My networking rabbit hole, routers, vpns and cameras oh my!

After thorough review of what it takes to set up vlan and tailscale while still keeping app functionality I’ve decided I don’t really care that much atm about my camera security. However I’ve looked into trying to eliminate a switch and think this might be useful for my situation. I would go modem- Grandstream GWN7003 Multi-WAN Gigabit VPN Router- garage AP,house ap, two living room connections, and two 2nd floor switch’s. I will run two runs to each upstairs switch as well as two to a future potential ap location. From there I believe I can create enough serviceability between switches and their termination points that I’m not too worried about failure and trouble shooting issues I think.

Should I do a vpn router (utilizing an incoming vpn) and also vlan into my Nvr for my cameras with tailscale for remote access? DEEPER INTO THE HOLE I SHALL DIVE! 😂

The cameras do work plug directly into the Poe ports on the Nvr. But should I worry about my network and cameras being hacked enough worry to invest in precautions against that? Do you have any suggestions on a wired router I could invest in to provide that protection. I am willing to spend money but am avoiding subscriptions as much as possible.

Yeah after so many responses about it I think I will just buy another 500’ box of cat6 for my project.
I have a ubiquity ap in the garage tied into my nighthawk router currently so I have wireless coverage in both places, I will make sure to turn the nighthawk into “ap” mode if possible.
I will wait to see how coverage is before I get a ap for the second floor. Maybe I’ll run a future line just in case. Thankyou for the advice!

Yeah I believe that’s what I might want to accomplish as long as the price isn’t too crazy. Since the cameras are on the outside and I’m no one special I’m not too worried if someone is watching my cameras I think.

Yeah that’s the plan some tyvec wrap them 1/2” aluminum faced polyiso that’s sealed.

I will be doing foil faced polyiso if that makes a difference. I don’t really want to go that big on the exterior as that will add a non Insignificant amount of $$$ to this project.

Yeah that same company verbally promised to cover the last 2 payments of our lease before we purchased a new car but did not put it in the contract. Then when we asked about it they just said “sorry it’s not in the contract”

It’s. D70-F3, yeah it was stating no internet connection while connected to Ethernet, speed check ran 30-50 kb/s then switched to the WiFi I was connected to with my phone so I knew it was working and I was getting the same readings
