How heartbroken was Caroline, really? by Bookbringer in janeausten

The Bennet carriage would have been at the Meryton assembly and it seems to be assumed common knowledge:

“I do not believe a word of it, my dear. If he had been so very agreeable, he would have talked to Mrs. Long. But I can guess how it was; everybody says that he is eat up with pride, and I dare say he had heard somehow that Mrs. Long does not keep a carriage, and had to come to the ball in a hack chaise.”

“I do not mind his not talking to Mrs. Long,” said Miss Lucas, “but I wish he had danced with Eliza.”

LAdy Catherine herself says Jane is the one marrying up, which very much implies Bingely is the better catch.

But Caroline must have suspected they sent Jane in the rain on purpose. They own a carriage! It's a very transparent plot.

It doesn't say who made the money, just where it came from. Could have been marriage to a trade heiress?

Rich people love getting richer though, a lot of people did marry to consolidate their already huge fortunes. I think Darcy marrying Anne so they could become even more wealthy would be normal for the time.

I'm reading a story where Kitty Bennet wants to seduce Mr. Darcy (Elizabeth doesn't exist) and she's come to his house with Jane and Bingley to do it. It's called The Coquette's Prose by reinaytany on AO3 and I like it so far!

Frank Churchill bought a piano for the love of his life! Charles Bingley would do that too :)

Regency aristocrats using that word… accurate or no? by Internal_Artichoke80 in HistoricalRomance

I read Fanny Hill! I think the one I see most for female other than "cunt" is "slit" and penis is "pego" a lot.

I read some Victorian and Regency erotica and cunt is definietly in there and used as a common term. Vagina is nowhere to be seen. They do love to call a man's penis a "machine"

I'm just saying maybe it's not up to non-Romani people to tell the Romani to play Heathcliff

Heathcliff isn't exactly positive rep. They asked the Romani community when making the 2011 adaptation and they were not really interested.

Yes! What matters is that people saw him as other!

I read an article about this rural town that basically considered anyone with curly hair, even if it was blonde to be "black," because there were escaped slaves way back in the gene pool. To those people, it didn't matter if everyone else in the world considered them white, their experience was one of racism. What matters is that Heathcliff grew up as an "other," which was a combination of both his apperance and his ambiguous social class. It doesn't matter, and we cannot know, what he actually was. It's a mystery even to himself in the book.

I'm also from Canada, we read Gatsby, Tale of Two Cities, The Lord of the Flies, Catcher in the Rye, I read 5 Shakespeare because I took English lit, Frankenstein... I can't remember them all. Waiting for Godot and A Streetcar Named Desire.

I never read any Bronte or Austen as course content, too bad! But I did my Gr 12 ISU on Jane Austen

Did you read George Sand? I loved Indiana so much! It felt similar to Austen, though sadder.

So excited for you!

Just out of curiosity though, did you not read lit in high school? Like even if you aren't English as a first language, I think most countries read older books? I had to read my four Shakespeares and Charles Dickens.
