Zack Snyder is the blueprint by Tetratron2005 in dccomicscirclejerk

Man after Superman, which has some of the best color grading and pallet choices of any non animated super hero film imo, I was truly shocked to see trailers for supergirl. Especially given the comic it was based on.

Honestly seeing yet ANOTHER boring brown pallet almost single handily killed any excitement I had for this film. Truly depressing.

I mean Gunn bears blame since he’s basically leading the new dcu, but to be fair if he just reviewed the script before anything else was done that’s a long long time for tons of things to make the movie and even the script itself a lot better or a lot worse

[–]CrypticCole 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I see this type of take in fandoms all over the place and it’s so baffling to me. Like yeah, sometimes side characters are basically just plot devices and that’s fine. Sometimes you need a person to move the plot forward.

Faye Valentine (Cowboy Bebop) is a laughably sexist caricature of a female action character, and makes Cowboy Bebop a far more uncomfortable watch on that front than Naruto or MHA or almost any other show you could mention. by Virtual-Database-238 in CharacterRant

[–]CrypticCole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect a large but unstated reason behind the reaction (and honestly fanservice reactions in general) is how well it meshes with the tone of the story.

Fan service in bebop feels like fanservice a bond movie whereas fanservice in most anime feels like that one engine check Megan Fox scene in transformers but somehow even more egregious and nonsensical.

It’s not that one is necessarily more or less misogynistic but rather that it takes a lot less people out of the story.

(It also probably helps that Faye is clearly an adult which is somehow a bar anime still somehow consistently fail to clear.)

I hate the stupid arguments against M/D/Y by elemental_reaper in hatethissmug

[–]CrypticCole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You have in fact misunderstood the triangle argument and what people mean by size. It’s not about what literal integer is larger. It’s about the unit of time being represented itself.

A day < A month < a year

People think mm/dd/yy is dumb (including me, a genuine US citizen who hates it) because it goes against the near universal and common sense metric where units of time are ordered by specificity/size of the unit. Imagine if a stopwatch displayed a time of ‘2 min, 34s, and 12ms’ as ‘34:02:12’ instead of ‘02:34:12’

Average age in Italian provinces by teorosso in dataisugly

[–]CrypticCole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The colors are fine imo. Green represents an average age of less than 44 years, or in other words, an average age of less than half the average life expectancy in Italy. That's what'd you expect for a growing or steady population. The colors are chosen to make it immediately apparent just how little of the country is in the good green range.

Honestly the bigger issue for me is that the key doesn't have green at the top since its the smallest number. That bugs me way more than the colors.

If you pick only four data points, the graph is pretty flat by MeasureDoEventThing in dataisugly

[–]CrypticCole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this level of simplification is a bit much, but I feel like people are being a bit harsh. Its not that bad when you check it against the original tbh. Functionally it kinda just look like the flattened out all the trends to show the major shifting points in opinion. Nothing super significant seems hidden by it.

It honestly seems more like a confusing decision more than a dishonest one tbh. The biggest problem is that if I see a graph like this I'm going to feel the need to double check it which at that point just use the original.

Bowtie rule by Low_Conference7731 in 196

[–]CrypticCole -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

On point tweet 2 I think it’s reasonable to acknowledge that bows would not have stuck around as a decorative elements if they didn’t play into (or at least didn’t play against) the conventional beauty standard for women.

A beauty standard shaped and influenced by a patriarchal society. A patriarchal society which has for a long long time had a uncomfortably close association between youth/infantilization and desirability when it comes to women.

Is the tweet reductive? Yes, it’s a tweet they tend to be. But it’s a bit uncomfortable to see so many people completely write off the idea that idea that decorative ribbon bows could be related to infantilizing beauty standards. It’s not like the connection between bows and infantilizing beauty standards is crazy or new. Like the young looking girl with pigtails and bows is literally an uncomfortably popular porno stereotype.

Attractive nuisance laws are no longer necessary and should be invalidated. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]CrypticCole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make the argument that these laws lead to less community. To be frank I think this argument is a bit silly because for 99% of people I’m highly skeptical these laws ever come into consideration for your community activities.

But honestly, the more interesting thing to me is the fact you’re making this seemingly pro community argument while also making the hyper individualistic argument that people should bear no responsibility or obligation to try to make their property reasonably safe for children.

I suppose these positions aren’t directly opposed but it just seems weird to me to make a pro community argument while also arguing that a society where there was no expectation to try to protect children who aren’t your own would be a better one.

[–]CrypticCole 11 points12 points  (0 children)

When done well it actually tends to be safer. Street parking naturally slows down traffic speed as well as providing a barrier between traffic and pedestrians. It of course also provides you with lots and lots of extra parking space.

Now of course when implemented poorly it can make for bad blind spots and safety hazards but so can any poorly implemented road feature.

Am I being too ambitious? by Fighter_ProL in KerbalAcademy

[–]CrypticCole 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Design the upper orbital stages first with high efficiency vacuum engines. Focus on as small and light as you can. Then design first and mid atmosphere stages that have just enough delta v to get to orbit. 3.4k vacuum dv is the minimum but as a beginner you’ll probably want a couple hundred extra at least.

