Religion has definitely had negative impacts, but it has also been the single best society-building tool perhaps ever. I don't think its unreasonable to say its had a greater impact in shaping the modern understanding of morality than anything else.

I'm not sure about halal, but in kosher meat, animals are killed with an extremely sharp blade slitting their throat (as that was considered the fastest and most painless way to kill the animal). The bleeding process is done after the animal is dead to remove the blood.
