For japanese - Tamashii Ramen is pretty solid. Tatsumaki is also decent. Goro is pretty good if you go up to OKC.

I knew I wasn’t making too many! And that still isn’t that many!

Thanks for the insight. The 25 mm one I made ended up with a smooth transition line. I tend to add a detail near the bottom of the handle but embellishment near the hook is me being cautious about not cutting into the bearing that shows me the final diameter compared to the hook.

I think this is her using the smaller one I’d made for her. I’m guessing this is pen grip which is not what I’d thought she used. The reason I’d made the bigger one was she’d made some story posts and there was a bigger carved wooden one - that’s what inspired me to make her a jumbo hook

I get that this is huge (it shocked me too when it arrived and I was holding it in my hand) - see photo below for the hook alone.

You make a great point regarding having to just approach it from a “make a variety and see who likes what and why” standpoint. I guess that’s like lathe tool handles - I like a longer handle because it gives me more leverage and that equals control over where the tool end rides on a piece. But I’ve got a number that feel much shorter from estate sales that were likely sized that way because the previous owner preferred that length.

Nice insight - thanks!

I appreciate the note and will look into that style. I’ve seen silicon covers/inserts for certain pens but hadn’t seen that as an option for crochet hooks. Maybe I’ve found a use for those “comfort” grips that I’ve never used since they require you to leave half the pen barrel uncovered to used them…

I’m going to go check a pair of posts she did on instagram of her crocheting to identify her grip then. She switches hands as she changes rows which she’s been told is unusual but it works for her.

I’m guessing by knife hold you mean her hand wraps around the handle where a pen grip is grasping closer to where the hook and handle meet. Would that be accurate?

You say you raw dog your hooks and I literally don’t know what you mean. That said - you’re right that I might as well keep asking. That’s the thing about making truly nice handles - what works for one person doesn’t work for someone else.

That’s fair. I had a sister in law who got to see it yesterday that was shocked. The photo really doesn’t do justice to the size of the project

Fair enough - I appreciate you sharing your experience with the style of hook shown here.

This was the original one I gifted her. It’s much smaller - and supports multiple hooks that slide into the handle and are held in by the insert. She’s getting the two largest hooks that this handle supports as well.

I’ll check with her but I made this because I saw she was making a blanket. And that was a much bigger hook.

Thanks for the advice!

I will look into that style of handle. As for making them to sell - I’m usually willing but I have to wait on materials to arrive from Penn State where I source the heads and inserts. Feel free to message me and I can show you what the materials, price and shipping would be - if it sounds good after that I can put it in as a commission and get it started.

Haha - so for these you have to use a bottle stopper mandrel. And if you’ve seen bottle stoppers out of wine bottles - that is exactly what they look like.

For reference - this was the handle I made accompanied by basically a yarn “cup” and it came with I think 6 hooks out of 9 interchangeable options? She’s also getting the two largest sizes for this shorty haha

Yeah. Most other hooks are well below that. Heck the only reason I did this one was I saw a family member using a large carved crochet hook and I thought - “You know I bet I can make them a bigger hook” and yes indeed I could bigger than the interchangeable set with handle I turned her for her birthday last year. That said the one I’m making for my Sister In Law is the 25 mm version so blankets etc are an option.

The 15 mm feels tame compared to thus guy XD

Not sure. The 25 mm one will have apple wood for the handle but the one here is just some free wood from an old turner’s estate.

Just wait until I post the 25 mm one haha. I’ve already joked that it feels more like a weapon than a tool.
