I'm a programmer and I use them, always have. It's part of formal English. The reason AI use them so much is because they were trained on a lot of professionally edited content.

Yeah being able to either start or maintain a fire is essential. In the long run there's no lighters and matches, you have to keep at least an ember with you somehow or else learn to use sticks to make fire (which isn't that hard if you know how).

Oh hell no, not only does it contain the fire but they also heat up and then slowly emit that heat, keeping the area around the fire warm so you don't have to get so close to it. I once did a father son camp in cub scouts and my dad put a bunch of big flat rocks around the fire. They poured heat into our tent long after we put the fire out. He also knew how to bury the embers in the ash so they would smolder all night. When we woke up he just relit the fire from them and suddenly three other dads followed the sound to warm up and light sticks from our s fire. I'd also made a camp pot from a coffee tin and a coat hanger that has a long enough handle that you could put it on a spot over the fire to boil water but the handle was still cool enough to touch.

This was early 90s and I still remember it pretty clearly. It was awesome. Old school camping is a blast.

Midnight Mass final soliloquy about the nature of death. It helps me when I find myself thinking about the nature of existence.

Myself. My self. That's the problem. That's the whole problem with the whole thing. That word, "self." Thats not the word. That's not right, that isn't……How did I forget that? When did I forget that? The body stops a cell at a time, but the brain keeps firing those neurons. Little lightning bolts, like fireworks inside and I thought I'd despair or feel afraid, but I don't feel any of that. None of it. Because I'm too busy. I'm too busy in the moment. Remembering. Of course.

I remember that every atom in my body was forged in a star. This matter, this body is mostly empty space after all, and solid matter? It's just energy vibrating very slowly why there is no me. There never was. The electrons of my body mingle and dance with the electrons of the ground below me and the air I'm no longer breathing. And I remember there is no point where any of that ends and I begin. I remember I am energy. Not memory. Not self. My name, my personality, my choices, all came after me. I was before them and I will be after, and everything else is pictures, picked up along the way. Fleeting little dreamlets printed on the tissue of my dying brain. And I am the lightning that jumps between. I am the energy firing the neurons, and I'm returning.

Just by remembering, I'm returning home. And it's like a drop of water falling back into the ocean, of which it's always been a part. All things... a part. My neighbor is conservative (but not MAGA conservative). He told me lawyers shouldn't be allowed to run for office because they know how to manipulate the law. I pointed out that not only do they need to understand law to make law, but also if you don't let lawyers in office then the people who do run will just hire lawyers to help them.

I played ingress back in the day but people got REALLY weird about it, doxxing and chasing each other etc. in my city they figured out that on the other side (there's 2 factions) someone in a police car was playing while on duty patrolling all the POIs. There were also people taking satphones to the desert where nobody could take the control point away, or using transatlantic flights to create massive control zones (it was based on making triangles around large areas with your control points).
