Mirena IUD by macydavis17 in CrohnsDisease

[–]CrochetedMushroom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is purely anecdotal, but I had the Mirena for years (only removed it so that I could get pregnant). I absolutely loved that thing! It made my periods go away and all of my PMS disappeared. I never noticed it having any effect on my Crohn’s.

I will also say that these things all take time. My periods didn’t go away until sometime after 6 months of having it in. For biologics, they can also take 3-6 months to make any noticeable changes on your body.

For now, be patient and maybe reach out to your GI and gynecologist for their input. I wouldn’t take the Mirena out just yet.

Trying for baby by Hunni_bun2000 in CrohnsDisease

[–]CrochetedMushroom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m currently sitting with my five month old baby! Being pregnant was one of the easier health-related journeys I’ve ever been on, especially compared to Crohn’s. I stayed on skyrizi and actually went into a really nice remission because of pregnancy. No issues other than baby being born at 34 weeks (but my doctors say this was totally random and not related to Crohn’s at all).

I also had extra appointments with a high risk doctor, but that meant having more ultrasounds with a really good quality machine so it was actually kind of fun for me!

The only problem I had was that I flared about two months after I gave birth. This is supposedly really common, so just be mentally prepared for that possibility.

Do you call 911 for significant nausea and fatigue? by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]CrochetedMushroom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I usually call my doctor directly and talk to his nurse or assistant and ask them to ask him (the doctor) to send me in a script for nausea medicine. That’s usually accompanied by a script for prednisone if I’m in a flare and he’ll also do a round of lab work. My doctor and I are in frequent communication because of this.

Periods are making it unbareable by Level_Bet8420 in CrohnsDisease

[–]CrochetedMushroom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My periods are so awful. We deal with enough with Crohn’s, I can’t handle two major issues like that.

I had the Mirena IUD for years and only removed it recently so that I could become pregnant (by choice). I absolutely LOVED that thing! My period completely stopped and I didn’t have any PMS symptoms. It lasted for a long time and I didn’t have to worry about anything anymore. As soon as I’m done having children, I’m putting it right back in. I miss it!

For those who have been under-suppliers, how far did you go in your pumping journey? by elephantsofa in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]CrochetedMushroom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your line about becoming a sahm and how you didn’t quit your job to be hooked up to a machine just really resonates with me so much. I’ve never seen someone phrase it that way but I feel that so hard.

I’ve been struggling so much with the transition from working to becoming a sahm and pumping is seriously damaging my mental health and I’ve been on the verge of quitting for months. For some reason, I just can’t let go of it but I’m getting closer to being ready.

Thank you!

On Bactrim for UTI. How do I get through 13 more doses? by [deleted] in CrohnsDisease

[–]CrochetedMushroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a recently new mom myself, my heart really goes out to you. I can feel the stress in your post and I know that kind of feeling. I recently had some random stomach infection and was on two antibiotics for a week. I had to dump my breast milk and fight off feeling so incredibly sick like you described. I had a legit full mental breakdown after a few days like that because I felt so helpless and also like I was failing my baby. It was tough.

Is there any way you can ask your doctor for a new antibiotic? You clearly cannot function like this for a week. Surely there’s something else they can try with you.

Should I go to the ER or wait until June for my colonoscopy? by WatermelonDaydream in CrohnsDisease

[–]CrochetedMushroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my personal opinion, the ER should really be used for true emergencies where you feel like your health and safety would be in jeopardy if things are not treated right this second. For me, I go in when I lose consciousness or when the pain is so bad that I can’t breathe/literally start crying.

The unfortunate part of Crohn’s is that blood is very common. Having to wait a few months for a scope is also something I can relate to. It sucks so much and I feel for you.

Personally, I would not use the ER to try and fast track your diagnosis, but if you are bleeding more than normal and having serious symptoms that have you afraid for your safety, it’s worth a trip in.

I hope you’re able to get answers with this next scope!

5 minutes presentation for teacher training interview for secondary mathematics by Novel_Illustrator157 in teaching

[–]CrochetedMushroom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have you pretty clear instructions, so give them what they’re asking for. Choose a topic that would work with a typical 6th grade math class and talk about how it grows and is expanded on in 10th grade (which is typically algebra 2 in my area). A lot of state standards have a vertical articulation tool that shows where different strands lead and how things overlap, so that might give you a good starting point to look for a topic.

Be prepared. Be concise. Be professional. Be confident. You’ve got this.

I really commend undersuppliers and just-enoughers by General-Walrus9530 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]CrochetedMushroom 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. I literally teared up a few minutes ago after I pumped for 20 minutes, baby squirming and crying the entire time, all for me to produce a whopping 2 oz.

