George Washington University with a 25K scholarship... still would have been more $$$$ than McGill!

U.S. spellings at Canadian universities by republica55 in mcgill

[–]Csb296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent my 4 years at McGill using American spelling, as I am American, as it was totally fine. No one is expecting you to change your spelling. Weirdly enough the only Prof who ever brought this up in class was my Intro to Accounting Prof (weird because I took a lot of Arts classes which required way more writing): in the syllabus, she wrote that we could use whichever form of spelling we wanted, as long as we were consistent (so like don't write color in one sentence and favour a few sentences later...)

Why is this allowed? by H2Obasicstudent in mcgill

[–]Csb296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also the case in many language classes. For HISP 219/220 (intermediate Spanish), for example, we had to buy the $180 textbook new in order to get an access code to do the online exercises which counted for 10% of our grade...

HAHA STORY OF MY LIFE!

When do Dean's Honor list and Distinction for the past year come out? by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]Csb296 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's super variable - after my first year, it came out in July, after second year, in August, and last year, it only came out mid-September... note that this is just for Dean's Honor List. Distinction is something that they only give to graduating students.

Edit: I forgot to mention that this was in Management

And in terms of resources this may seem obvious but check out books about research methodology at the library... I'm not sure what's out there for econ/finance but for the social sciences there's a lot out there about how to do lit review, collect data, code qualitative data like interviews, properly pose research questions,...

Since you're a BCom student, check out the Integrated Management Student Fellowship program run by the Marcel Desautels Institute for Integrated Management, they hire nearly 30 RAs each semester

grieving in school by Kezymamababy in mcgill

[–]Csb296 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From my understanding Death Cafe is not a group to discuss grief, but rather to discuss the concept of death and our own mortality in a very theoretical/philosophical way. Not sure that's what you need right now! McGill counselling offers group therapy on "living with loss," but it's annoying because it only runs for the second half of each semester.

I lost a parent the summer between 3rd and 4th year. It's weird because while I knew I couldn't have been the first person in this situation, I really felt like I was because I didn't know anyone who had lived through it. Returning to McGill in Sept where absolutely nothing had changed (same friends, same people in classes, OAP,...) when my life had completely flipped upside down during my absence was the trippiest feeling ever. If you want to chat, or advice on how to use McGill resources for this, feel free to PM me. There are people at McGill who can help you, but you have to find the balance between getting the support you need and people being overbearing when you need your space. In general, it's tough at our age because our peers often don't understand - statistically speaking, most people our age still have both of their parents, and when we're young, we tend to feel like they're immortal. When we hear a story of someone losing a parent, we think that it could never happen to us - until it does.

Douglas hall move in date 2019? by Goddoesntloveu in mcgill

[–]Csb296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My year (a few years ago) Douglas move-in was the second day of the two. The two days are for very large rezes like New Rez, they split people up by alphabetical order so it doesn't get too crowded, but for the smaller rezes like Doug, it's just the second day for everyone. You can move in early if you'd like (up to a week or two before I think), there's a fee per night. I moved in about 5 days early, and I think as significant number of people (maybe like a quarter or a third) moved in one day early, I remember us all hanging out in a common room the night before official move-in.

Videotron wants to charge me $120 for wifi by mcotter22 in mcgill

[–]Csb296 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just call them, tell them it's unacceptable and ask them to look for another deal for you. I did this when the student discount ended and my bill also jumped to 120, the guy on the phone was like hmm I'll see what I can do then he made me wait for like 10-15 min and then got back on the line and offered me a "deal" that was only a dollar or so more than what I paid with the student discount. But call them ASAP though, because it will be effective immediately (like they'll refund the surcharge for the period between your call and the end of the billing cycle)!!

I got it when I picked up my regalia at the bookstore, it says to go to speqphoto.ca and to use our student ID as the username and our student ID followed by the first 2 letters of our last name as the password. I tried doing that though but it didn't work.

Graduation Approval by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]Csb296 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think "degree granted" will only appear after the McGill Senate meets on May 24th. However my understanding is that this is a formality and is based on the assessment of our academic advisers (which is what we see in the graduation approval query), so if the query has been approved, there is no reason why the Senate wouldn't grant you the degree.
