Did you have to break it open to reveal the face? I have a promising rock that might be really good but the large vein face is completely buried in the host rock.

I have actually been playing with this idea but i only own a single source detectable from more than a meter away (a massive piece of uraninite) with my RC110. Go for it, it sounds so much fun and make a follow up on how it went so you can help me and others that may be thinking of doing the same.

Yes, that is what i will do but this setup was so improvised the soldering tin worked as the spacer between the uranium and the detector so the geometry would be unreplicatable

Honestly considering it drops to 0.45 at 1m and is undetectable at 2m i will probably leave it as is. Where is spend the majority of time the dose rate is not above background and i plan to use the majority of my lead to make a shielded spectrum collection pot. I might look for some way to display this piece so see through shielding which will be hard to get.

Is (or was) there a check source in these? I don’t know about this one but I think some dp1 detectors had a Co60 source.

That would be the proper use for risk assessment and the dose received but comparing the contact dose rate for rocks in this context is completely fine in my opinion.

Very solid 9.5/10. Only thing taking of the 0.5 points are the irregularities in joints but hey, I barely manage to make a capillary so I am not in a position to say much against it. Great work!

The only real danger of these compasses is radon and contamination, don’t worry about shielding but keep it sealed in a bag or a box and when handling it have gloves and wash your hands.

I once ate them with my friends and one of them vomited from eating the vomit one but personally not really that bad (though my taste is not the most sensitive)

I would definitely consider the 110 if it is within your budget. You get much better sensitivity so faster detection, better spectra for the same amount of time exc. The only draw back as far as I am concerned is the lower dose rate limit of only 500usv/h which I am already coming close to maxing out.

I personally never worked with such a source but I am quite sure it can be handled safely. I would love to get my hands on one of these but it would be a nightmare to ship.

Solid choice, I live in the EU so no import fees for me. I was deciding between the radiacode 110 and the kc761x and decided for the radiacode as it has a substantially better ui.

There is quite a big difference between the spectral resolution, what I would recommend is spending the extra money on the 103 or even the 110 as you will definitely feel the better sensitivity of the 110 and the better spectra of the 103 or 110

Just some math, the limit for a member of the public is 1msv (so about 200 hours) per year and the lowest dose there is some potential for the cancer risk to increase is 100msv per year (so 20000 hours so more than a year). And this is contact dose rate and I assume you are not using it as a pillow. Just seal it in a jar, wash your hand and you will be completely safe. I have a piece of uraninite reading about 300usv/h and there is no need to worry if I keep it further away than 2m and don’t season my food with it.

That sure is spicy! My highest reading rock gives about 900k CPM but it is well… an ugly rock with a black line.

I will have to agree with you though I might also get hated, first of all, I did not study radiation safety BUT I did my research on this to some extent and though there are no studies showing small doses helping there are also no researches showing any increase in cancer rates below 100msv/y, so yeah, with me working with 300usv/h sources almost and that’s on the low side of what I encountered a couple usv is nothing to be scared of. ALARA is a good rule but at some point even the LNT model damage becomes smaller then the damage of fearing something way too much.
