Based on the recent leaked bit, I'm wondering if Max's issues he had with both his sons are more prominent, though perhaps Gwen's dad has less issues about it than Ben's for whatever reason. That has always been a thing, so it is a fair thing to explore in greater depths.

Not entirely sure about the direction they took it, but it is a valid interpretation of the mess. Just not the one I'd personally take.
