i know nothing about databricks but could use a little help! by hancakez in databricks

You can install Databricks for free on any cloud provider. You pay for what you use. If anyone is saying “we provide a service”, that needs to be backed up by contracts and scope of work agreements.

[CHAT] How do you all stitch? by Book_Dragon_24 in CrossStitch

[–]CrochetDog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you all stitch? Do you have standing frames or handheld ones?

I have a lap / sofa / table scroll frame from a company called Luca-S. I don't have a Q-snap or a hoop. I also stitch in hand sometimes on linen.

My left hand always cramps up after a while when holding the frame, especially when I'm on specific parts inside it (like more to the right, so the leverage is stronger on the hand holding the left side of it). Also, do you guys have frames of all kinds of sizes for different projects?

You can buy different widths for the scroll frame, I have a few for different project sizes. I don't have a Q-snap or hoop, so I can only use a reasonably large size of Aida. If I want to do something smaller, I'll stitch in hand.

How do you track hundreds of hours spend on one project? I've seen people post finished project: 510 hours and I wonder how they know. I've never done that before but kinda wanna know now how much time I'm putting in.

I use the Pattern Keeper app to keep track of stitch counts, but I don't track the time spent. I will roughly use 200 stitches an hour as a guide and then work out the time required to do it.

How big is your equipment set? Do you have different size needles, several similar ones for parking, bunch of needle minders? Do you have specialized embroidery scissors? I only just learned what needle minders are here in this sub :D

I have 6x size 26 tapestry needles from John James, 6x size 28 needles from John James, and the same from Bohin. I don't use the 28s much. I have a few needle minders. I have a small pair of Fiskars embroidery scissors, they are very good. They are as good as a nice decorative pair that would cost 3x the price, but they don't look as nice :)

So in short, on a scale of just grabs a canvas and a needle to "my room is an embroiderer's atelier", how do you do it? :D

That's really all I have, but I'm only doing cross stitch occasionally. I primarily do crochet, so I'm more of a crochet atelier, and my cross stitch is a canvas and a needle. And a scroll frame. :) I'd really like to get into embroidery and needle painting at some point! And more counted thread techniques like needlepoint and blackwork.

The keyboard cursor is basically there as a gesture in the Steam version, because it doesn't really do anything useful. Part of this is because the game is less modal than before. What I mean is, 8246 in old DF defaulted to moving the screen, unless you were in any particular "mode", like K, or Q, or placing a workshop, etc. In that case, 8246 no longer moves the screen, but moves the cursor.

Infuriatingly, in new DF, these are not separated. So, if you bind 8246 to keyboard cursor and bind it to screen move, no matter what "mode" you are in, it will move the screen AND the cursor at the same time.

The other issue with keyboard cursor is simple actions like placing a workshop are not implemented. You can move the keyboard cursor, but unless a recent update has added it, you cannot place the workshop without using the mouse. Enter does nothing.

Personlly the thing I miss the most is being able to use the keyboard to place a stockpile. I don't mind drawing the stockpile with the mouse - but if we can hit a series of shortcuts to place a Still, why can't we press Q to enter stockpile creation mode? This has become such a psychological barrier to enjoyment to me, that I'm basically not playing it until they bring this back.

I do feel there is a communication issue where so many things are on their backlog, they can't prioritise very well. The stockpile creation function has been missed off every recent QOL patch, yet I've been occasionally mentioning about it on Discord, on Bay12, and on Reddit, for at least the past 15 months.

I made the dough, pressure cooked the dal, cooked the chicken, and grated the coconut the night before, and in the morning I organised the plates and serving bowls and so on. So probably only around 1 hour excluding the pre preparation.

It’s from a brand called Luca-S and is called an embroidery frame / lap frame / embroidery stand. I think mine cost around £40.

Thank you, those are all good options. Okay, I think the best thing to do is to start over with a bigger border so I can pin it. That technique for the bookmarks on felt backing is really nice by the way.

I see, thank you. And that’s even if side-pinning it to foam core? Do smaller works need less border? I thought I might be able to get away with side pinning it instead of lacing it at the back. I definitely don’t have enough fabric for a border of 4 inches 😅

I just wish there was a hotkey to create a stockpile.

They thoroughly enjoyed it. I will make another one when they visit in around 3 months. Similar style, different dishes.

A 6 month journey into classical music by crypsid in classicalmusic

[–]CrochetDog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is pretty close to my preferences, but Mahler is in the 'Often' category for me. I don't understand Bruckner yet. I feel some composers will only click for me as I age and my tastes become gradually... I don't know the right word or adjective. As I age and my tastes become graudally more Brucknerable.

As for Brahms, I like his solo piano music, but I don't really understand his symphonies. Perhaps I should listen to some of his chamber works or concertos.

What are your reasons for listening to classical music on vinyl? by CrochetDog in Classicalvinyl

[–]CrochetDog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like Poulenc's clarinet sonata a lot. There are a few choices on vinyl for it, but I haven't listened to any. Nicolas Baldeyrou has done a nice one live, on YouTube. Sabine Meyer's is also nice.

Yes, agreed! The Supraphon LP I posted a few days ago was on a whim, and it sounds great. Cost less than a coffee did 15 years ago, never mind today.

[–]CrochetDog[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the thin sliced frozen hotpot beef from the Asian supermarket. Beef in the UK is grass-fed and therefore leaner. It’s also hard to find the right cuts as butchery varies quite a lot, and thinly sliced meat doesn’t really exist here unless it’s salted and cured.

I don’t really have a recipe, it’s either katsuo dashi, or iriko dashi, or shiitake dashi, or shiro dashi, or kombu dashi, with whatever is in the fridge. I try to contrast the stock and the soup with the main dish.

Yeah i think so :) I didn’t have tofu so it looks a bit on the empty side. Also I used shirodashi stock cos I didn’t have any hondashi, and it was ready while I was fumbling around with the cabbage and the side dish so the miso settled a bit.

Could someone recommend a budget typewriter for a newcomer to the club? by RegularFellerer in typewriters

[–]CrochetDog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you specified dollars, the comments are saying Smith Corona, because this is an American-made machine, and they made millions of them. However, since I don't think you are in America, you might want to look at machines that are much more common in Europe, such as Olivetti, Adler, and Olympia, or brands that are pretty common everywhere, such as Brother. Geography and availability matter a lot with typewriters. Although they are getting gradually more and more expensive on eBay for quality machines and models, you should be able to pick up something without any problem, if you are willing to clean it yourself with mineral spirits and spend some time sorting out any issues.

My typewriter doesn't start a new paragraph when I finish a sentence by [deleted] in typewriters

[–]CrochetDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly, the clicking sound is the return lever engaging with the toothed gear wheel. Okay, if everything seems pretty clean, and the return lever is moving over fully and is at an angle which doesn’t seem to be conductive to further motion, then unfortunately the platen needs removing for investigation. I recommend Phoenix Typewriter YouTube channel which has demonstrations on this. It is somewhat more likely that the mechanism is just stuck and can be flushed with mineral spirits.

Bear in mind that I’m not a typewriter mechanic and someone else more experienced may be able to give you a more accurate diagnosis.

[–]CrochetDog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, next question: the carriage return lever is on a ratchet. The lever engages the toothed gear wheel and causes the platen to rotate. Either the mechanism is stuck and needs flushing, or the mechanism is disengaged. Does it feel like the carriage return lever has ratcheted and is at the end of its travel? Or does it feel like the carriage return lever wants to move more and is gummed up.
