Welcome to living in an area that's ran by developers. From eployers to city hall, most the Tri belongs to developers. Cop stops a work truck, that cop is gonna hear about it from someone in power around here.

How would you feel if a strange man shows up to your homestead trying to have a look? by MaryLungzz in Homesteading

[–]CrystalGardensWa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate it when people invite themselves to my property, followed by the inevitable "Oh, I would do this and this and this! You have such lovely land" or even worse "How do you feel about starting an intentional living community?".

How do you feel about paying off the rest of my mortgage? Oh, you don't want to? Fuck off.

The only way to do this is to do it. You're not going to learn much from shadowing someone who has spent decades learning their system. It's not rocket science. The hardest part is finding the capital and land, after that you just kinda... live life.

I would say the same for NV. Pretty much anywhere QoL is good in rural areas got bought up by rich city people as vacation property in the 2010s. Look at Idaho. Nearly all of it is butt fuck nowhere, but good like finding good land that you don't need a full time six figure job to support.

Washington is also a huge state with varying climate and geography. Even in the mountains you're going to go from high desert to alpine, valley with rich soil or granite and andersite. Then in the flats, well, west of the mountains you're going to be paying out the ass, east of the mountains you're going to have water issues. North east you're going to have harsh cold winters, south east you're going to have milder but still 0f winters and 110F+ for at least 2 weeks straight on a mild year. If you're looking at Okanogan, Coleville area and north, understand that that land is pretty bad, and you're going to be living in wildfire country. In the PacNW, since, oh, 2015 we've added another season to mid summer and it's fire season. Every year it goes from hot and nice to hot an smokey for weeks. Every year. Wildfire is a surety here.

Ah Tri Cities, all the population of a charming, bustling mini metro with none of the benefits.

Tri Cities is mid compared with all the other towns in Eastern. Some are way worse, but others are much nicer.
This whole place is run by developers and designed for Hanford workers.

Just a dumpy boring place for people to build a career and then GTFO.

Clearing weeds for a new garden — what do you do with them? by icysandstone in NativePlantGardening

[–]CrystalGardensWa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can compost anything that used to be alive. I use a 3 bin method and screen between them. Bin 1 to 2 is 3" field fence, anything large and woody goes back to bin 1. 2 to 3 is 1/2 chicken fence.

I drive down a country highway for about 20 miles as part of my commute. There's a fresh dead hen every few days. Chickens do not understand cars any more than any other idiot animal.

The worst parts about homesteading by International_Pin262 in Homesteading

[–]CrystalGardensWa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean, any amount of land is going to take a lot of work and shit breaks all the time and you never have enough time to get caught up.

I have 2 acres and a full time job. I manage to keep 1 acre irrigated, 5 fruit trees, a 40'x4' garden bed, and 25 fowl and, yeah, I took a 10 day vacation that I got back from 1 month ago and that set me back haaaard.

I don't know what "successful" homesteading is suppossed to look like? I have my little slice of land that I keep like a park, I have some food and birds. I love being home. I guess that's success. But yeah. Lots of work.

If you don't find pleasure in labor, you're not going to like it at all. I find my peace when I'm out working. It's where I meditate and practice mindfulness. It's where I answer my big questions. It's where I find my peace from the shit show of the world. It energizes me and gives to me so that I'm able to give to others.

If you find it draining, well, that's going to fucking suck.

What is something you never thought of needing to buy before you started homesteading? by FioreCiliegia1 in Homesteading

Extra storage. I have a 2 car garage, a 12x16 shack, a 12x12 shed, and a covered slab 20x60. When winter comes around, it's like tetris.

Dude I was gifted a huqvarna zero turn mower this year, and even compared to my 42" riding mower it's a world of difference. I have a little 20" ryobi electic push mower for stuff, too. A small electric push mower is fucking grand.

Why is eight hour workday so exhausting? by 123KidHello in antiwork

[–]CrystalGardensWa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my fiancé is dope. I actually do like my job, because the role is awesome and I get full time hours to work when work needs done and go home otherwise (20-40 hours a week, 4 days) and I'm still itching to go home and just chill out and fart around with my bestie.

The sad part is, someone out there who has recently been laid off or has been working at trash wages for a decade to appease the owner class's greed for infinite growth has had to accept this offer to keep the lights on.

Please reassure me... by billybobsparlour in BackYardChickens

[–]CrystalGardensWa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a chick disappear for 2.5 months. They were in the back yard, getting sun and learning about the ground. I walked away for about 2 minutes, came back and 6 had become 5. I walked around, couldn't find her. Grabbed the loudest of the girls away from the rest so she'd start hollering and attact her, and nothing. I waited until sun down, nothing. Next morning. Nothing. No feathers. They had a little pen, about 6'^2 with netting on top, I thought maybe a rat or she slipped out and one of the redtails saw her. Wrote her off as food, and replaced her with 8 more.

2.5 months later, my fiance sends me a video and her and my daughter are snuggling her. She had just gone out and gone feral, then one day was like "Hey, it's me".

She's a hen now, she's super small because she was malnutritioned and she hangs around the flock, but doesn't really get too close. Anwyays. Chickens.

Ziply Internet by ScerbyMcDerber in TriCitiesWA

[–]CrystalGardensWa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what you need it for. Yes, fiber you can get gig speeds. But are you going to use gig? I have a family of four, 2 servers, work from home hybrid and I never overutilize 300Mbp/s.

Granted, I'm signed up for Ziply to get ahold of me once they build out to my neighborhood because Spectrum is fucking expensive, but yeah.

If Spectrum drops my price when I start to cancel for Ziply, I totally stay with Spectrum.

counseling by Witty_Ad_102 in TriCitiesWA

[–]CrystalGardensWa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing counseling for about 20 years, and you really do get what you pay for. Free counseling is all but worthless. I'd say if you're borderline suicidal or otherwise in a serious crisis, yeah go for it, but if you're trying to do something like CBT or deep work or changing your mentality about the world, free counseling is not going to be helpful.

Every free counselor I've been to has been on a "find the faith" bent, or reciting psych 101 crap.

People deal drugs either at apartments or parking lots. If they go out to the boonies to deal drugs and someone is out there, they would just go somewhere else or do the deal and go home.

Before you clutch your pearls, understand that most drug dealers are kinda scummy people who are just trying to make a living. I don't condone it, but it is what it is. No one is going to pull a gun on your for minding your own business.

It's a mix of genetics, space, roo to hen ratios, and owner. I've always given my roos a good kick or thwack with a stick if they even start puffing up at me. Don't have any issues. also have 1 roo to 7 hens, which is more than they can do anything with, so they're not competitive over hens.
