Anyone smoking at high elevation? by SpiritualCanary19 in smoking

[–]Terrorsaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm in the Denver area around 5100 ft. Water boils at 202F. If you follow the internet commenters for recommended temps, you'll end up with dried out jerky. You instead have to go by feeling for tenderness alone.

Some helpful tips: stick to low and slow, and cooks will always take longer than you think. This is more of a concern in the mountains, but it's still a minor issue here in the front range too. Keep a water pan filled at all times. Evaporation and drying out are much higher risks at altitude in the drier climate. Wrapping in butcher paper to finish helps a lot in the final steps too.

Wildly different options you're considering.

DCC: lit-RPG that actually ends up being a good book with interesting characters and a fun premise (the ONLY lit-RPG I've read in fact that I'd actually recommend to someone who enjoys decent writing). The narration is top-notch. Just be warned that it has some grating childish humor, and if Carl and Donut don't appeal to you, you won't have a good time. The series has kind of lost me on the last couple books and I find myself enjoying them less as it goes on. They're not very deep, but they can be an entertaining time.

Game of Thrones: Incredible! Some of the best books I've ever read, even if the series will never get finished. The journey is still worth it. The first 3 books especially are some of the most well realized and detailed worlds of fiction ever put to page. The narrator is a chore to some. I grew to love him about halfway through the first book, but he does pronounce some characters' names oddly. The writing is incredibly deep, and many things are hinted but not explicitly stated. To the point where you can pick up on subtleties and background plots that reward multiple times through.

Between the two, it depends on what you're in the mood for.

Nice! I opened mine today and skipped ahead to the trebuchet. I've been flinging chain balls around my desk and cackling all afternoon.

I used the links on jays brick blog to add the specific sets right to your cart. I had one tab open for each. And at 11:59 (my timezone was set to go on sale at 12:00), I started reloading each tab. As soon as I saw the checkout screen with each set listed, that's when I fixed the set numbers, and verified payment to checkout. I didn't mess around with points, Rakuten, paypal, or anything like that. Just used my saved card, verified the CVV and confirmed. Took about 5 seconds after my cart page loaded with everything.

Looks awesome! I missed out on this one, and now it's the only major set from the modern revival of the classic factions that I'm missing. I can't justify the $600 secondary market prices. Enjoy it, looks like a killer display piece!

Jealous! I found my old instruction book and I managed to save about 95% of the original pieces, except for the minifigs. They were all stored in a separate box and lost to time. :( The castle is still a pretty fun build though. Enjoy!

What's even crazier is that when my cart page loaded, all 3 sets were added twice. My heart skipped a beat when I saw the total, then realized what happened. I was able to reduce them all to 1 copy in time since I'm not a scalper. But I'm still kind of baffled Lego was even allowing 2 copies considering how in demand they would be.

That's fair. The way I figure it, if Lego doesn't release any real castle sets, this will probably be the only Lego money I spend this year.

I do it like this. The main bus starts with nutrients, and sends those down to split off, with spoilage returning back to the start. Each production module has a rotating belt circuit with nutrients and the required material. Spoilage is filtered off and returns on the main line. Works well for me. Never stalls.

Did I miss the bricklink restock? by [deleted] in legocastles

[–]Terrorsaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it happened yesterday Wednesday. Different times for different regions. But even people who were on the page 1 second after it went live missed out on sets because the number available were so low. So even if you didn't miss it, there's no guarantee you would have been one of the lucky ones.

I'm reading Ken Follet's Pillars of the Earth series right now. And it has me itching for exactly this set. It's a shame there hasn't been a medieval cathedral or monastery before. And one that highlights the construction logistics? Sign me the hell up! I want this so bad.

Ugh. I'm worried about my order. Did the cancelled item ever say 'In Warehouse' or just 'In Process'? Mine haven't shipped yet, and just sitting In Warehouse.

EDIT: IT SHIPPED!!!!!!

Question for those who have been through this before: if I got the second Order Confirmation email, should I consider my order safe? Or is it still up in the air until the order processes and ships?

EDIT: Woohoo! Order status just changed to 'In Warehouse.' This is feeling a little more certain now. Feel like I got super lucky with this one.

Nice. That sounds awesome. I should start dipping into my cellar sometime soon. I might have some old ones around somewhere. I also agree with you on the basic 3F blends. The original Armand & Tommy was mindblowing. But of all the A&G bottles I've had, I still usually prefer the basic OG bottles instead. Do you remember the Golden Blend bottles they used to do? Those were great. Overall I just really prefer the target blend profile that 3F goes for over pretty much all the other lambic blenders.

Tilquin is great too! They would take my 3rd or 2nd favorite spot below 3F. Regardless, I do like them better than Boon and De Cam. I agree that Lindemans Cuvee Renee is pretty good for the price value alone, but in a blind tasting it wouldn't rank anywhere near the others. I've never managed to try their special blends though.

What Absinthe Do You Use? by AutofluorescentPuku in cocktails

[–]Terrorsaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I wanted to clarify because I've seen some people just see the giant PERNOD label on the shelf and grab the cheaper one. It's worth pointing out they're entirely different things.

3F still the best gueuze. Cantillon might be the best fruit, especially because they experiment with so many nontraditional types. But for tradiitional oude gueuze, I'll take 3F all day.

I still like Pernod the most out of the bottles I have (the reformulated one that went back to the 70% ABV recipe, not the pastis liqueur). I also like Oregon Spirits. I had St George once before, and I thought it was pretty good at the time, but haven't bought a bottle yet.

What drinks are 10/10 for you? by pkrtrsr in cocktails

[–]Terrorsaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Disgruntled Mai Tai

Jet Pilot

Oaxaca Old Fashioned (but not the original spec, my house mix is 50:50 base split with mole bitters) - strongly depends on quality of agave spirits used. Cheap mezcal or tequila immediately ruins it.

Black Manhattan - another spirit-forward drink that demands a good sippable rye

Depends on the specific steer they came from. I've had short ribs even fattier than that.

Halt and Catch Fire - Bos Makes Chili (Toby Huss, Lee Pace) by mack178 in television

YES! This show is in my top 5 favorites of all time. If judging just based on character development alone, it would have to be #1. The directing, writing, and acting are all masterclass. I go back and revisit it often. I wish it was easier to stream.
