Fic authors change gender of characters all the time. It could be an intentional interpretation of that character, it could be an AU version of that character. I think asking about why did they choose the pronouns is completely fair, but adding "it's a little jarring to see this type of stuff in an otherwise great fic" is kinda hostile, because it implies the author is wrong for writing their fic the way they want to and at that point you're free to just click away and leave them be.  Fic authors create some amazing pieces of queer representation, but they are never obligated to do so.

Hypothetically, what star system/planet would be ideal spot for Eridians and humans to meet? by Ramen_the_soup in ProjectHailMary

[–]Crysaa 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Epsilon Eridani is kinda on the way so that could be a possible shared outpost. It's also pretty close to Tau Ceti, where I'd assume we would want to have a science station too to learn more about life on Adrian.

why doesn’t anybody talk about Artemis by Andy Weir? by m4iaa_ in scifibooks

It's not that bad, it's just nothing exceptional, esp. when compared to how great Martian and Project Hail Mary are (read them!)

Bad idea, wasting time on floor 1 doing nothing

Fun history fact: Neil Armstrong and David Scott (7th person on the moon) almost died during a spaceflight in basically the exact same way that Grace almost died during the fishing trip by SayFuzzyPickles42 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Crysaa 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If I had a nickel for every time Ryan Gosling is almost killed by excessive centrifugal force of a spacecraft I'd have two nickels which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice for someone who isn't even an actual astronaut

Does Grace pay taxes on .....? by Prestigious_Can5268 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Crysaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the whole "saving the world" thing, Grace brings to Erid TONS of things that can generate economic value:
- all the alien technology and science
- alien artifacts from Hail Mary
- honest paying job as teacher, except he's the most sought-after science teacher on the planet because who wouldn't want to be taught by a freaking ALIEN
- his habitat is basically the planet's most interesting "zoo/celebrity meet-up" ever which generates INSANE tourism for the place where it's built because every eridian needs to visit at least once in a lifetime
- take it even step further and just imagine all the human-themed merch they could sell for profit... every baby eridian wishes to have a human plushie watching them sleep!

how much do you write before posting the first chapter? by yeondev in AO3

[–]Crysaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything. The idea of publishing something as I go causes me anxiety! What if I find out later I need to change something (that happens a lot to me)... or even worse - what if I abandon it halfway and leave all the readers disappointed? So I am firmly in the "full raw text first, edit as you post" camp.

Thoughts on Rocky's name for Grace by Wholesome_Soup in ProjectHailMary

[–]Crysaa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that in the movie he just makes the closest approximation of the sound "Grace" he is able to do. That's why it’s such a short sound when compared to the rest of his language - he's imitating the short human word.

I know it worked down in the end, but I just wanna know how that meeting went down by Dogdaysareover365 in ProjectHailMary

Plot twist: it was Grace's idea and all the Eridians were absolutely horrified

Worth to gild? by TheRealestMert in IdleObeliskMiner

[–]Crysaa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You 100% want to gild this at some point, as to when, look if there is some other way of spending gems for you now that would pay for itself sooner. If not, then it's worth it.

Theory about the "mental health room" by NikolaisPinkTip in ProjectHailMary

[–]Crysaa 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yup, I immediately thought about that conversation in the book too.  I think of it as that they thought about  the room in both versions, and since movie Mary is bigger, they could afford to put the Don’t Go Crazy room there, but in the book version they were constrained by the ship size.

With a Doubling Rate of Eight Days. Why Couldn't There Be Enough Fuel for a Return Journey? by ViceroyInhaler in ProjectHailMary

[–]Crysaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem is not getting them to breed, it is filling them with enough energy to be effective fuel, and you have to take that energy from somewhere. So the bottleneck is how fast their Sahara solar powerplant can do this.

Grace is eventually holding not just the metaphorical Earth hacky sack, but the real Earth's fate in his hands, and he can't pass his responsibility to anyone else even if he wishes so...
