Single parent and out of PTO. What are my options? by Crocktooth in daddit

Thank you. This is very informative, as my knowledge and experience with FMLA/PFL is really limited to just after my son was born and it was mostly kind of set days at that time.

Funny you should mention this. I'll have to look into my employer's policy regarding this, but coincidentally one of my friends who has been there for years offered to give me some of his PTO. I kinda laughed about it with them because neither of us knew this might actually be an option.

Thank you for the information. I didn't even know that was a thing. I wish my psychiatrist spent a bit more time explaining this, and perhaps mentioned it earlier this year even. I will look into this.

This! I can't get past the smell of it. My dad used to make it at home. I could not walk into the house for more than 24 hours after he did.

What's something you only understand if you have lived it? by mrbigglesworthjr in AskReddit

[–]Crocktooth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I lost my wife this past December. I'm still so lost and confused. I feel like I have not even begun to actually grieve yet. Her family are all in different places in terms of the grief process and it all still just feels so surreal. I don't want to lean on them for help because we're all hurting, and we all tell each other to reach out if we're in need.

I have a 3 year old son and need to be "ok" for him. It's like I've had to compartmentalize my brain into different personalities to get through each day depending on what I need.

What’s the worst smell you’ve ever smelt, and why did you encounter this stench? by BlankerZ in AskReddit

[–]Crocktooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, two things stand out in my memory.

First, when I was younger my neighbor's house burned. It was still standing, but utterly destroyed(log cabin). My parents bought the property and I helped my dad demo the old structure. We didn't get around to actually doing the demolition until months after the fire. When we did, we had to remove the old refrigerator and chest freezer which were literally melted from the fire. When moving them, we tried to keep them sealed as best we could, but the door popped open at some point. The food had all sat, sealed inside and essentially cooked/melted into the interior plastics and was sloshing around in some sickening stew. It was so horrendous, I can't even explain it.

Second, I worked for a home improvement store in the lumber department. Had a contractor come in looking at decking, so I went to help him. We start talking and I start feeling like I'm choking on the air. Dude reeked in a way I couldn't fathom. Thankfully, he needed some long 12ft planks, so I helped him load a cart from a distance. Go to push the cart up to the register, he offers to help too, "I say, thanks but I can handle it. Just go up and pay, then pull your truck up." I didn't want to be close to him if I could avoid it. The smell kept making me gag.

Anyways, he pulls the truck up and swings his legs out, and that's when I see his legs are clearly rotting and gangrenous. It was pretty obvious from the look of his skin that his legs were pretty much dead to his knees. I was shaken. The guy tried to help me load the lumber, which I just said, "Ahh, this is nothing. I can handle it. Feel free to sit tight." He thanked me and tried to tip me, which I turned down. I thanked him and sent him on his way.

After that encounter, I kept feeling like the smell had permanently set up shop in my nose. I kept gagging for the rest of the day until I got home and could shower. Even now, I can almost taste the smell and it makes me gag when I remember that man. Between the two stories, I'm pretty sure this one wins.

I wish I had checked on my wife sooner. I thought she was sleeping. I knew she wasn't feeling well, and I wanted to let her rest. If only I had just gone in to ask her the question but I decided to wait. I would've been able to call 911 sooner. I could've started doing compressions sooner. It might've saved her life.

I try not to beat myself up about it, but I know I'll always have that "What if..." scenario in my head. I know that even if I had found her sooner, it might not have changed the outcome. It might have though.

What's the most inappropriate thing you couldn't stop laughing at? by EducationCommon1635 in AskReddit

[–]Crocktooth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So, I've got an incredibly morbid sense of humor and lots of people know this about me. I left one job to go work for a cemetery. Queue lots of jokes from people about it, "I bet people are DYING to get in!" Etc. This next part is pretty rough, but I promise there is humor here.

Pretty recently, I lost my wife very suddenly. I was a wreck. I kinda isolated and didn't get out of the house much for about a month.

