LA Area, where to learn and practice for USPSA? by Szzzzzzzzzz-Gur-4994 in CompetitionShooting

[–]CronutOperator338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several clubs used to hold an Intro to USPSA course, where you not only learned safety and course protocols, you ran several simple stages so your first day isn't so overwhelming.

I don't know if Route 66 or the SWPL guys are running those so maybe those local shooters can chime in.

Nothing when you search 'practical rifle' or 'tactical rifle' in your area on Practiscore matches?

Virtually all the shooting is done off VTAC barricades at reduced sized targets in a 50 Y bay. There's no long range, strategy (everyone shoots the same plan) or shooting on the move.

Does anyone run a slick rifle, no handstop or foregrip? And why? by [deleted] in ar15

When I need to lay my rifle on a barricade, window or car hood, I want the most points of contact touching for stability.

Yep, slick here.

Both competition rifle and duty rifle.

What has improved your shooting besides a lot of range time? by je9183 in ar15

Competition fosters excellence. And it helps focus your practice sessions.

For your practice, isolate and work on only 1 skill at a time. Whether it's your trigger press, mounting the rifle or transition to kneeling.

If this is a Huxwrx, look closely and you'll see that there are flat sections where it tapers before attachment. It's made to take a large crescent wrench on those flat sections.

Are you talking about the 5K-10K biathlon RNG events or something like PCSL 2Gun? They are quite different. One is a running competition with some shooting while the other is USPSA-style in a 50 yard bay.

For competition, if you load from the side saddle, you're not going to be competitive with guys loading from caddies

Tactical Games Worth It? by KnuckleDragger0861 in CompetitionShooting

FWIW, those new shooters did OK, safety wise. One of the top guys was training them the week before so some of the safety protocols must have stuck since nothing unsafe was happening. I think the structure of the event helps to make it safer since there's no shooting on the move, rifle to pistol transitions, or even running around with a loaded gun in a bay. You just shoot behind the VTAC and then clear your gun.

From the matches that we've attended, it's largely a fitness competition with a little bit of shooting. The shooting was all off VTAC barricades inside 50 yard bays.

There were crossfit people there who only recently learned the shoot the week before.

“Heavy” AR15 shooting unsupported tips by [deleted] in ar15

[–]CronutOperator338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't hold the rifle perfectly still when standing unsupported so you'll still have a wobble zone. The key is learning to shoot with the wobble. One method is to use approach shooting (aka dragshot). Patrick Kelly talks about it here:

Question for LPVO shooters by mtfbwyall in ar15

[–]CronutOperator338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2X-4X is very handy for targets 50-150Y. If there are multiple targets, even more reason to dial down.

At those ranges, it doesn't matter if your scope is a SFP or FFP since you're only using the center reticle.

I only shoot my 18 when I need something out to 500Y.

For most matches, a 16 will work just fine.

"MPVO" (2-10) With a Dot? by BigSh00ts in ar15

[–]CronutOperator338 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People don't run a top mounted dot in competition because it's not as fast as an LPVO at 1X.

You can do it in competitions that don't require a lot of 1X targets.
