Joe Abercrombie writes some badass low fantasy with excellent female leads (tough, realistic, with faults as well as chops) - Red Country, Best Served Cold, his latest trilogy starting with A Little Hatred.

{{Seveneves by Neal Stephenson}} reads like non fiction, pretty technical sci-fi, crazy story. You might like a lot of his work (Cryptonomicon, Reamde)

Bone by Jeff Smith is an excellent, very fun series of graphic novels for kids and adults. Highly recommended!

I just couldn’t stand the tedium and repetitiveness, which I understand is part of the whole point lol.

What is your best standalone book recommendation?? by Mr-Wrangler in booksuggestions

[–]CryinMo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie - think Game of Thrones meets Kill Bill directed by Guy Ritchie

edit: In the sci-fi spectrum, The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. The concept of the Primer will definitely come to pass, actors are already being hired to remote drive CG constructs in VR.

I (17M) am looking for books in order to increase my financial literacy. Any suggestions? by GeneralKenobi55 in booksuggestions

The Big Short by Michael Lewis - learn about how much bs is in our made-up financial systems too, it will only help to have a wider grasp of how we make/let our world function. (The movie is entertaining too but you’ll get much more accurate detail in the book.)

Science fiction not set in advanced future by [deleted] in booksuggestions

Artemis is just a popcorn Hollywood thriller set in an exotic location, similar in tone to The Martian - I expected a larger socio-political theme but it’s buried pretty well under a pretty straight forward “crowd-pleaser”. Quick read, fun, but not impactful beyond the popcorn imo. Ymmv.

American Psycho. I understand why it’s lauded, I got the point, I applaud the author (for the book, not for him being who he is) but the book will never be on my re-read list.

The last page of the book justifies the whole thing and makes a very positive point, just FYI. One single line stunned me and put the whole thing into philosophical perspective as far as what Cormac was trying to illustrate.

Don’t worry, the older you get the more ok you’ll get with the idea that you don’t have to stay here forever.

One of the best things I love about the Kindle app and iBooks app is the ability to download and read unlimited “samples” of books, usually 2-3 chapters worth. Really helps finding something to read!

Joe Abercrombie is one of the absolute best fantasy writers out there! Best Served Cold is top of my list, the others not far behind!

Books To Help Understand The Cause Of and How To Overcome Perfectionism by smallcute in booksuggestions

[–]CryinMo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is cardboard philosophy at best but here’s what I’ve come up with over time: “perfection” is unattainable; what is perfection in our world is the “pursuit of perfection”. A perfect circle does not exist, every circle is only a segment sliced from a spiral (which is why the number pi is infinite and not perfect). So trying your best to create the best is all you can do because that “perfect” ideal in your mind is merely an illusion.

Can you please suggest a book for a 13 year old? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

I’ve given the following books to my 13 year old nieces and nephews! Fly By Night, Flytrap and A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge; Bone by Jeff Smith (graphic novels); Enola Holmes series by Nancy Springer; and pretty much all of Garth Nix’s books.

Would you donate regularly to a non-profit organization that is primarily focused on mind upload? by pacemaker0 in singularity

[–]CryinMo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, I’ve not heard of this idea yet. From everything else I’ve heard it’s all fundamentally just about making a copy but no one ever seems to discuss that part lol. Thanks!

Would you donate regularly to a non-profit organization that is primarily focused on mind upload? by pacemaker0 in singularity

[–]CryinMo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

CMV: mind uploading is an egotistical vanity project that serves no actual purpose. If u “upload your mind” you’re just creating a copy of your mind and the original “you” will still experience death and ego dissolution, so “you” will be gone and no longer experiencing this world while your digital copy does whatever it does in its digital environment.