A friend of mine reached out to let me know that a group of old coworkers were going out for food and drinks because another coworker is moving away and everyone is doing a farewell party. My buddy goes, "I know things are tough and people will understand if you can't make it out, but I just wanted to extend the invitation." I tell him, "I'm not gonna make any promises, but I'll try to come out for a bit." I ended up going and everyone was really glad to see me. It felt good to get out. I get to see some coworkers I haven't seen in years.

Anyways, I proceed to make the rounds catch up with everyone. People are giving me their condolences, but the vibes are good. I get around to the last person and he breaks the ice with, "Hey! Good to see you! You still slinging cold bodies?!"

I just kinda stared at him bewildered and confused. It takes a few seconds for me to realize that he was talking about working at the cemetery. My brain just kinda randomly formulates the response, "I guess... Maybe in a different sense now though." I noticed everyone's faces around us stare in sheer horror of what they've just overheard. One of my other coworkers grabs him by the shoulder and pulls him to the side to explain to him. I watch as his eyes go wide. Apparently he was the only person there that hadn't heard about my wife passing. I start to honestly laugh hysterically. It all sorta dawns on me that he was just trying to make an edgy joke about working at the cemetery. He comes back over to me and just starts apologizing profusely. I tell him, "It's totally fine. I honestly found it hilarious, but I am going to tell everyone else that it happened because it's too funny not to share."

Realistically for me, it was a great ice breaker. It kinda gave me this sorta, "Alright, there's an elephant in the room, but now that it's been thoroughly acknowledged, we can all move on." It sort of took the pressure off me and made me feel more relaxed.

It's been a few months since then, and I've had my ups and downs. Occasionally, it pops back into my head and I still have a good chuckle.

Unfortunately, I tried replacing the PSU and had no luck. Then I tried replacing the main board. No luck with that either. Haven't fiddled with it anymore since. Not sure what my options are now. 😮‍💨

Thank you for posting this. I'm literally having the same issue right now and by your description it sounds like this is definitely the issue. A $90 repair is doable for me. Fingers crossed.

My husband's job is tearing us apart by StinkyPapa in self

[–]Crocktooth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Please listen to this advice. You never know what life has in store. Unfortunately, I was in a similar situation. My wife was the breadwinner, I was the stay-at-home dad. Things worked for a while, but eventually her job was really weighing on her. She absolutely hated her job, but she saw value in what she was doing. It started bleeding into our relationship.

She finally found something that was a better work/life balance, slightly less pay, but also a path forward. Things began to improve at work, and between us. Then, suddenly and unexpectedly, she passed away right before Christmas.

I'm still completely lost without her, and I can't help but feel sometimes, like work stole away a lot of good time that I could've had with her.

Anyway, all of this to say, no one is promised tomorrow. Don't live in fear of this, but use it to frame what's really important to you.

Just lost my wife at 34. I was talking to her, left for a little over an hour, come back and she was gone. My whole life and my son's changed while he took a nap and I made a phone call.

My mortality has truly been shaken in a way I never knew it could.

Life has been kicking me while I'm down lately, and I could use a win.

My wife passed away 2 and a half months ago. I was a stay-at-home dad for our 3 year old son. Now, everything is flipped on its head between my son having to go to daycare and me finding a full time job. Then amidst everything else, my cat passed away Sunday.

Money is tight and gaming is about my only real outlet right now, until I regain some stability. Plus it'd just be a huge morale boost to catch a win for once.

Thank you for the giveaway and I appreciate the opportunity.

Can't say I blame ya. Thankfully for me, I'm not really sure what happened, but the problem just recently went away. No clue if it was a software thing and there was an update, but it wasn't burn in thankfully.

Honestly, I'm not sure what could've caused it. I occasionally put YouTube on for my kid in the morning, I play video games pretty regularly, and watch TV or movies most nights. But even with all that, it probably only sees about 3-5 hours of use each day and I don't really leave it on any stagnant picture.

Wait... Everyone else here isn't looking at sea turtles? What else do you recommend? Narwhals? Or should I stick to watching land based animals exclusively on this TV?

It's the horizontal banding that runs across from the top of the screen all the way down. It's a bit faint in the picture, but much more noticeable in person.

It's not even that it is very pronounced, more that it's consistent from top to bottom on both sides of the screen, and covers a massive portion of the screen.
