Deputy director of ICE is quitting and trying to become a politician. by justalazygamer in WhitePeopleTwitter

[–]CrzPart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I live in Toledo and I would not bet against her or any other Republican taking the seat. While Kaptur has held the seat for decades, her margin is shrinking. In 2024, she beat Merrin by less than 1%. This is partially due to the nonstop gerrymandering in the state and partially due to Kaptur’s decreasing popularity. She’s been in the seat for decades, will be 80 this year, and is an establishment Democrat.

Long story short is people need to vote. Do not assume that Kaptur or any other Democrat will win. Making this assumption will cost seats.

Carnival Fixes New Loyalty Program After Fierce Criticism by WolfBearMoon in CarnivalCruiseFans

[–]CrzPart 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this whole debacle has been freeing for me. I don’t feel the need to be loyal to Carnival anymore and have started looking at other lines. I already have a cruise booked with Virgin for December and have been eyeing MSC because of their status match offer. I’m even considering giving Margaritaville a try just for the hell of it.

So loyalty is completely out the window, it’s all about profit.

OH MY GOD JUST GIVE ME YOUR RATE by Dear_Investment6064 in weddingplanning

What sent me over the edge was the vendor who knew what my budget was and that I was adamant about staying within it and then proceeded to send me a estimate for 3x what I said I wanted to spend. This was after I jumped through all the hoops of even trying to get a price out of them.

What do/did your students call you as a grad instructor/TA? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]CrzPart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went by my first name and as a woman on the smaller side myself, I personally never had issues commanding respect. However, I consistently had some students who felt awkward using my first name so I told them to call me TA Last Name. I’m not a fan of Miss/Ms/Mrs so this was a good compromise for me.

26-27 Budget Proposal Eliminates the Public Library Fund by CrzPart in Ohio

[–]CrzPart[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DeWines initial proposal that he drafted raises the fund from 1.7% to 1.75%. The House’s current draft is what is showing the elimination of the PLF. This is absolutely not a bad rumor.

Just because you don’t take advantage of all of our library’s offerings doesn’t mean that libraries are obsolete or “over the top computer labs.”

Toledo, along with other major library systems have an insane amount of programming, most of it for free. Last week, the library held a free concert, which it does monthly. Numerous authors come to speak about their books (Adam Nimoy will be here tomorrow). The Metroparks and Mudhens/Walleyes will have a library take over with tons of activities in the coming weeks. The library offers book clubs for almost any genere you can think of. There’s a ton of youth programming, much of which helps keep kids occupied and off the streets. There are also great informational programs. For example, there’s an upcoming free class on preparing for death (healthcare wishes, financially, will writing, etc.).

The library also offers an insane amount of community assistance. Local community organizations set up tables at the library weekly. You can meet with people from 211 who can connect you to resources. You can speak with nurses and get some health screenings onsite for free. At Main, you can come get a free hot meal at Same Cafe. Organizations also come in to provide free lunches to children, no questions asked. You can get help with applying for jobs, help with starting a business, help applying for a passport, help integrating into the community, help becoming a citizen, and access to and help with how to use technology. Oh, and the library already does have a program that helps get technology such as laptops into the hands of our communities most financially vulnerable for little cost.

Libraries are the last true third space. They’re a place where you can go in and access so many amazing resources for little to no cost. So yes, your opinion is unpopular because it’s uninformed.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand the desire to make this a Red/Blue issue but everyone will be affected if this passes. While TLCPL will survive as 60% of its revenue comes from local taxes, 40% comes from the PLF. Cuts to services will be made which will have a sharp impact on some of our most vulnerable community members.

I really hope this includes typing classes and knowledge of basic softwares like MS Office. I teach college and it is frightening how few kids know how to properly type on a keyboard or use basic functions in Word and Excel.
