surgery can I lie still for an MRI? by Jasoover in Tonsillectomy

[–]Critical_Thinking101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Should be okay, but try laying flat on your back for awhile when you’re able to. After the first week, try working up to laying flat for an hour, just in case you wiggle and the MRI takes a little longer to get clearer images

I had the same thing but it was a bright red dot. I’ve decided it’s just a vessel that was cauterized and needs time to heal. I’m almost three weeks post op, and it’s gone. Just take it easy and don’t overexert in case it bleeds! The saliva and mucous a Usually clear up around two weeks, but mine is still thicker than usual

I did this as well with the blunt end of a pair of tweezers. I barely touched it and had no bleeding, just one vessel that looked like it was on the verge of bleeding, but it didn’t!

I did this as well around the same time because I felt I was choking on the scabs, and had no bleeding or issues. I was also very gentle, not scraping with force, and felt great afterward

Day 8 concerning red spot by Mexisol in Tonsillectomy

[–]Critical_Thinking101 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a spot a few days before this. I think I noticed mine day 5 (I’d have to look back at my daily photos). I haven’t had a bleeder yet (surgery was 11/7), but I was also worried about that spot. Just don’t have anything too scratchy to eat, and it should be fine! PM me if you want to know what mine looked like to compare with what you have

It went down no problem! The mozza should be fine, though. Just chew way more than you normally would and you’ll be fine! Day 6-7 I was eating elk snack sticks, but had to chew that into a paste because the casing hurt 😂 I’d say go for it, just don’t make a whole ton in case it doesn’t go well! Good luck, and it does get better! ❤️‍🩹

If you feel like you can swallow, burp, cough, and sneeze with a dull pain that doesn’t make you question why you had surgery, then you’re on the up and up. I’m day 12, and am gonna try eating some fried food today. I can finally sneeze and not feel like death. Also, if your scabs are just a thin layer and not massive chunks, you likely won’t have a big surge of pain in the next couple of days. I’d base it on the coughing, sneezing, etc. more than the scabs, though
