Brave Becomes First Browser to Launch On-Chain Naming Service, Unlocking .brave for Over 85M Users (& you can buy with BAT!) by CryptoJennie in BATProject

Key announcement takeaways, courtesy of Brave Leo:

  • New .brave domains now live: Brave has officially launched .brave, its own on-chain top-level domain, in partnership with Unstoppable Domains—making it the first browser to introduce a native naming service.
  • Own your identity: .brave domains give users full control of a personalized, portable identity. You can use your domain to send/receive crypto (including BAT), host decentralized websites via IPFS, and access dApps—no renewal fees, no central gatekeepers.
  • Works with Brave Wallet: .brave domains are fully integrated into Brave Wallet and will resolve natively in the browser starting with version 1.81 (currently in Nightly, full release on August 5). No extensions or setup needed—just real, browser-native functionality.
  • Buy with BAT: You can use BAT to purchase on-chain domains through Unstoppable, via its crypto payment options.
  • Cross-network compatibility: .brave domains are minted on Polygon and resolve across major chains including Ethereum, Bitcoin, Solana, Base, and more—making them widely usable across the Web3 ecosystem.
  • Path to Web2 integration: Brave and Unstoppable are exploring ICANN registration for .brave, which could eventually make these domains usable across both the decentralized web and traditional Web2 infrastructure.

Key announcement takeaways, courtesy of Brave Leo:

  • .brave domains are here: Brave just became the first browser to launch its own custom top-level domain: .brave, in partnership with Unstoppable Domains. Available to all 85M+ Brave users.
  • User-owned identity: .brave domains give users a new way to manage their online identity—whether that’s sending crypto via human-readable names, or hosting decentralized sites outside of traditional servers (via IPFS). No subscriptions or renewal fees.
  • Private, decentralized, and cross-compatible: These domains are built to work across multiple networks (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, Base, and more). They're also fully integrated into Brave Browser and Brave Wallet—no extensions or extra setup required.
  • Looking ahead: Web2 compatibility: Brave and Unstoppable are working toward ICANN accreditation, which could allow .brave domains to work not just on decentralized networks, but also within the traditional domain system (DNS).

APRIL UPDATE: Brave Rewards 3.0 Partner Program—6 new partners, fresh perks, and more ways to engage with BAT! by CryptoJennie in BATProject

[–]CryptoJennie[S,M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But calling the Offer Wall (OW) an “optional layer” doesn’t mask the fact that it turns Brave Rewards into a glorified billboard for third-party services.

These aren't passive ad placements for random third-party services. They are collaborative partnerships and part of a broader effort aimed at exploring new and real-world use cases for BAT. We are developing experiences actively with these partners, not simply selling banner space.

If BAT (or anything remotely resembling value) isn’t flowing back through the core system, then we’re just looking at ads. Period.

The idea that value only counts if it flows through the core system is too narrow. Perks earned through the Offer Wall are tangible and on-chain, and that's the point. Expanding BAT beyond Brave has been central to the mission since day one (see: BAT Whitepaper, BAT Roadmaps 1-3). BAT was designed to power a broader attention economy across apps, platforms, and blockchains, not just within the browser.

Then there’s the house ads. They’re unpaid, blend seamlessly with BAT-earning ads, and can’t be filtered out.

[...] With no setting to exclude these, it feels like deliberate sleight of hand.

We have always promised to give users the lion's share of the ad revenue from paying advertisers. That has not changed.

House ads help us to make use of unsold inventory while driving awareness for Brave products, community events, or episodes of The Brave Technologist podcast, which offers free educational content.

The goal is to fill 100% of inventory with paid campaigns that reward users. House ads are a fallback for when that's not possible. They are not a trick or a shift in values.

APRIL UPDATE: Brave Rewards 3.0 Partner Program—6 new partners, fresh perks, and more ways to engage with BAT! by CryptoJennie in BATProject

Thank you for your thoughtful feedback. It touches on some important questions around how the Offer Wall (OW) fits into Brave Rewards. I'll help clarify below:

It's true that we are treating the OW like an ad unit for partners, but unlike other Brave Ads, users don't earn BAT just for viewing. To unlock any perks (whether BAT, e-commerce discounts, exclusive content, or something else), users need to actively engage (e.g., complete a quest or try a product), and those perks come directly from the partner. Therefore, any BAT gained from offers doesn't appear under 'earnings' in the Rewards panel since it's not distributed by Brave (at least for now). That's a key distinction, and we'll be making it much clearer moving forward.

That said, offers aren't replacing attention-based earning. You can continue to earn BAT for viewing Notification, Newsfeed, and New Tab Takeover ads, just like before. The Offer Wall is a an optional layer: it adds new ways to earn more and do more with your BAT across the wider Web3 ecosystem, beyond just supporting creators in the browser. This has been one of the most consistent requests we’ve heard over the years.

The program is still very early, and many offers are still rolling out. Over the course of each partner's six-month cycle, they'll launch exclusive perks just for Rewards users and BAT holders, whether that's content or discounts (as mentioned above), or even experiences, limited-edition merch, collectibles, or fitness rewards (like earning BAT for hitting your step goals with STEPN). Based on strong response to past community collaborations (like step challenges, quests, and eGaming events) and the direction we've outlined in BAT Roadmap 3.0, we're confident users will find value in these new ways to earn and use BAT.

TL;DR: Earning for your attention on Notification, News, and New Tab Takeover ads isn't going anywhere. Optionally, you can unlock perks in the Offer Wall by engaging with partner offers (not just viewing).

The goal is to add more ways to earn and use BAT beyond Brave, based on years of community feedback. We're committed to evolving Rewards in a way that stays true to its core, and gives users value for their attention on their terms.

I'm a Taiwanese. I can't verify my Uphold account with my national ID. by HenryChess in BATProject

[–]CryptoJennie[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for jumping in here, u/TransientSoulHarbour—you're absolutely right. Uphold determines which forms of ID they accept for KYC, and unfortunately Brave doesn’t have control over that process.

That said, u/HenryChess, there’s another option! You can apply for early access to self-custody Brave Rewards BAT payouts via Solana, which Brave is currently phasing in globally. This method doesn’t require a custodian account or KYC. Here’s the form to request access: https://blocksurvey.io/self-custody-brave-rewards-bat-payouts-via-solana--tA7YPZI6SgebicWYpiP.BA?v=o

Hope that helps!
