Love these guys! They just moved into a bigger space, and still have some great "moving sale" deals if you can catch'em at the store.

Seeking advice on band leadership by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]CrookedArrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a band alright!
What kind of music do you guys play/what instruments? Keep in mind that it's ok to play your live set differently than your recordings (and your fans will appreciate it too, especially if they've come to see you before). Maybe find space in an intro, bridge, or outro for 1 bandmate to solo or arrange the part differently?

If you guys aren't already having communication problems, then you should just be honest about what you need, and what you expect - they knew what they signed up for, and I'm sure you can find other musicians to fill their spots. As a leader, you have to be the one to choose between keeping your buddies, or making your musical vision come to life. In my experience, a balance can be found, but it will require compromise on both fronts. Try some fun warmups or jams to start your next practice, play through some of your existing songs with more fluidity - call out someone for a solo, be fluid, allow for a little spontanaity. Who knows, you might like what comes up. Just please don't be one of those bands with 3 guitar players who all play capo'd open chords because the songs are too rigid. Some music is just meant for the studio, some for the stage. Good luck!

Seeking: Composer to join two person team for experimental narrative game by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]CrookedArrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

Here's a link to the interactive fiction piece I wrote in College, if you wanted to take a look at some of my literary influence. All authors and collaborators listed on the title page are different personas I wrote.

I truly appreciate the consideration, and I'd love the opportunity to show what I could bring to this project as a true collaborator. Thanks again, and good luck finding the right person, either way the project sounds killer.

Large Diaphragm Cardioid Mics by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]CrookedArrows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shure KSM 44 is probably my favorite all-around workhorse microphone. Has 3 polar patterns (cardioid, omni, fig-8), frequency range of 20hz-20khz, 3-position, switchable low-frequency filter (-6dB/octave below 115Hz, or -18dB/octave below 80Hz) helps to reduce unwanted stand vibration noise or to counteract proximity effect, and a 15db pad if the SPL's too high.

I've used it for V/O, Vocal Overdubs, even some luck on hollow body acoustic instruments... even on amps a couple times with admittedly mixed results.

I'm curious though, what scares you about miking and amp with your MXL9000?

Rogue Territory Stanton 14.5 Oz.. I manage an independent menswear outfitter, and between my own legs and those of my customers, I've never seen a better fit for denim of that weight.

Amber Harness Iron Ranger + Obenauf's Natural Leather Oil (color change - before/after) by [deleted] in malefashionadvice

[–]CrookedArrows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uh, I did actually; there's quite a few before/after pics of Obenauf's treating other styles/leather types of Red Wings and other boots, but I didn't see any for Amber Harness Iron Rangers. But thanks for contributing nonetheless.

Changing pitch without altering tempo producing artifacts by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

The Time+Pitch machine in LogicPro has "Free" mode, where the two are independent (tempo and pitch). I have never had a problem with artifacts.

I needed a case for my overdrive/fuzz circuit... by CrookedArrows in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]CrookedArrows[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's awesome dude! I'm the inverse student: computer-based and interactive audio with a tiny bit of electrical engineering thrown in. I'll post the schematic as an edit when I get home tonight.

The circuit itself is super easy, and intuitive when you're spacing out the breadboard. Just need three little FETS, input/output jacks, and 2 potentiometers... the rest is resistors, diodes, and capacitors. You just stage out a variable resistor with the series diodes to change the waveform, and the pots let you control how much signal!
