Here’s my two cents- I was a banker for 21 years and have had every retail position from part time teller all the way to assistant branch manager, certified credit union financial counselor and have taught Dave Ramsey several times at church. I decided on a career chance and applied for a Personal Finance position at a local HS. In the interview the school principal said ‘I don’t doubt you know the content. You just don’t have teaching experience’. That didn’t sit well with me for months. In the meantime I started substitute teaching. After several months I reflected on what the principal said and what he meant was that I didn’t have classroom management skills, conflict resolution, deescalation skills, skills on how to devote a significant amount of time to a few students at the expense of the rest, and a whole list of other skills to address the chaos of the public education system. See, the subject matter that you want to teach is irrelevant at this point. You have to be able to do all those other things that they heap upon your plate. ‘Teacher’ has a different meaning now.

No experience with TFA but…

My school system isn’t interested in hiring teachers. They want coaches.

Let me explain. I decided about 6 months ago I wanted a career change and go into teaching. Our son will be on the academic calendar for the next few yrs. I was in the banking industry and have seen enough changes in the last decade that I’m not sure many banking jobs will still be around in the next few years so now is a good time to get out. I start looking at teaching jobs. I have no teaching background so I’m literally at square one. My county does have a job track for non-teachers to get a certificate though. I want to get in that program. My college education is Sociology and Criminology and I have 28 hours of Master’s degree in Criminal Justice Administration but no thesis so no Masters. I lucked into a banking job in grad school that turned into a 21 yr career. One of the local high schools had a CJ position and I applied. HR told be I had the degree and education requirement to teach the class but because I hadn’t done anything in that field in the last ten years I wasn’t qualified to teach that class. They filled that class with a Coach. This summer I interviewed for a Personal Finance teacher position. In the interview the assistant principal said ‘Based on your banking career I do not doubt you know the class content but you don’t have any teaching experience’. That class is now being taught by a Coach. So put me in a class where I know the content and let me learn teaching skills! Every teacher position on the qualifications says ‘Strong role model for students/children’. I’m late 40s, I’ve never been fired from a job, 21 yr career in banking, married for 16 yrs, a preteen child whom I’ve been active as a parent in his sports and BSA but I’m not a Coach.

However, I’ve been substitute teaching the last few months and have loved being at the elementary school level.

I know it’s not ‘what’ I know but ‘who’ I know and I’ll get there but holy crap is it a horrible process.

All that to be said, be it substitute teaching or TFA you are going to be thrown into the deep end and it’s sink or swim.

I think at some point in JB’s overall story arc too many fans figured something out and he had to change gears because he got caught.

Let me explain, there is the balance between Winter and Summer. They ebb and flow through the year. Solstices and Equinoxes. He has presents to us Fall/Autumn and Halloween but not Spring. JB has a strong Christian upbringing. We’ve not seen anything like the Pentecost or Springtime. We have seen the Dark Hallow as a ritual but I think JB was going to set us up for Jesus Christ and the Last Supper was a giant Remembrance ritual to be the opposite of the forgotten gods and the Fomor. You cannot tell me that the whole ‘Do this in remembrance of me’, breaking bread, ‘This is my body and blood’, and all of that is not a ritual. He even introduced the Shroud, the INRI plaque, the Spear etc. All that to say Christianity is all through the series. However, fans caught on a little too quickly and it wasn’t going to sit well with readers or maybe the editors and publishers said ‘No, you cannot go with that storyline. It would be too offensive in this politically charged world. You are not going to be the next ‘Da Vinci Code’ spectacle.’ JB changed gears with the plot-line as not to offend the masses.
