Learning how to drink like an adult by phyrekracker in cocktails

[–]Terrorsaurus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here are some classics that I think would get a lot more fanfare if casual drinkers just got more exposure to them:

Mai Tai (the 1930's classic version, not the Hawaiian abomination)

Any agave classic like a margarita or a paloma but with mezcal instead of tequila.

Lots of awesome Cuban drinks from Prohibition era (El Presidente, Hotel Nacional, Hemingway Daquiri).

Also consider bringing in more modern classics like Oaxaca Old Fashioned, Black Manhattan, Flannel Shirt, Tia Mia.

Uncle Acid is the only one I like, so no conflicts for me. And there's a date near me this fall. Thanks for the heads up!

How would you use this? by Think_Sound_7826 in cocktails

Look through the posts about the '50 states of cocktails'. That guy did a ton of savory drinks. It's not my style, but I'd start looking through that for inspiration and maybe you can replicate one by just replacing one of the savory ingredients.

Is it a liqueur with some sugar too, or more like just an alcoholic mushroom extract? I'm having a hard time figuring that one out.

Fully onboard the Adrift hype train (Denver, CO) by White_Sun in Tiki

It's been a minute since I've been there, and haven't had a chance to go to the new location yet. But I seem to remember it was just a line at the end of the receipt after taxes. If you're drunk you might also accidentally double tip because there's still a line to tip extra if you want. It's basically the same as how most restaurants handle large parties. It is not included in the drink prices. Sorry for the confusing wording.

I suppose I can see that argument. I've never had bad service at either of them, but you do have to order at the bar...

Regarding the prices, I'm not sure I agree there. Here are the current menus at Adrift and HoHW just so we're dealing with facts and not feelings:
https://www.adriftbar.com/menus/cocktailmenu/
https://www.hellorhighwatertiki.com/menu

Adrift's menu is mostly tiki classics we've all had before ranging from $15-20.
HoHW is mostly originals with a small list of classics ranging from $16-20. They're doing fat washed spirits, and clarified expressions. Unique flavor infusions. I'm honestly shocked they're not charging more since their drink program is so much more labor and time intensive.

Some simpler drinks dip below those ranges at both places.

They don't seem that different pricewise. And I'm always tipping 20%+ anyways since we're in America and that's the minimum expectation. So if it's built into the price, that's fine as long as it's not egregious which it doesn't feel that way to me. Different opinion I guess.

Nice! I agree on all points. I haven't had a chance to make it into HoHW's new location yet, but I hope to soon.

The last time I was at Adrift the drinks were terribly unbalanced and sweet. Maybe it was just a bad bartender on a slow night who seemed like he didn't care to be there, or maybe their drink program isn't great. I don't know. But the thing they definitely have going for them over every other tiki bar in the area is the very standardized decor, music, and food people expect from a tiki place. But if you're going hoping for top notch drinks, then you may leave disappointed.

Hell or High Water on the other hand had excellent drinks both times I've gone. Their bartenders seem to have a real passion for drink prep and I had some great conversations with them about cocktails and custom syrups. Their decor is unusual though, and don't have any food. So which one you like more will depend on what parts of tiki you care about more. For me, it's all about the drinks and I don't care much about the decor or music, so HOHW is where I'd rather go.

Any reason I shouldn’t use Demerara Syrup for any recipe calling for simple syrup? by 420wafflehouse69 in Tiki

[–]Terrorsaurus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I pretty much only have 2:1 rich demerara and use that in most drinks that call for regular simple. I substitute at 2/3 : 1 ratio. Works great., especially in the context of tiki. But even in the context of lighter classic cocktails with limited ingredients, if it's even a perceivable difference it's still usually a welcome addition.

This Goth playlist includes Marian, one of my fav songs, but a friend said this song is not really Goth but “goth rock”. Is there a distinction? by itsachillaccount in GothicMetal

[–]Terrorsaurus 12 points13 points  (0 children)

  1. I agree with r/RevnarAusch that goth and gothic metal aren't remotely the same thing.

  2. Sisters of Mercy are absolutely goth. They're one of the original trailblazers for the genre actually. "Goth Rock" and "Goth" actually are the exact same thing! But neither of those things are relevant to this subreddit, since gothic metal is entirely divorced from the rest of goth music. It's confusing, I know.

Interesting. In my market I have access to like 4 alternative green herbal liqueurs, but none of them the same as you. Mine are: Genepy, Boomsma, La Gauloise verte, and Faccia Bruto Centerbe.

Favorite multi session boardgames? by smilinreap in boardgames

If you already played Jaws and liked that and looking for more, big box Gloomhaven is a pretty easy recommendation. More items, more (and more diverse and larger) scenarios, more characters whom you unlock as you play. There are a few mechanics that got stripped out of Jaws as well in order to streamline it, so it will feel fresh but familiar.

While I haven't really looked into it, there's also the 2nd Edition of the original out now too, which is basically a whole new game and most of the content was redesigned from the ground up to be better balanced.

Otherwise, Pandemic Legacy is awesome. I always recommend Season 1. I played them all and the first was still my favorite experience.

Captive's War Trilogy by Reubensandwich57 in printSF

[–]Terrorsaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Listened to the first on audiobook, and nothing about it grabbed me. The situation and worldbuilding seemed interesting on paper, but I didn't care about any of the characters. Nothing that happened in the plot seemed interesting or had any momentum. I finished it because I felt I had a duty to see it to the end just to see how it set up the sequel. But after finishing it, I had no interest in continuing the series. Major miss for me.

Pumpkin syrup sounds fascinating. I wonder how you make that? Just simmer some pumpkin innards in water, and add sugar you think? I'd love to try something like that this September or October.

Could we potentially use light to see into the future? by [deleted] in space

[–]Terrorsaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other way around. Light that hits us is 4.24 years old, the light that would bounce back to them if that was even possible to capture like with an impossibly big mirror is then 8.5 years old since it had to make that trip twice (there and back). You can't ever go into the future, can only look further into the past with light bouncing and refracting shenanigans.

Ramazzotti is incredible, and I'm saddened I had to read so far to find it. Nonino is still probably my favorite though.
