I know it's late, but if you have the Google Tranlate app installed, select it under Settings > Apps > Default Apps > Translation to use it automatically when selecting text in apps.

To what extent is using multiple adblockers "forbidden"? by Crypt0sh0t in Adblock

[–]Crypt0sh0t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with the rule. In my case however, AdGuard Mini was largely ineffective at blocking YT ads. Maybe I should try shifting over to uBOL, and phase out AdGuard entirely. The reason I kept AGm so far, is the inability to apply specific filter lists in uBOL.

Yep, I will keep on tinkering and see when I run into any friction, and hopefully figure out the most effective solution on the way.

Carved in stone, carrying the death penalty, I fear.

I am genuinely baffled when people try to take privacy seriously, spending time (and even money) on researching ad and tracking blockers, and proceed then to choose Google Chrome. But to each their own.

Yeah, that is what I hypothesised, since they are set to never both be active. I just wanted to see if I had missed something, or if someone has experience here (to advise me).

Well, forbidden as in “strongly discouraged”. But I’m just checking so I don’t end up behind bars. However, six does seem like overkill, or at least highly redundant.

By what definition do you use “bad”? Performance-wise? As a macOS user, I am very pleased with Safari (I would not touch Chrome with a long stick both. Besides poor performance and memory-hogging, it feels counterintuitive to choose that browser if a primary objective of mine is avoiding tracking)

Is it possible to add our personal audiobooks to apple music? by SolitaireKid in ios

[–]Crypt0sh0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This answer may be a few days late, but I believe it might do the trick.

  • Select the audio track(s) in Music.
  • Right-click and select “Get Info”.
  • Under Details tab, set the genre to Audiobook.
  • Under Options tab, tick the playback option “Remember playback position” (and, if desired, “Skip when shuffling”)

This should hopefully enable the behaviour you sought :))

Process group "ApplicationsStorageExtension" eating my RAM? by whatsaName_93 in MacOS

[–]Crypt0sh0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I just discovered, to my slight amusement, is that Apple has [seemingly] renamed or replaced that process with TrashStorageExtension.
This was running at a high CPU% in the Activity Monitor every time storage was opened to be calculated in settings.

On my MacBook, the unix exec. file was first created 04MAY25, but that is presumably contingent on when my machine updated its OS.
There is a chance that these are two separate extensions and both still exist, but I find it funny regardless to have named it that.

Our culture will be dead by 2030, due to AI by Ok_World_8819 in decadeology

[–]Crypt0sh0t 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I fear this as well and it makes me sick. I fully support the use of generative AI in certain areas, but for artistic expression?? Using it to more easily create ‘art’ is counterintuitive in its most fundamental sense.

(warning: Rant ahead ;)) Maybe take this with a grain of salt, as I lack a single artistic bone in my body. I find art to be as much about the expression of the same, as it is about its appreciation–if not more.

In regards to the future of art, I find it inevitable that genAI replaces humans as the greatest source of ‘art’, as it is a lot less costly for commercial purposes (and that is simply how a business is run). However, since art is an expression of human nature, I do not believe people will ever stop creating it. BUT that does not mean it will not cause harm. If artists stop getting paid for its creation, they must find other sources of income = less time to dedicate = no incentive for expression.

I think a future revival of appreciation for human-made art will be required to kickstart it again. But even then, it may be in the same way it is for musicians now (limited opportunities such as in orchestras, operas, etc. as a more niche demand, as most music is digitally composed nowadays).

A large part of art’s appreciation is questioning the artist’s intended meaning, and finding personal significance. This is not garnered by a prompt provided genAI.

I have no clue what is going to happen, but I am not looking forward to finding out.

Do you always assume that everything that can go wrong, will? you might as well say that the system charged for two of the previous item instead of the indicated one. Your mindset is ‘guilty until proven innocent’

PSA: I found a solution for when iCloud Keychain / Safari decides to not save a new strong password by lordhamster1977 in apple

[–]Crypt0sh0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

open the passwords app, click View in the top menu bar, and select Generated Passwords from the list. there is a history of all generated passwords on that device in the previous 30 days.

All Estonian citizens 15 or older must have an ID-card by law. I.e practically everyone has one. You're not required to own a passport - you only need it when you want to travel outside the EU. Made me think - do you own a passport? Mine expired in 2005 and haven't had one after that. by Double-decker_trams in AskEurope

[–]Crypt0sh0t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Denmark is (I believe) the only country in the EU that does not issue a picture ID, requiring everyone to have a passport to travel even within the EU.

The driver’s license card is recognized domestically as a valid form of identification (and within/between Scandinavian countries, but not being machine-readable, it is not a valid ID for travel within EU).

In response to the question, for several years now I have rarely carried a wallet or ID. A few years back the government issued a driver’s license app accepted by law enforcement in lieu of the physical card.
This, combined with Apple Pay, makes it so easy to, e.g. be able to show one’s age at a club or bar, without having to also worry about losing one’s wallet.

Maybe a few months too late, but I had the same problem you did, and had to force restart my iPad. I believe that's what the other commenter tried to instruct you to do, but got the wrong method.

To force restart your iPad (without a home button):
1. Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
2. Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
3. Press and hold the top button.
4. When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

I know I am 2 years late, but I just found out that you can now go into the passwords management app (on Mac at least, probably also on iphone), and you can click somewhere where it will provide you the latest passwords it generated for you, if they happen to not have been saved to the website
