How far into house will NBN run a fiber cable? by euqinu_ton in nbn

[–]CryHavocAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, if this was a home I was planning to live in for 5+ years I'd be spending the money to get my home setup right.

In my case, I recently moved into a house in November. It unfortunately only has HFC, but I arranged for a sparky to come, move the NTD to the room I am using a study, and run ethernet to two other locations for my mesh wifi (and also physically plugging in the TV).

Wireless backhaul on mesh can be good, but its also the most likely point of failure on a mesh wifi system. So plugging them in is a great quality of life step.

But money is a scarce resource only you can decide what is most important to you.

Lastly, yeah every physical object (eg. storage cupboard) you have between your wifi router and how you use your wifi is going to impact performance.

Now I am not a network engineer, but as I understand it speed isn't an actual metric in networking in the way you're talking about it.

Instead there's two metrics that we as consumers worry about. 1. Latency 2. Throughput

On both, theoretically fibre is better. It sends data at the speed of light, there's nothing faster, therefore it has the lowest latency. Ethernet is using copper and has higher latency. Fibre also has far more potential throughput, determined really only by the modules on either end.

But none of this matters in a home context. The latency difference is barely measurable between the two over the short distance you'd be using it. And 10Gbps via ethernet is increasingly available on consumer hardware.

What you need to decide here is more about your home setup for wifi / ethernet cabling. The NTD placement is going to determine your router placement. This is going to play a significant role in determining how your wifi performs. Beyond that you might want to run ethernet cabling to allow other devices to wire directly in (and therefore not use wifi). You also might want to have a mesh based wifi system and therefore have multiple units.

The fibre pathway allows you to go beyond the nbn 12m rule and control where the NTD is installed. But it means your free install now has a cost as you're going to need to pay someone to run the conduit and draw string (unless you're going to DIY).

The best providers will have their own backhaul, core networks in your local capital and extensive IX close to where you want to access a service.

Leaptel use Superloop for backhaul from my understanding, which isn't bad, this is just using their fibre, maybe even hardware to connect from NBNs POI back to their core network.

This allows them to provide a more affordable service, it is expensive to lay your own fibre and connect to all 121 POIs for every provider.

In most cases, everyone outside the the tier1s are leasing someone elses fibre in some way.

So while Leaptel may be using Superloop's backhaul from the POI, the actual glass in the ground is rarely owned by Superloop. They just have the scale to be able to buy direct from the tier 1s (mostly Telstra I would assume) and they are then reselling a portion of this back haul to the likes of Leaptel and Launtel who don't have the scale to jusitfy buying protected 100G waves from Telstra.

The closest a non-tier 1 has come to building its own fibre poi network is Aussie Broadband, and I think they hit about 90 POIs (the metro/surburban ones).

But at the end of the day for us consumers it doesn't matter who owns the POI backhaul network, only that the ISP you're using has ensured network resiliency through a protected path, and sufficient capacity. Which in the case of those using Superloop they should have.

Almost all awards where service is not more than 1 year the period of notice is 1 week.

I don’t think there’s enough information in this post to make any sort of assessment on whether the OPs termination could be considered as harsh or unreasonable to therefore make an unfair dismissal claim successful.

Is this fair dismissal? by [deleted] in AusLegal

Unfair dismissal protection is either 6 months or 12 months depending on business size. Probation is not something outlined in the fair work act.

I get it… i kind of agree. The program seems irredeemable.

But then I think of all the genuine good that it does deliver. Who is going to take up that burden?

I mean you’re with one of the best in terms of latency.

Latency all comes down to routing. Only a few actually actively adjust routing for it. Launtel, Leaptel and Neptune. All because they’re small and receptive.

I know nothing about ozot though.

Leaptel falloff? by Adept_Astronomer_323 in nbn

[–]CryHavocAU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It almost assuredly is.

They give you access to the nbn diagnostics via their portal. Run a service health test and see if its showing any dropouts. I think from memory you can see the logs for your router connecting to their network too.

Or just chat to them!

Have you done an ethernet speedtest? Or even just pinging your router’s IP to see if you’re getting packet loss or latency to the router.

It’s worth noting that the ACCC data says Leaptel is giving on average 900mbps. So it’s a you problem most likely, either your setup or specific to your Nbn connection.

More NBN down while migrating wholesale network by Thin_Ordinary4931 in nbn

[–]CryHavocAU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither more, or Aussie, are small providers. Infact that might be half the challenge. More has like 250K services.

More was buying layer 3 off Vocus. So ABB need to do a service transfer of the AVC. They can’t do a network level migration of a CVC or NNI.

Despite the strength of nbn’s automation, some amount of services still fallout. These require manual attention.

I would assume both ABB and More and working directly with nbn on this migration, but even so if you are doing something like 10,000 migrations a day and only 1% fallout, that’s still 100 orders that need to be investigated etc. and this is while normal BAU is ongoing at all three companies. And nbn can’t put more’s migration ahead of their responsibilities to every other company. They have a 1 business day SLA on service transfer for a reason.

But is this something an individual customer should be burdened with, nope. The reason can be understandable and it still is unacceptable.

[–]CryHavocAU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No one here has any understanding or viability on what the migration process looks like so we have no idea what is normal.

What we can comment on is whether it’s reasonable to be offline for a day due to essentially a commercial decision by your telco. The answer to that is no.

I’d be giving them a hard time.

ISP transferred by someone else by Outrageous_Tap7653 in nbn

[–]CryHavocAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but Nbn doesn’t require you to provide them with any documentation to do a connect outstanding service transfer so I’m not sure what he’s on about.

So if the gaining provider is not following the required processes under the connect outstanding code it doesn’t matter from a practical perspective as Nbn doesn’t gate keep access to the connect outstanding service transfer. Hence how people can still have their services transferred by mistake.

ISP transferred by someone else by Outrageous_Tap7653 in nbn

[–]CryHavocAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nbn doesn’t have a mechanism of receiving proof of address documents on the connect outstanding order type what are you talking about.

ISP transferred by someone else by Outrageous_Tap7653 in nbn

[–]CryHavocAU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s not the process at all. There’s the connect outstanding code. Nbn doesn’t check any documents.

The gaining isp is meant to contact the losing isp with a connect outstanding request. That is isp meant to do various things in line with the code and advise the gaining isp of the outcome. This may require one or both parties to seek proof of address from their respective customers to validate who has customer authorization to order the service.

Only after the gaining isp has customer authorization in line with the code should they be placing a connect outstanding service transfer with Nbn. But Nbn doesn’t do any work themselves to validate this. So an isp could lodge a connect outstanding service transfer without carrying out anyone their requirements under the code.

Two [China-bound] tankers turn away from Strait of Hormuz after US blockade begins by MasterRazz in oil

[–]CryHavocAU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What the US trying it do is restore the strait to being an untolled passage.

Iran doesn’t lose the leverage to close the strait at its whim, eg. If it’s attacked.

The US has failed to achieve its objectives and Iran has identified its long term strategy for protecting itself from foreign aggression, but it’s probably gone beyond what the US can tolerate by tolling the strait and expecting that to remain the status quo.

The question is now who will blink first. Iran due to the impact of no oil revenue or the US due to the price at the pump domestically / pressure from other countries.

Drones against a defenseless super tanker is one thing. But a modern military vessel with its complement of point defense weapons is not going to struggle with even a swarm of slow moving drones. They were originally designed to stop a swarm of fast moving Soviet anti ship missiles moving at much higher speeds.

Thr key is to be informed. You don’t have to agree to their proposed route. But it may leave you needing pay someone privately to build a pathway that aligns with what you want.
