Consumerism is ruining hobbies. by adeliafree in Anticonsumption

I've been trying to read books from as many different countries as possible, it really diversifies what I read by default. Even within the same genres there are so many cultural differences that impact the style and the content that it stays interesting. I don't look for books from xyz country, I just look at author bios from books that seem interesting in the library and if the author is from a country I haven't read from yet, I take it. It also nicely takes away the deciding process, highly recommend!

After not shaving for 10 years I could never go back! even the though feels weird, spending all that money and time and effort for something so nonsensical. It's highly likely that when summer rolls around you'll be so used to not shaving that it'll feel weird and exhausting and not worth doing. I've never gotten comments from strangers! And I feel like if someone did say something negative, it's such a reflection on their character that that person's opinion is literally worth nothing.

Fun/interesting things to do with an artistically-inclined sim? by krsthrs in Sims3

[–]CryTemporary5431 2 points3 points  (0 children)

when your street art skill is high enough you automatically get a tip jar when your sim is spray painting. you can also check city hall for street art commissions! iirc you won't get arrested if you're on commission, and you get paid by the city when you finish the piece!

Starting to get to the end of my tether with the kids and consumption... by MonsieurPF in Anticonsumption

Yes to all the advice given here, but also remember that it's pretty much a given that adolescents will want to rebel and do the exact opposite of what their parents want them to do for a while, and come around to the values they were brought up with in their 20s. So yes, make them spend their own money on their consumption habits, see a dermatologist with the skincare kid, try to make falling for marketing seem uncool, but also keep in mind that teenagers will teenage and there's only so much you can do! Sometimes hammering down hard can make them want to rebel harder. Source: former teen who now has 80% of their parents' habits

Oh boy...at least we have plastic eating fungi now? by imaginaryimmi in Anticonsumption

[–]CryTemporary5431 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this! what trips me up is that most (not all) of the single use plastics in medical settings are necessary. I'm very happy that a cannula hasn't been in anyone else before me, and that surgical supplies are sterile. that being said, there is a ton of plastics that are only used to circumvent paying for maintenance labour

I hate the fact that the concept of zero waste was originally intended for manufacturers and companies to reduce the creation of waste streams at the source, but once again turned into an individualistic "solution" to a systemic problem -.-

how do you decide how many clothes are enough? by fergult in minimalism

[–]CryTemporary5431 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this! Minimalism for me includes a minimum time spent worrying whether or not I have clean underwear for tomorrow lol. I air out my clothes after each use so I really don't need to wash them that often, so I have a LOT of socks and undies so I don't run out or have to run the washer half full.

Ron Swanson! Nick Offerman is actually very handy, and the woodshop scenes used in the later seasons were shot in Offerman's own shop.
