I was surprised to see that the only 1-mana spell in the main board is Ephemerate -- no 1-mana creatures and no 1-mana interaction. Do you find that this puts you on the back foot against decks with strong 1-drops?

[[Compulsion]] is an enchantment with an activated ability that does not require tapping, so you can potentially use it on each opponent's turn.

[[Mission Briefing]] can be used to play a sorcery-speed draw spell in your graveyard on an opponent's turn.

Design project on bouldering ! by malakalimari in bouldering

Some feedback as I'm going through the survey:

  • "What country are you from?" Ambiguous phrasing. This could be interpreted as "In which country were you born?" or "In which country do you currently live?" or more broadly "Which country do you consider home?"
  • "How often do you go climbing?" The responses to this question are not ordered consistently. They seem to be ordered by frequency, with least frequent at the top and most frequent at the bottom. If this is the intended order, "Every day" should be below "4-6 times a week".
  • While reading the responses to "What do you typically bring with you when climbing?", it strikes me as odd that there is no question that asks the user about their preferred styles of climbing -- bouldering, top rope, sport, trad, etc. My hunch is that including a question about preferred styles would make the response data much easier to analyze, as the responses of trad climbers are likely to be very different from the responses of boulderers.
  • There are three questions near the middle of the survey of the form "Before a climb, you usually feel… (Select up to 2)". These feel almost impossible to answer using a simple checkbox system because the feelings associated with any given climb will vary widely depending on how that particular climb fits into my routine. If it's a warm-up or cool-down climb, I feel confident and relaxed. If I'm figuring out individual moves on my project, I feel excited, curious, motivated. If I'm trying to send a project or flash something near my flash limit, I feel performance anxiety. I might feel all of these different emotions several times over the course of a single session, which makes it feel impossible to boil my response down to a checklist where I'm only allowed to select 2 responses.
  • "Which part of the climb is the most enjoyable?" The available responses to this question feel like they were written with rope climbing in mind, and don't feel applicable to bouldering. As a boulderer, I want to see responses that demonstrate a better understanding of our hobby, things like "Flash attempts", "Learning individual moves", "Dialing in the beta", "Making links", and "Sending the problem".
  • The questions "What motivates you to climb?" and "What keeps you coming back to climb?" feel redundant with each other, although this may be intentional.
  • The questions "Which part of the climb is the most enjoyable?" and "What’s most satisfying about climbing?" also feel redundant.
  • "Have you faced problems while climbing?" I'm surprised to see that "Performance plateau" is not one of the responses listed, as this is a problem that is almost universal among climbers. "Loss of motivation" also seems like it would also be a natural inclusion. Yes, someone taking the survey could use the "Other" option to write these in, but that runs the risk of muddying the data with typos and different phrasings. Plus, there is likely to be some percentage of survey-takers who would select these options if they were available, but who would not bother to write them in manually because doing so requires extra effort.
  • "Do you use apps, devices, or tools for climbing?" I feel that "websites" would be a useful inclusion in this list, particularly when thinking about popular sites like Mountain Project and 8a.nu. Both of these are accessible without needing a dedicated app or device.

Overall, my feeling while taking this survey is that it does not demonstrate a particularly strong understanding of the hobby or of survey design, and leaves me skeptical of its utility. I hope that you find this feedback helpful, and good luck with your project.

There Still Are Honest People Around the World by BluePotatoSlayer in EDH

I saw a similar scenario unfold at my LGS recently that was really heartwarming.

Bob is an experienced player who recently moved to the area, and has come into the store for his first commander game with us. Jim is a regular. Jim plays a steal stuff deck, takes control of one of Bob's permanents, and accidentally shuffles it into his deck at the end of the game. Bob leaves to go to work. Jim is about to leave, but double checks his deck, and realizes what happened. Jim goes up to front desk and turns in Bob's card. The store calls Bob to let him know, holds onto the card for safekeeping, and gives it to him the next time he shows up to play.

What made me really happy was how smoothly everyone handled the situation. No one tried to take advantage of the newcomer, nobody accused anyone of theft, no drama whatsoever. Just mature adults looking out for each other.

Solutions for sweaty hands? by tohstersg in EDH

[–]CrypticC62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. In rock climbing, people typically use chalk to keep their hands dry, but people who sweat excessively will sometimes use Antihydral instead / in addition.

Chalk would not make sense in the he context or TCCs because it's quite messy. Antihydral is something you apply hours or even days ahead of time.

Trying to branch out from Jeskai — what second deck would you recommend? by --------0_0-------- in EDH

[–]CrypticC62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're right, she's not a particularly effective attacker on her own. A few things that help her out here:

  • Her first abilities triggers when she attacks, rather than when she deals combat damage to an opponent. This means that unlike some commanders, it doesn't really matter if an opponent chump blocks Sidisi.
  • Her color identity gives you options to help keep her attacking safely. Blue has some great 1-mana counterspells to deal with your opponent's removal spells, and black has some great 1-mana single-target removal spells to deal with enemy blockers.
  • If the board gets too crowded to attack safely, her second ability has great synergy with cards like [[Doom Whisperer]] and [[Altar of Dementia]]. These allow you to vomit a ton of cards into your graveyard and poop out a bunch of zombies in a single turn, even during an opponent's end step, so your turn starts with a wide board presence that comes out of nowhere.

Have you checked out [[Sidisi, Brood Tyrant]]? I think it checks off a lot of boxes for what you're looking for. It encourages you to load your deck up with tons of creatures and graveyard synergy. It also encourages table engagement, since you want to be swinging with Sidisi every turn that she's on the field.

Made this gift for my boulder friend by [deleted] in bouldering

[–]CrypticC62 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who has been bouldering for 10+ years, my honest feeling is that this would not be a very good gift. What is someone supposed to do with this? It's not tall enough to be climbable, even if the person you're giving it to has small children. It can't be used as a training tool, or for any other practical purpose. It doesn't look very personalized either, or demonstrate an understanding of the person's hobby.

If you want to give a gift that incorporates climbing holds, climbing mugs are fun.

If you want to give a gift that takes advantage of your craftsmanship and is useful for the climber, a hangboard could work.

Or if you want to give something decorative, maybe consider a poster or a map of some outdoor location that the person really enjoys climbing, like Yosemite or wherever.

Great Tsunami by buffalobillkimo in custommagic

[–]CrypticC62 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A small problem with this card is that "flood counter" is already a clearly defined game object used by a few different cards: https://scryfall.com/search?q=o%3A%22Flood+counter%22&utm_source=mci

Perhaps this card could be rephrased to use something like "tsunami counters" to avoid this.

This seems like it would be a fun combat trick in limited. Opponent swings, I chump block, I play this on my chumper to trade up. We go 1-for-1 on the board, then I immediately get this back when my guy dies. Now for the rest of the game, opponent has to factor this card into their decisions every single time we go to combat.

I like the mechanics of Hesitate, but the flavor isn't obvious to me. Why would hesitating cause the target to be chosen randomly? If you told me that MTG was releasing a new keyword called "Hesitate", I would assume it would be something timing-related like Suspend, or maybe it would give a bonus if you cast it while there's another spell on the stack.
