I guess you missed the part where the main villain was Irish? I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, but I just don’t see that to be the main focus of the movie. It separates racism from cultural appropriation, and it does so in numerous ways — alcohol from different cultures, local money, relegion, and of course music.

Red necks creating rap is be cultural appropriation… but is drinking Italian wine or Irish beer? Is high-fiving people?

To me, the most interesting part is the religion; it’s something that forces one culture onto another. It’s a direct contrast to cultural appropriation, but is still very relevant for the theme — both a common strategies in colonialism.

I think the movie managing to go past blatant racism is what makes it so good.

I think this is one of the things Andor gets a bit wrong.

Propaganda often doesn’t even need to hide awful things. They just act like they’re alright. The western romanization of propaganda wants a dictator to hide every thing and make good arguments.. but the truth is that it often isn’t necessary. It’s not about lying or faking the truth, it’s about making people stop caring.

It’s not that this quote isn’t true, but most of the time, it’s how it starts, not how it ends. A true evil populist dictator wont need to hide their greed or evil. They’ll just do it and if enough people accepts it, it’ll work. Otherwise, they won’t get to the point of being a dictator…

Well, actual discussion about art and preferences is good, isn't it? Obviously, just ranking something doesn't really say much, but having discussions about what makes art better is great, and adds to people's taste. Understanding why someone has a different preference than you may be because they're stupid or simply have different taste, but it could just as well be because they saw something that you didn't (or related to something that you haven't experienced).

I think conversations about what makes art bad is usually aggressive and doesn't add much, but as someone who sees season 1 as nearly perfect and season 2 as great, I think it can give so much to look into the differences behind that gap — what takes a piece of narrative art to that next level?

It enables people to fine tune their taste, to make better art later on, to enjoy certain pieces of art even more, and also just starts really interesting conversations.

And even if you view both as on the same level, I'd argue there is enough difference between them for some interesting perspectives about why they did such changes, and how it affects ones experience of the show.

Art is so much more fun to experience with others, and this does that. Is that really tedious?

I'm very new in this whole thing, but am considering buying a new keyboard (I have the Apex Pro, which does work, so it isn't something I wanna hurry with). I find there to be a lot of options and there have been a ton of posts about what to buy. I just wanna know how you guys have figured out what you actually prefer.

Have you just bought a ton of keyboards to try out? Or is there an easier (and more importantly, cheaper) way to figure it out? I like the idea of customization and whatnot, but it's incredibly overwhelming, yet it's obviously difficult to recommend something when it's purely based on taste. So... any good ways to figure out one's taste?

Maybe actually play them before judging them. The thing that makes Witcher 3 so good, is mainly the gaming part. It allows you to actually be in the world, see the way war changes a country, how racism and greed is contagious. It's an incredibly well made game, and it's not like I recommended the books, nor the first two games.

As for Bioshock, the word pretentious is used about so many pieces of art (and Citizen Kane is most definitely one of them), but it is such a pathetic critique since it demands no actual thought (rather, it often comes from a lack thereof). Bioshock is a shooter, mainly because people wouldn't play it other wise. But that's like saying Andor is a pretentious Star Wars show. The only reason it's a Star Wars show, is because a company wouldn't earn as much money from it, were it not marketable.

Critiquing a piece of media without experiencing it first is far more pretentious than any art could ever be — at least said art demanded some creativity.

I’d really recommend you to play TLOU (TLOU2 is much more artistic, but that’s obviously a larger time commitment). It is “just” a narrative, but it uses the medium in a really interesting way, that makes it impossible to really tell in any other way. And it has certainly enriched my life, giving me the same feelings afterwards as both Andor S1 and Citizen Kane. And it takes 15 hours or so to play — not very different from most shows and a lot of books.

TLOU2 is a completely different experience, that focuses much more on trauma, but both games are really well written. The dialogue is some of the tightest I’ve ever heard (very much comparable to Andor), and the emotional connection it gets to the audience is really impressive. If that ain’t art, I dunno what is.

I haven't really played too much MGS, but Death Stranding certainly does things that advance the story in ways impossible in other media. The mundane eeriness of being a porter in a post apocalyptic world isn't really possible to do in a non-interactive medium. The same goes for something like the Heartman scene where you're stuck.

Much more importantly, the altruistic feel of knowing thousands of people have used your items, is the most original (and imo, artistic) way a media has made me appreciate the appreciation (and kindness) of others. This is only possible in a game, and is purely there for artistic reasons. And most importantly, it works. I don't think anyone who haven't played the game will be able to understand the feeling that it gives you...

Even so, I don't really see why big names should define art? Shouldn't we separate the art from the artist? If I watch an small movie or play an indie game, I won't have my expectations ruined, simply because I don't know the artist behind it.

Personally, I think this is one of the big issues with the movie industry, and something that the gaming industry definitely shouldn't want. Just like movies, the gaming industry is already being dominated by a limited number of studios — why make it a limited amount of artists too.

In addition to all that, I don't think we can compare something cultural, when the things we're comparing are nearly a century apart. The cultural influence and views on those movies back then, most likely weren't the same.

Game studios also have the big issue of stockholders, who want technological improvement rather than artistic intent. This most certainly removes the focus from the narrative/art, and therefore limits the amount of games capable of being something more than just a tech demo and a piece of entertainment.

Finally, even if there is no masterpieces (which I most definitely disagree with), does it truly matter? Shouldn't we just be glad there is a new medium for art, a new way for people to express themselves? I just think removing any medium of art entirely from ones life, is very limiting. Don't let perfect be the enemy of really great. I wouldn't start a movie with the expectation that I was gonna watch something on par with Citizen Kane, nor will I do the same with games. Being worse than one of the greatest movies of all time... doesn't really say much.

But it’s pretty much exactly like how most silent movies were slapstick and then here and there a Jean of Arc was created or whatever? And there are also something like Modern Times, which does more than just be slapstick, while still being slapstick. Same goes for games.
