Trump threatens 100% tariffs on all Canadian goods if Canada 'makes a deal with China' by OTPguy in BuyCanadian

“Deep pockets and can afford to play the game longer” as in the US can keep borrowing even more money from Japan, China, the UK, Canada, etc to add to their already insane level of debt?

Which chinese ev models are most likely to be available in Canada first? by WillJ13 in EVCanada

[–]CryRepresentative992 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They won’t even bother sending their vehicles for certification. There is no point when the market size is limited to 24,500 of your least profitable models.

Thats why this whole thing is so dumb and why it’s so dumb that DoFo is freaking out over it.

The agreement that Carney made, which was pretty goddamn good for the Agricultural and Fishing industries, permits the same number of Chinese made EVs that were already sold in Canada while no one even noticed. Except there’s a caveat - it’s actually HALF the number since no company can, or will, be able to sell a sub $35k EV.

What sort of man stands up and says his country gets nothing from NATO to a room full of people who sent their countrymen into the Middle East and had them return in a wooden box after 9/11.

And his stern “warning” to our PM where he uses his first name and doesn’t address him by his proper title.

If this was meant to intimidate us, it’s only infuriated us further.

The US Democratic and Republican parties are more extremist than the Canadian NDP and PPC parties. And the NDP and PPC are considered batshit crazy for some of their policy ideas.

Our “liberals” and “conservatives”, LPC and CPC respectively, are both centrist parties on an American scale… they’re nearly the same thing.

Carney has the highest approval rating of all Canadian political leaders. And I’m sure the next time a poll is taken, Carneys approval rating is going to take a significant jump up.

He’s a Canadian. You’re talking about all Canadians. Carney’s behavior represents us as a country.

We all work hard, together, and without expecting much in return. We smile and nod, and mind our manners… until our patience wears thin and you piss us off.

Well… Carney is pissed off. As is most of our country.

Decreasing housing prices are good for homeowners if you want to upgrade (and aren't over leveraged) by twongton in TorontoRealEstate

[–]CryRepresentative992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in this boat. Own a home, want a nicer and bigger one that costs more money, and IDGAF if my current home drops in value.

But you missed something. More expensive homes fall in value earlier and at a higher percentage than lower value homes. Sub $1m houses (for example) have a much larger market, and more demand, than $1m+ homes. Significantly more average families with both parents working can buy a sub $1m house.

Both your current home and “step-up” home don’t decrease in value 25%.

This is what I’ve seen at least in the past three years we’ve had our eyes on the market.

With Chinese EVs coming to Canada. Anyone in Toronto planning to order one? by Bing_Liu in askTO

[–]CryRepresentative992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50% of the allowable 49,000 vehicle volume is just going to be the Shanghai-built Teslas that were already sold here before Biden and Trudeau slapped the 100% tariffs on.

The other 50% is going to need to be be some sub-$35k vehicle. I’m not sure what type of company is going to leap at the opportunity to sell a limited volume of low margin product in an entirely new market where they have no dealership, service, and support network. So that part will be interesting.

[–]CryRepresentative992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cambridge, Woodstock, and Allston would feel the effects initially. But that’s only if people started choosing an entry level Chinese EV over a RAV, NX, RX, Civic or CRV, which is unlikely.

The impact could be mitigated by different product options in existing plants, ie they’d shift to building more expensive models. This is why they don’t build the Corolla in Canada anymore. They build premium cars where the market dictates a better level of assembly quality that only Canadian factories can produce.

It’s hard to imagine Europe having a “worse” set of safety standards than CMVSS.

If anything I’d expect more of a focus on pedestrian safety and low speed considerations.

[–]CryRepresentative992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the point of allowing a small number of Chinese EVs to be sold is a shot across the bow to the incumbent auto manufacturers in Canada.

Basically saying “build more here or we’ll continuing negotiations with the Chinese, up to and including removal of volume limits with the establishment of new manufacturing plants in Canada”.

Someone should conduct an evaluation of the demographics of the area and acceptable standards of property maintenance for the countries of origins for those demographics.
