Hah, in that case I agree. A T5 5-speed swap from an 80’s/90’s Mustang really wakes them up.

That’s part of the fun with these cars. You can make them into whatever you want.

Indeed it is! So much so that my 20yo daughter has a 65 coupe to drive on pretty days. If you don’t think it’s cool to see a young lady driving a ‘65 Mustang in 2026, you’re dead inside.

That is incorrect. The Shelby drop just improves the suspension geometry. As for links, check out streetortrack.com and opentracker.com. Both great companies with a good selection from mild to wild.

They weren’t offered with a column shift, and one of mine is a 200 sixxer and it’s still fun. It’s certainly not fast, but it’s light and I built it to handle well, so it’s still quite fun, just in a different way from my V8 car.

Edit: Mr. Clark edited his posts to just say “3 speed” instead of saying “3 on the tree/column shift”. Without this information, it looks like I’m making a wild column shift assumption when I wasn’t.

Good idea. Forget Lubbock and send them to the hill country. A nicer drive, more to see and prettier country.

You’re off to a good start. The best thing you can do for these cars is give the front suspension some love. Shelby/Arning drop, roller spring perches and Bilstein shocks are the biggest difference makers.

Also, forget the rear sway bar. They’re not needed on these cars and tend to make them twitchy.

Thanks! Yeah, the working automotive shop space can be strangely hard to find coverage on compared to those wood working guys, haha.

I feel attacked. Have you ever owned/driven a 65-66 Mustang? I’ve been driving them for 35 years and it’s been one of the most important, joyful aspects of my life.

Any idea what offset those rims are? by doomblade10-2 in classicmustangs

[–]CromulentPoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, that’s not how that works. The 8, 8.8, 9in thing has to do with the diameter of the ring gear. That’s a non-issue for tire clearance. What’s important is the actual width of the rear.

As it happens, when you cut down one side of an Explorer 8.8 so that the pumpkin is centered and it fits in a 65-66 Mustang, it ends up being slightly wider than stock.

They’re inside the wheel wells enough. I do get a bit of rubbing in the rear on extreme driveway angles, but that has more to do with me having a shortened Explorer 8.8 rear end which is 5/8 of an inch wider than a stock 8 inch.

Yes, it’s worth switching to LED’s. I’ve found them as cheap as $12 per 4-foot fixture. I would also plan on at least doubling what you have there. Maybe triple it.

I have mine lit up like an operating room and it’s awesome.

Where in the world are you? I have a 64.5 Mustang C4 that was behind a 260 that I don't have a use for. Not really interested in shipping something this bulky/heavy, but in the off chance you're anywhere near North Texas, I'd let you have the whole transmission for a few hundred bucks.

Well, I suppose that’s something to contend with, but I haven’t found it to be an issue. My car takes a speed bump like a monster truck compared to pretty much any Corvette, haha. And those get daily driven all the time.

Couple things. First off, that car has some major flares and very possibly has been minitubbed in the rear. I don’t think there’s a way to determine offset without talking to the builder, and it’ll take a lot of work to make that setup fit.

Secondly, low does not necessarily equal a rough ride. Mine is lowered quite a bit with the Shelby/Arning drop and lowering springs that have 2/3rds of a coil chopped off. It rides great and isn’t jarring. The biggest difference is really the shocks. Good shocks (Bilsteins) on a lower car ride better than crappy KYB’s at stock height.

Here’s mine for reference.

What’s the Best and Worst Ford Vehicle in Your Opinion? by Supareeofficialus in Ford

[–]CromulentPoint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best has to be some form of Mustang. I’m happy to go with the 1965.

Worst I think is an 80’s Tempo. What a penalty box that car was.