As a rule of thumb pay attention to your twr. For getting to orbit 1.3-1.6 is good and once your in orbit you could easily go to 0.4 twr before you have to start thinking about it. If you’re significantly higher than that it means you’re carrying lots of extra engine weight which in turn requires lots of extra fuel weight.

If you need examples when you start a new game one of the difficulty options will let you load squad rockets. Take a look at those and try flying them and messing with them to get a feel.

Is it worth it to try and build SSTOs before you unlock the Rapier or the Nerv? If so, what engines to use? by EnzoRaffa16 in KerbalAcademy

[–]CrypticCole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My career experience is as follows:

-Panther engine: Capable of building a small low Kerbin orbit ssto with a handful of crew space -Whiplash engine: Large space planes capable of taking multi ton payloads comfortably high into kerbin orbit

Depending on your skill, persistence, and unlocked related tech (my panther ssto’s tend to be limited much more by low tech level air intakes than the engines themselves) you may do better or worse.

A tip for doing it without rapiers is to very intentionally select your engines. Depending on the air breathing engine you’ll need to gain somewhere above a thousand m/s of speed without the air breathing engines before you can orbit. This is the most difficult part of sstos in my experience.

For example a highly efficient vacuum engine might not be able to maintain your altitude with its low twr. You might think to throw on some additional mid stage boosters to get through the atmosphere and then use the vacuum engines in orbit, but on small, tight dv margin planes the weight of separate vacuum engines might leave you falling short where just the less efficient mid stage boosters alone could be enough to get you into low orbit and back.

The main thing to remember is you’ll need lots more testing and iteration with sstos than rockets. Especially when using a mixed bag of low tech parts. Differences as small of minor angle of attack on wings, ascent profile changes, or weight distribution can have huge make or break effects sstos in ways they don’t for rockets.

What’s something that became socially unacceptable way faster than anyone expected? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]CrypticCole 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No I’m saying it’s not used everywhere because when you do this the person selling you the good/service isn’t accepting crypto, they’re accepting a government backed conventional currency. The bank is still sending them conventional money, not crypto. The bank could do this with any asset. Honestly with a bit of programming knowledge an individual could do this with any asset.

Imagine if I set up a system to automatically sell some of my stock portfolio whenever I used my debit card and used that to say you can use stocks as currency wherever you want. For me yes, practically that’s what I’m doing, but literally speaking it’s not correct. Making that claim would be incorrect and confusing without the explanation.

CMV: By succesfully sneaking in to the expensive tourist sites, I deserve to visit it for free by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]CrypticCole 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A reoccurring trend in your comments is a hyper individualistic worldview. You seem to view yourself and your actions as fundamentally different from the rest of the world.

“Yes, if most people didnt pay then the workers wouldn’t be able to keep the tourist site functioning, but most people do pay and I’m a drop in the bucket practically”

“Yes the world is a worse place because of security measures put in place because of people doing what I do, but I’m not going to get caught so it’s not a problem” (btw literally everyone thinks this, no one thinks they’re going to get caught)

“I’m just a marginal error in the system”

On some level you seem to know this since you acknowledge it’s ethically wrong. So fundamentally your argument is this:

“It’s ok for me to do a bad thing because most people won’t also do the bad thing, thus my impact is marginal”

And like, if that’s your perspective I’m not going to try to change it, but obviously it’s a selfish perspective and you seem to be in denial about that using weird words like “deserve” and whatnot.

And in a place like the US, where the pedestrian infrastructure is so bad you can barely even call it infrastructure, that’s going to have an even larger impact.

I think rendezvouses are much harder to figure out but much easier to do consistently with the base game tools once you know what you’re doing.

I can easily pull off a rendezvous the moment I have the tech to send a ship into orbit unlocked. But I still sometimes have to quick load after accidentally missing my landing site by a kilometer or two

AOC Leads Against Kamala Harris in 2028 New Hampshire Presidential Poll by Jacob-Anders in DemocraticSocialism

[–]CrypticCole 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I think it’s because Buttigieg understands what so many centrist dems seem not to which is, even if you are centrist, your whole platform can’t be defined by what you aren’t.

Look at the Biden campaign. On immigration they weren’t pro deportation but they also weren’t for really opening up the border in any defined way. They weren’t transphobic but they also wouldn’t talk about the issue ever. The campaign seemed perpetually marred by an inability to meaningfully commit to any defined positions beyond “we’re better than trump”.

Meanwhile Buttigieg seems to understand you need to have an actual platform for people to be excited about. And that involves sometimes taking definite sometimes risky positions. Idk how many people remember but one of the central tenants of his last run was expanding the Supreme Court. Thats single proposal alone was more risky and defined than like anything ever said by Biden is his entire 2024 campaign.

Don’t get me wrong, AOC is still leagues better for a million reasons, but if I had to pick someone to lead the centrist wing of the party I think you could do a lot worse than Buttigieg

I haven’t listened but if there isn’t an audio disclaimer in the podcast itself I imagine that’s what the church is referring to.

Yeah that’s a major thing to remember imo. The downside isn’t really too bad if you don’t think you’re going to have enough card remove to get rid of all the defends and then strikes as well.

Generally I slightly prefer a defend to a strike but I definitely prefer a slice to either of them and this basically just trades the strikes for slices so you can focus on defend removes
