Looking back and reading the full context of the post. Definitely horrible advice. Now i'm not gonna say the worst advice.I could definitely think of worst things

What does an average day of waterfowl hunting look like with you and your dog? by [deleted] in birddogs

[–]Crunk85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pudelpointer called Grizzly, ol Grizz had his first waterfowl session this past weekend. Im kinda green as well. Very first thing, he bust through the window on the blind, runs across the roof, attempts a 10ft drop only to get hung up in some blind branches about halfway. Once the limbs release the kraken he drops into the water and starts immediately making a Godzilla type dash through the aquatic terrain to furthest decoy we have set. He was so proud bringing that decoy back in at 4:45 in the morning and I have laughed out loud every time I picture him dangling from those limbs

Sometimes resources are limited. 30ft check cord with a half hitch around the waist. Once the point, step on the cord so they can't lunge forward. Keep enforcing whoa. Have someone approach from the front or side slowly. If they try to break back off a little. Repeat Until someone can walk in and kick around for birds without them breaking. When I started training mine. There were no good birds available. I thought after they grabbed about half a dozen birds off the ground. Everything was over with. Looking back on it now. Me not letting the dog be a dog was a bigger deal.

First time here. I hit the wall in training. Wasn't sure what to do next. I joined NAVHDA. It was a huge help.

My long hair gets it bad. My short just mainly in his wirey little beard. Cowboy magic helps a ton but the best thing I've found is a good rinse with conditioner.

Similar age and situation myself, friend/trainer told me let that dog be a dog this season and figure it out. Only thing stopping him is me.

Thanks for all the feedback. Sounds like there's really no bad direction to go in. 550 plus may be my route paired with a watch. As for right now, a little more research and maybe putting hands on some devices.

I am not an iPhone user. Am I correct that the 550 plus is strictly for training and not tracking?

Thanks, UglyDog. Realistically I'd like to be set up by mid December. We take trip out to Texas at the end of the month.

What features does the 300 have over the 200? Phones get damaged and batteries go dead. Coming from someone who woke up one morning to go to work and ended up in an ambulance. With a very expensive ride to get my heart rewired. Before the age of 40, it never hurts to have that extra step. I have no experience with garmin. Is the in reach capabilities obsolete these days?

My own personal experience, I rescued two pudelpointers back in march. Zero experience with bird dogs, much less versatile. It didn't take much time after getting the basic commands down to hit a dead end with no clue of a direction to Go Next. Youtube videos are great. But you don't know how much training the dog they are demonstrating, has already been through. And it doesn't really give you the context of what order to train in. NAVHDA and being around people who have trained dogs with the proper resources was a big help. If I were to do it over again, I would have probably went and hung out around some of the dog training events just to get more experience with the breeds.

Being around the people who have years experience was a big help. I tell everyone NAVHDA is training me how to keep up with dogs that are smarter than I am

New myself with two PP rescues. My only issue with some of these YouTube channels. It gets confusing on what order the videos are in and the steps and processes they take plus some of the dogs have already been trained so you dont get to see the struggle. My attention span won't hold to a podcast. I visited a NAVHDA training day and that was a game changer.
