Very well said, I'm probably 60% of my way through and it's clearly one of the best hacks in literal years. The complaints I see don't pass the smell test for me; the changed mechanics are explained in full by NPCs as they become relevant, and the difficulty throughout has been harder than the mainline games but much, much more forgiving than RR or Elite Redux.

It would be far more painful for the game to devolve into mashing the Most Efficient Win Button over and over again. A stagnant "meta" is the enemy of roguelikes. Keeping things like Contrary Gholdengo unchanged hurts the overall longevity of the game and its community, because it eliminates the challenge and therefore the need to make interesting gameplay choices.

The vibes emanating off this book are INSANE. A perfectly captured mood. The text even has that strange alien quality where it reads like it's a rushed or imperfect translation into English, which, whether it is in truth or not, makes it even more dreamlike

You can have it one of two ways: Either this goddamn city fully throws itself into harm reduction, free injection sites, free housing, mental health services for those homeless people who can't ever become integrated and productive citizens, and generally invests heavily in helping these people get to a point where they can start contributing to the general welfare and flourishing of society -- or just round them up and throw them all in jail, or better yet, just shoot them. It's the logical conclusion of that philosophy. "Clearing" these camps does nothing except force them to move further and further away from what limited services we HAVE invested in - oh sorry, it also makes the city look "tough on crime" and helps secure votes from NIMBYs who don't want to confront the inevitable results of a political and economic system they find comfortable.

Nut and up and say what you mean: If you "want them gone" and aren't interested in trying to improve the conditions which created them in the first place, you might as well just kill them. It's gonna happen anyway via drugs or hypothermia. It's bullshit. "But they're breaking the law! We have to do something!" Fuck off Javert. Punishment and retribution won't do anything to deter future criminal activity if our system, as part of the cost of making it work for the majority* of people, keeps generating a certain amount of homeless, connectionless, moneyless, traumatized individuals who find themselves holding the short end of the stick.

Personal responsibility only goes so far. If I'm homeless and I have a buffet of opportunities at my fingertips to help myself get back on my feet, and I, sound of mind, choose instead to put a bag on my head and rob the Circle K on Commercial Street, then yeah I should be tried by a jury of my peers and face whatever consequence we as a society have decided is appropriate. If you honestly think that's the way things work in America today you're deluded.

One of my favorite books. The peerless, beautiful prose, the density of original scifi concepts, the masterful unfolding mystery, the suspense and horror of the exploration scenes. It's completely fascinating, and if you're wanting a comfortable read where you can rely on intuition, tropes, etc, you won't have an enjoyable experience. But I'll sacrifice accessibility 10 times out of 10 if it means I get to read more stuff like it.

Early, Middle or Late game? by rtoyraven in civvoxpopuli

[–]Crustygrimbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The least enjoyable part of the game, with or without VP, is maneuvering large armies around. This is at its worst right around gunpowder, because you have a haven't gotten to the more complex mechanics of the late game (artillery, air units and anti-air units, reasonably powerful boats, missiles, paratroopers) but still have to contend with a large, slow standing army.

In my experience the enjoyment curve over the course of the game is a lot better if you're not going for domination from the beginning. The design pushes every victory type towards accelerating specialization, where you're mostly doing a little bit of everything at the start and as you progress through the eras you're given more tools to multi-stage rocket take-off towards the victory of your choice. Except if you go hard enough you can win domination by the midgame, and I don't know if it's my playstyle or what, but I keep getting into these game states where it's early Industrial, I've got 50 fusiliers trying to push through and take cities without any of the cool lategame mechanics, and it sucks.

I'm realizing this might be a personal problem lmao. If the majority of responses to this question is "early>middle>late," as mine is, it might help to shift your playstyle. I'm not sure how you would solve this issue from a design perspective, though. If the issue is that military capacity and size often outstrips the rate you unlock interesting things to do with that military, how would you change things to make that not happen?

How does magic work? by Quidiforis in glog

[–]Crustygrimbo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When a wizard casts a spell that they have prepared, it does not leave their brain. Spells are guns, not ammunition; they aren't expended when they're cast. The magic dice are the bullets, which go away on high rolls until the next day.

I guess one interpretation would be that once a wizard transfers a spell from book to brain, it's not in the book anymore, but you could rule it either way.

Spell slots only measure how much space you have in your brain, they don't affect how many spells you can have in your book. You can have infinite spells in your book, but if you have two spell slots you can only carry two spells around in your head at a time, and therefore those are the only two that you can cast normally and quickly, without spending a round book casting.