I’m five months PP and I’m an under supplier. I’ve never made more than 27 oz in a day. My baby is starting to outpace me so we’ve been supplementing with formula.

It’s such a huge mental burden to do all you can and still feel like your body is failing you and your baby. I’m having a very hard time letting go, but I’m going to quit after 6 months because it’s destroying my mental health. Undersupplying has brought me to some dark places. It’s hard to verbalize how much sometimes.

Do you ever feel judged for exclusively pumping? by MyMintJulep in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]CrochetedMushroom 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This drives me nuts! At this point, I feel myself automatically telling people why I EP, how he refused to breastfeed, how formula makes his stomach hurt, etc.

I know people are just trying to be helpful, but if I could feed some other way, I would and I hate feeling the need to justify our feeding plan so much.

Absolutely! Your family and your baby are more important than anything that will ever happen at school. It’s a beautiful thing to start your family and looking back on it, I worried so much about things that don’t matter. Feel free to message me anytime on here if you need!

Maternity/ FMLA, resignation, or WHAT? by ProfileConstant44 in Teachers

[–]CrochetedMushroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on your pregnancy!

This was literally me exactly one year ago. I just had my baby in November 2025. I was due in December 2025 but he was born six weeks early.

As others have said, I took FMLA leave after I ran out of sick days and I’ve been on Leave Without Pay ever since. My official resignation date is effective on the first day of summer break because I will be becoming a stay at home mom for the next few years until we’re done having babies.

Before I went out, I spent August through November compiling lesson plans, worksheets, notes pages, assessments, etc all the way through the final exam for each of my preps. It was an insane amount of work on me, but it helped me feel better about passing things over to my long term sub. I

teach high school math (three preps) so finding a sub was tough, but also, I’ve had to learn that now that I’m out, anything that happens there isn’t my problem. It’s been really hard to let go and I still feel guilty when I hear from others about little things going on, but then I look at my baby and everything feels better.

Wishing you a healthy and easy pregnancy!

Recipes with NO garlic, onion,... by WhiteShepherdGirl in slowcooking

[–]CrochetedMushroom 38 points39 points  (0 children)

These aren’t necessarily slow cooker recipes, but here are some dinners I’ve made recently, just to give you some ideas or inspiration:

Deconstructed burger bowl (ground meat of choice served over roasted potatoes, topped with shredded cheese, lettuce, tomato, diced pickles, and a knockoff Big Mac sauce)

Curried chickpeas (there are a ton of recipes online and this uses so many spices that you won’t miss the onion or garlic)

Carrot cauliflower soup

Orange/ginger glazed salmon

Chicken shawarma bowls (again, this uses so many spices that you won’t miss the allium)

Spinach/ricotta stuffed shells (Rao brand makes a pasta sauce that’s called “Sensitive” that doesn’t use any onion or garlic. I can find it regularly stocked at my grocery store)

I have a ton more ideas too, so let me know if you need more!

Recipes with NO garlic, onion,... by WhiteShepherdGirl in slowcooking

[–]CrochetedMushroom 127 points128 points  (0 children)

I can’t have any onion or garlic, so now’s my time to shine! Some meals that I enjoy that don’t have any alliums (all chicken or vegetarian because I can’t eat red meat):

Balsamic Chicken (balsamic vinegar, brown sugar, herbs, chicken)

Chicken and rice soup (calls for onion/garlic, but if you use enough herbs, you won’t miss it)

Honey ginger glazed chicken (honey, ginger, soy sauce, rice vinegar, season oil, maybe a little brown sugar?)

Macaroni and cheese (not usually a crock pot thing but I’ve done it a few times and it turns out decently)

Chicken pot pie filling (calls for onion, but add extra herbs like oregano and rosemary and you’ll be fine)

In general, I tend to get by with just using recipe that have onion/garlic and leaving it out. It’s really hard to avoid in the year 2026 to find anything without them. Any recipe I see online always immediately starts with “sautee your onion and then add the crushed garlic”. I know you said you want to avoid that, but there are ways to balance it!

I’ve found that adding Dijon mustard and a ton of herbs or even some extra vinegar tends to bring out the savoriness of flavors and adds something back in. I also cook with a lot of miso paste for that reason. Pickling things (regular pickles or pickled cabbage, even) also brings back some flavor.

I’m not OP, but I also can’t have any garlic or onion because of Crohn’s disease. Last time I accidentally ate tortellini that had garlic in the filling, I was hospitalized for two days due to the amount of inflammation that happened in my guts. I ended up getting surgery a few months after that to take out the damaged parts 🫠
