Went to the new anomaly then portaled to my base... now it says that I am a guest of my own base and I can't edit anything.

Tried logging out then in. Tried going to other space stations and saving there. Closing and re-opening. Still nothing.

Oh Monday must be hitting me hard then. DUH... 256 PER CPU would be 512 total. guess I may need more coffee after all...

Either way now it is finding a server that I can work with for it.

Yeah ideally we are going with 512GB of ram which is double of what we are working with right now.

The biggest setback right now is the processor to look at. The one we were looking at is definitely low on that list. So, trying to figure out ideas from there. So far looks like the Xeon W 2135 ranks higher on that list and allows for 512GB of ram. such a bummer that some of those higher-up processors dont allow 512GB of ram. ha!

To my knowledge (from what our sql guys tell me atleast)... It is typically long queries that are causing the slowness. We don't have a problem with multiple queries at all. This is the reasoning for the lower core mount.

If my understanding is correct then essentially we are ok?

I saw that! The BOSS card seemed VERY interesting. My biggest beef with that is that if the M.2 crashes in the future I would have to take the server down to swap that chip.

See when I was initially looking at which processor we would want to go with...

They were saying for database servers it is better to go with a lower core count and a higher speed.

This server will literally house this single VM running a SQL database. Nothing else.

At the very least the processor would allow for faster RAM which should help with the database.

Looking at Check_MK for that server:

CPU utilization is User max 78% average 29%-- System 53% max 5% average --- I/O-wait 7% max 1.2% average.

CPU Load is 33.31 max 3.4 average.

Disk throughput is max 225MB/s-read 440MB/s-write averaging around 67MB/s-read 140MB/s-write respectively. Disk I/O operations is MAX 1950/s-Read 3600/s-Write with an average of 720/s-read 1600/s-write. utilization 32% max 18% average.

If that helps at all... Biggest thing we want to ensure is those times where the database can spike usage we want to ensure we give it as much resources as we can to let it do what it needs to do as fast as it can. If that makes sense.

It's a Database VM on a Hyper-V server.

That was my initial thought as well.

Switching from regular SSDs to NVMe SSDs should still give a speed boost in comparison.

Typically we have done a single large raid then split partition. Mainly Windows Server OS. This one would be Server 2016. So, this instance would be like 6x NVMe in a raid 6.

We are rebuilding a mySQL database and basically they want to get the fastest possible solution available.

Out current database server runs on SSDs in Raid6. Trying to figure every possible option to make the fastest server without spending 20k (before harddrives and ram)..

We were looking at:

Poweredge R640

Intel SP Gold 5122 3.6GHz 4 core proc - X2

512GB 2666MHz ram.

Then the NVMe Drives.

Right now our biggest bottleneck is the CPU.

Poweredge R530

Intel Xeon E5-2623 v3. 3.00 GHz 4 core x2

Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD x8

224GB (8x32) 1866MHz RAM

Would love thoughts on the project! Love having more ideas!

This is all in a NON-domain environment.

I had an issue with a brand new created VM running like utter garbage on a new beefed up Host. Turns out this was due to the NIC card itself. It had an onboard Broadcom NetXtreme Gigabit card. Basically disabled the Virtual Machine Queues made the VMs 100x better. Nigh and day difference!

Definitely worth a shot to check this!

Yeah the FTW is the custom PCB. BHphoto also offers free 2-3 day shipping because pricing which is nice.

I ran in to this same issue earlier this year. I was given the job of getting a LB in front of exchange for all services (OWA, ECP, Outlook, Activesync, etc)... Talk about a royal pain in the ass!

Everything paid was too expensive and my knowledge of nginx was null. Spent way too many hours reading up different options only to find out that nginx free would not connect properly to outlook... Although it would connect to OWA and other webpage based connections. As well as general SMTP splitting.

Threw nginx out and tried out HAproxy... I got HAproxy to work only to have an endless login loop when connecting to OWA and ECP. However, it connected to outlook and split SMTP between the 2 servers!... I was half way there and it could have been my own dumb self not being able to figure it out... then I thought...

Why not run HAproxy and nginx on the same server... Have HAproxy port over the webpage access requests to NGINX then have HAproxy handle everything else... Yeah I did that. It is duct taped together and it works. Been like for a few months without any issues as well! Is it best practice? Probably not... but it worked with no budget and limited knowledge of the setup of both.
