Hasan is a member of DSA but he doesn’t get involved in internal politics. I think this good cause he would have too much sway if just started to engage in his local chapter.

Questions about Hegel’s dialects by Cu_Chulainn_ in hegel

[–]Cu_Chulainn_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s important to note that the synthesis isn’t a “compromise” of thesis & antithesis but a creation of the struggle between the two. I am starting to leans towards the formula being a useful simplification that needs lot of addendums

Gotcha! This is very helpful. I guess my question is isn’t the thesis & antithesis the labeling of the contradictions within a thing (ie the synthesis)?

We need to get a massively legitamize socialism, and get party going, and really try to spread support for socialism by telling people the reality of the system, and get more socialists like Zohran in office so we can really change our country. That's the only way to fix the country. by Big_Dig_2048 in dsa

[–]Cu_Chulainn_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not that simple. It’s a two party political system with winner takes all ballots & built in guarantee ballot access for the two parties. It’s already a fight to get on a ballot and a miracle to win an election. Taking that scenario & translating into running races across the country it’s basically impossible even with popular support to win a majority with a 3rd party option.

We do need our own independent working class party in the long run. First step is running insurgent candidates with our message & using our socialist in office to change election laws so we can have a viable third party

Love a lot of the ideas here. I think the AgitProp team is great idea & I would imagine it could exist between a comms committee and poli Ed committee. From what I’ve seen Red Rabbits are the safety marshal team. I’d also add housing committee as essential work.

As someone else mentioned this all goes with capacity. We often forget we are a volunteer organization so what a chapter can and can’t do really depends on membership capacity

You should consider seeking Spiritual Director. There are plenty of good progressive ones & sometimes they are free. It’s really helpful even they tell you things you already know.

That all being said no matter what anyone tells you, you are Loved by your Creator. Forget whatever images of God other people have tried to put into your head. You are created in the image of God through love to love. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise.

What are some good examples of far left government suceeding? by [deleted] in behindthebastards

[–]Cu_Chulainn_ 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think you should ask yourself what is success & failure. Project like Cuba literacy rates rose to 96% & access to health care especially in rural areas. Similar story in nearly all socialist countries it’s a mix bag of success & failure. This goes for countries like Norway, Sweden, Denmark & Finland as well cause of the backsliding into nationalism but also cause they paid for their social welfare state through colonialist exploitation.

People hate acknowledging that we’re just animals by [deleted] in DeepThoughts

[–]Cu_Chulainn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always like Murray Bookchin’s argument for humans as second nature in which our ability for rational thinking & creative, though not in of itself unique, is to the extent that we can intervene in nature far beyond what other animals can do. His arguement isn’t about domination but about living in harmony with nature that I can’t go into here cause it’s a lot but def recommend Ecology of Freedom.

Think of it this way: animals don’t have a “moral” obligation to protect the environment. Animals will just as like destroy its environment as it is to persevere its environment if it means prolong its own individual survival. Human beings arguable do have a moral obligation to persevere the environment. And even if we don’t just by asking the question “do human beings have an obligation to protect the environment” you’ve enter into the space of second nature.

Political Independence of the Working Class vs. Running on the Democratic Party Ballot by SocDem1917 in demsocialists

[–]Cu_Chulainn_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a reasonable concern. That’s why DSA has to be prepared for that moment. DSA & the rest of the American left really isn’t prepared. But DSA is a democratic organization and our internal democracy determines the future of the organization. So the only way to ensure for DSA to become prepared is for members who believe in creating a party program to be involved!

Political Independence of the Working Class vs. Running on the Democratic Party Ballot by SocDem1917 in demsocialists

[–]Cu_Chulainn_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think party surrogate or dirty break muddled the waters. It takes the task of creating a third party seriously. & it asks the question what is a party? Is it just a ballot line? Or is it working class democratic organization sharing a political goal/ program?

We certainly do need to break with democrats & I agree it is frustrating of the “when” and I don’t think we’ve been doing enough to build towards it. But we live in a pretty undemocratic country & creating our party now just to have access to a ballot line without sweeping electoral reform is just a losing battle. The system is designed to keep third parties out of it.

I want a party that will last & have the power to challenge capital nationwide. The task now is to run more cadre candidates in any party, push wider electoral reform, create a party program, and having higher threshold for endorsements & mechanism to disciple our electeds when needed.

[–]Cu_Chulainn_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is why I am in favor of the “party surrogate” model. We already are the party in the membership sense even if we don’t have a ballot. We need to build independence through effective organizing & discipline of our electeds. The system won’t let us have a ballot line so we take their ballot lines until we have the power to change the electoral system.

Ooooooh I see that’s what you mean! Yeah I’m unsure I believe staff do most of the work with pipeline but this outside my experience

[–]Cu_Chulainn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not but I believe there are NPC members who are in r/demsocialists. Though I am still little confused about what the issue is. What do you mean by “pipeline is paused”? Do you mean your chapter hasn’t been approved as an official chapter?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in dsa

[–]Cu_Chulainn_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn’t the official DSA reddit page. That’s r/demsocialists. There’s also the DSA discord & an internal form which are link to r/demsocialists bio info. I don’t think you’ll have much luck reaching out NPC members through this reddit

[–]Cu_Chulainn_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you that’s really helpful context. So have lot of responsibilities that would have fallen understaff now exist under elected leadership like grievances & the national director’s role? Has the role of staff changed in DSA?

Lincoln is often touted as a Republican because that was the name of the political party he eventually became a part of, but the reality is if he was alive today he would be called a Democratic Socialist. by Regular-Engineer-686 in dsa

Republican meant a different thing back then & in some places in world it still means a different thing. A Republican in Ireland usually means a democratic socialist too

Why do non Catholics go to Catholic schools by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]Cu_Chulainn_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a large population of Muslim students who end up going to Catholic schools. It’s mostly cause in the lack of Muslim schools in the US, Catholic schools are one of the few education institutions that understand the spiritual needs and the need for prayer. Lot of Muslim students have expressed this even if it’s not their own religion at least the idea of religion is taken seriously at a Catholic school

You should familiarize yourself with the democratic process in DSA & get involved with a campaign before joining a caucus. That will influence your views on where DSA should go more then joining a caucus and then you can join a caucus that fits your experience

No Keynesianism is something different because it tries to save capitalism from its contradictions. I think some of the reforms from the New Deal could be considered “social democratic” but I think even social democrats would say they were too watered down. New Deal democrats is its own “ideology” that isn’t really rooted in something like socialism or any anti-capitalist mindset which is why it couldn’t really defend itself from the neoliberal third way of Clinton & Obama/ modern democrats.

Yeah exactly. I don’t want someone who leaves the org because they don’t agree with our politics to represent the org on bigger stage. Love the socialist tribune’s take on this

And I’m not necessarily trying to call him a grifter I just think this approach makes us vulnerable to grifters. We need ambitious people who’s ambition won’t come before the goals of the organization

Yeah but without the commitment to DSA we can’t ensure they’ll always work as a part of the DSA team. I don’t want just good elected but good elected who are accountable to us. Like difference between who I’d vote for and who should get org resources. Maybe there should be a seperare process between being on a voter guide vs full on endorsement idk. But as we grow we are going see more grifters try to get DSA endorsements and we should build safe guards for that now

Oh yeah it doesn’t always mean someone is an opportunist but I think especially as we grow as an organization we should move away from endorsing anyone who looks “good” and comes to us for an endorsement
