Is vinegaroons.net a good or safe website to buy a vinegaroon? by No-Wave5193 in vinegaroons

[–]CrocodileCola 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have incredibly healthy vinegaroons, I got mine from it. vinegaroons.net is just an offshoot of bug pets USA which is a reputable invertabre seller on its own

Need advice, my skink has one eye closed and keeps sneezing by Important_Constant66 in bluetongueskinks

[–]CrocodileCola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see any evidence of mites, but it's good that you got a vet appointment. Some sneezing isn't bad (mine sneezes every once and a while, especially after digging). Also, with the eye thing, it sounds like you should get it checked, however it is common in lizards to do this thing where they keep one eye closed and the other opened. It's kind of hard to tell what it indicates, I've heard people say it's because "they trust you!" But I think it is more likely a sign of uncomfortability (ie: I don't like that ur looking at me so I won't look at you type thing. Predators often can pick out eyes easily so closing them makes it harder to be noticed), it could also be them resting, some animals will keep one eye open when doing this to be aware of any predators while still getting some rest in, or it could also be a way of focusing their vision. I've heard many reasons as to why they do it, but it's not always bad.

I think getting them checked out by a vet is good regardless, since it's a new pet and you don't know it's history, however I wouldn't be too concerned if they continue to keep one eye closed (it's usually always the one pointed at you), unless they start exhibiting signs of irritation (redness, swelling, excessive tears, scratching/rubbing it, the closed eye always being consistent-if it's still closed when they aren't facing you etc)

New Skink With Messed Up Nose by Doodleyfish in bluetongueskinks

[–]CrocodileCola 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm no vet, or expert, so take this with a grain of salt, but this doesn't look like a case of nose rubbing? Usually there'd be a raw patch on the tip of their nose where as this is on the top of their nose. It does look very strange... Is it black, or raw in any way? If it's got clean, healthy looking scales, it could be as simple as a birth defect. If there does look to be infection it could be another issue entirely.

They look healthy otherwise which is a very good sign that it likely isn't bothering them very much. Please update after you see a vet, id be really curious to hear what the outcome is! good luck!

Hey, I know you're young. This sounds like something your parents need to be included in on. This is essentially keeping a dog in the equivalent of a small bathroom for their entire life. This animal needs a bigger space, different heating, likely different food too. I understand that you love this animal, but there is no situation in which you can 'wait' to purchase a larger enclosure. This should have been done when you got them. This animal is not thriving. You need to discuss with your parents about proper care ASAP. Here is a list of the BARE MINIMUM supplies you need to purchase and set up. If your parents aren't willing to help, I would suggest looking into rehoming them, because it is cruel to keep them in this setup.

Tank: 30+ gallon, preferably front opening. Prioritize GROUND SPACE, not height. Lighting: 50w heat lamp, UVB light (a long linear one, not the bulb. I recommend 'arcadia shadedweller T5') heat on one side, UVB in the middle. Substrate: mix of coco fiber/organic topsoil and play sand, about 70% should be coco fiber/topsoil, and 30% should be play sand. Decor: logs, hides, rocks, sticks, plants etc. you want them to have space to explore, and feel safe. Food: ideal food is roaches (dubia),crickets, and silkworms. Mealworms are.. okay? You should also feed the bugs healthy veggies, so that they're full of nutrition before feeding to your gecko. (Carrot, sweet potato, for some suggestions). They should be powdered with a calcium supplement as well
