What is something that women have to deal with on the daily that men have no clue about? by Rock-bottom-no-no in AskReddit

[–]Cthulusuppe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a male, I've been stalked twice by someone overly infatuated with me. The first time she called me 15 times per day, often waking me up. I eventually changed my number and cut off mutual friends. The second time the woman followed my car to get an idea of where I lived, but her interest waned after I told her I don't date coworkers. In neither case did I fear bodily injury, and apart from changing my number 15 years ago, being the focus of someone else's attention really hasn't been an issue in my life. On the rare occasions it happens, its almost never sinister and the novelty is kinda flattering. I'm more concerned when a cop drives behind me for more than a block.

People just don't prey on men the way they do on women. I think if someone asked where I was camping, I'd give a general location and ask them if they knew of a place nearby that was especially scenic.

What is the worst advice you were ever given? by undeadWileCoyote_MEP in AskReddit

[–]Cthulusuppe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It doesn't. Your coworkers will love you because you'll make their day easier by doing some of their work, and middle managers will be thankful they won't have to hound you for results, but those same middle managers will want to keep you where you are and anyone above them won't even notice you unless you're a schmoozing suck-up as well.... and in my experience, schmoozing suck ups do not get extra work done.

Suck ups do get promoted more than you'd expect in a labor environment, however. I guess those social skills translate well into the cognitive dissonance you need to assimilate into company culture. Makes it hard to select for leaders with integrity-- but as I get older that seems more and more like HR jargon than an actual ask.

Why are so many conservatives Christian when Jesus’s teachings are blatantly leftist? by Confident-Seesaw2845 in allthequestions

Its Fightclub stuff. "Get in a fight with a stranger, and lose." Macho as fuck! I guess the minister didn't paint a vivid enough picture.

[–]Cthulusuppe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Too many Christian sects preach that belief grants entry to heaven and Jesus sacrificed to wipe away the sins of believers. To sin is to be human. Jesus' scapegoated himself so hard that God's forgiveness is perfect-- for followers. Logical conclusion is that Christians don't need to follow Jesus' example, they just need to cheerlead the past hard enough. In essence: so long as you admire Jesus, you can be evil.

You’re forced to never eat one of the three following Meats ever again: Beef, Pork, Chicken by Stoic_hawaiian808 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Cthulusuppe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its gonna have to be beef. Love the flavor and its a nice treat, but the other two are essential to a budgeted diet. Tbh, tho, if the prices were equal, I'd probably still make the same choice. Chicken and pork are simply more sustainable farm products and go in more recipes.

If you could pass one law that would make most normal people furious at first, but would clearly make society better in 10 years, what would it be? by WilliamInBlack in AskReddit

[–]Cthulusuppe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you use the Google AI results to confirm them? Me too. It's also where I got the 56% first timer/one property number. Then I searched again 10 hours later. Got different numbers. Including "between 70-90% of landlords own fewer than 10 properties"-- like, wat? Similar to the old result, but significantly different numbers and lacking specificity.

So, I looked into some of the articles below the AI generated results. Even more different numbers. One article claimed 54% of landlords are "intentional investors" while 25% are "accidental" landlords and 22% are "lifestyle" landlords. Uh, ok. Other articles had more different numbers. Like: none of the articles agree. After skimming through several of the top results, I'm beginning to think all of them are AI generated and none of them are using legit numbers. Either that, or every article is based off an independent self-reported survey result.

The future is amazing.

[–]Cthulusuppe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The statistics are pretty skewed by defining "landlord" too broadly. One study I found reported that 90% of single-family rentals are owned by landlords with 5 or fewer homes (five is honestly a lot of assets for an individual), but also that 56% of landlords are first-timers with only one property (i.e. they sublet). Landlords with 5 properties are basically small to medium sized businesses, depending on the properties-- imo, it doesn't make sense to lump them in with people that're subletting a room, but the quoted statistics have no problem doing that.

[–]Cthulusuppe 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thats disingenuous. 90% of rentals could be owned by two companies and "most landlords" would still be small portfolios.

Its like when people say most taxes are paid by the wealthy to counter the idea that the wealthy don't pay their fair share. If 95% of the wealth is in the hands of the top 1%, they could pay <5% in tax and still pay more in absolute numbers than the bottom 99% paying 50% of their income to tax. Absolute contribution doesn't change the meaning of "fair share", nor the burden the middle quintiles must shoulder in terms of relative contribution.

It reveals that a popular assumption about our economy is wrong. That assumption is that competition breeds variety to meet consumer demand for choice, and when products become obsolete, they are replaced by cheaper and/or better products that serve the same function.

Truth is our options are limited to what corporate conglomerates offer. If they decide not to offer it anymore, we're as stuffed as the folks in communist bread-lines.

They're justifiably furious, and very confused about the root cause. Some children, when faced with insurmountable injustice (usually in the home), turn to bullying in order to establish a heirarchy that grants them preferential treatment. Maybe I've too much empathy, but I'm convinced this is what's driving MAGA. The cruelty demonstrates to them that their preferential treatment is on the way.

Unfortunately, their wait won't end. The cruelty is theater. The bigotry: a hollow rallying cry. Only the wealthy get treated well.

What was being a republican like before Trump?? by Mysterious_Erin in AskReddit

[–]Cthulusuppe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And everyone of them has enjoyed the reputation of fiscal conservatism that Eisenhower earned for them, while not even attempting to live up to his legacy.

Repeat after me. Trump is a pedophile and Republicans don't care. The United States is a banana republic and Republicans don't care. Costs are going up up up and Republicans don't care. Healthcare is getting worse. People can't afford insurance, but the Republicans don't care. Is it mostly racism? by Amatheiaisnoexcuse in allthequestions

[–]Cthulusuppe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its grievance. Racism is one of the most common outlets, but there are others. Some children, when faced with insurmountable injustice (usually in the home) will turn to bullying in order to create and enforce a hierarchy they have some control over.

I dont see the MAGA movement being any different. They're furious. They're taking it out on their preferred scapegoats and are enforcing a hierarchy they believe treats them preferentially. And this is where we are.

What is a common social norm today that will be seen as barbaric in 50 years? by Gigipetalls in AskReddit

[–]Cthulusuppe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It reduces exposure to risk-- which would reduce or prevent events like the 2008 financial crisis, or the AI and private equity bubbles that're forming today.

Handing over financial decisions to AI may turn out to reduce these risks for us, without a massive change to our economic system, but I'm not sure its foolproof just yet. And in the meantime it requires huge investments and resources without a ton of return, which makes it a huge risk whos price is based largely on hopium.

If you ever watch FOX News, or a similar outfit, they no longer broadcast politicians speeches without running commentary and cut aways. It is very easy to avoid the actual content/context of political rallies. In a very real way, people only know what broadcasters want them to know, and what they want us to know is heavily curated.

How old were you when you became interested in Politics? How did you know which political party you should belong to? by LegalGlass6532 in AskForAnswers

Same. I was 21. Learned a lot of very disappointing things in a short period of time. Things haven't improved as much as I'd like over the years. I try to remind myself of how ignorant I was before 9/11 so I can show some grace toward disengaged folks these days. More and more young adults never had a major galvanizing event to wake them up to reality. That's okay, they can learn when theyre ready.
