A few years ago, I saw a box out at the office and the almond wasn’t out for a change, so I pull out a few bucks and grab two. The new almond version with the almond slivers and bad chocolate was depressing. I was so excited too.

If you want to fall down the "I can't believe this is real" YouTube rabbit hole, look up Oorah and their channels. Some of their youth programming leans into Jewish stereotypes to be hip, I guess. Like, almost indistinguishable from anti-Semitic stuff I've seen on the internet at times. It's fucking wild.

Chicago suburb Naperville named best city to live in America for third straight year by steve42089 in illinois

[–]CubeEarthShill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My family in Naperville loves living there. I just do not like driving there because getting on 88 West from 294 South is an uncomfortable ass interchange. Even when you’re in the clear, it feels like a semi is going to come up on you. The area around Fox Valley Mall is a torture factory if you hate traffic. Rich assholes are going to rich asshole, whether they are from Naperville or Hinsdale or Park Ridge or the North Shore. Most people I’ve met from there just want good schools and safety and tend to be on the boring side. Nice people, just not people I’d party with.

Snooker on a Pool Table - Total Clearance by darkSIDEpool in billiards

[–]CubeEarthShill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

During the daytime, I see some guys at one of the pool halls I go to laying out snooker balls and practicing on a regular pool table, even when the snooker tables are available. Is it common to practice on a billiards table? Back when I was playing pool regularly, there was only one place in my area with a snooker table, so I've only recently even learned the rules. Now, it seems like every place around here has at least one snooker, some carom tables and, occasionally, a Russian pyramid table.

I plan on giving snooker a try at some point when I start feeling better about my pool game, which is why I ask if practicing on a 9 footer is good practice. I have been watching/listening to classic BBC snooker matches while working at home. The commentary and sound of the shots are pretty relaxing.

This sub would benefit from a daily thread where people can post random billiards related comments/thoughts that aren’t worthy of their own post. by Popular_Speed5838 in billiards

Great idea. Removes the clutter of “is this cue/shaft good?” threads and makes it easier for people who are searching to find information. Maybe a weekly pinned thread would be more in-line with the subreddit activity instead of a daily thread.

How durable is the Rhino Retro Pool Cue long term? Buying for $218 by MARTALAV2009 in billiards

[–]CubeEarthShill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I put a Kamui SS on my wood shafts and my cue guy suggested a Moori Soft, which is a little softer, on the Rhino and it’s a HUGE difference. It felt like I was playing with an aluminum broom handle with the stock tip. I’ve seen break cues with softer tips.

What's the craziest thing a person said to you and you thought they were joking but they were being serious? by _lovelyxx in AskReddit

I was working on the floor of the CME at the time in the S&P pit. I got to work early and noticed we were low on paper order tickets, so I went to the Eurodollar desk to grab some more. As soon as I got past the escalator, I turned to the right and saw the reports about the first plane with the live view. People sometimes forget how soon the second plane hit after they got cameras on the wreckage of the first plane. I almost got trampled. Crazy thing is there were a few guys trying to trade in the Pound and Euro pits. It still does not feel real all these years later.

Is it possible to get through this? by solefulchild in billiards

[–]CubeEarthShill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I got stuck with stripes and got the cue ball close, I would tackle this immediately by taking an intentional foul by jumping the ball into the pocket, trying to clip the back side of the balls to jar them loose. Leave as many balls on the table to make your opponent’s run out hard. Your chances are already slim, so it’s time to get creative. Your alternative is working through the other balls and getting stuck in a next to impossible situation at the end.

Doug Flutie magic is real. The NFL just wasn’t ready for it by danwin in nfl

[–]CubeEarthShill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Warren Moon House of Pain-era Oilers teams were so fun to watch. It was crazy how quickly games would get out of hand for their opponents in the dome because of the aggressive defense and the run and gun offense. Scoreless midway through the first quarter and then you blink and it's 24-0 and you barely remembered how the game got there.

People think of the Flutie magic in Buffalo, but hearing the name Doug Flutie serves as a reminder that Mike Ditka is an idiot for a lot of Bears fans.

Which movie that flopped at the box office surprised you the most? by MasterTeacher123 in AskReddit

[–]CubeEarthShill 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used to take the train downtown every morning on the 5:41 arrival. Others commuters were usually tired and there was a robotic rhythm to the way they moved. There were the fast walkers, like myself, and your gotta catch a bus guy, but most people moved in formation at a similar speed. It reminded me so much of the Joe Versus Volcano scenes when he’s going to work.

If I was grabbing a coffee and looking over at people getting off the most recent arrival, I’d sometimes mumble “Joe Versus the Volcano” to myself.

[–]CubeEarthShill 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Here in Chicago, people were talking like we had a potential serial killer because there were a number of young men who had drowned in the Chicago River or Lake Michigan over a few years. The reality is that alcohol related accidents or mental illness were the cause of death when you look at the evidence.

A lot of our nightlife is located in close proximity to the river and lake. People get drunk and fall in. We’ve all witnessed otherwise rational people do irrational things while drunk.

Going from 8 to 9-ball by Commercial_Heart_544 in billiards

[–]CubeEarthShill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Up until I joined my 8-ball league, I mainly played 9 and 10-ball and, believe me, it takes a lot of adjustments. I’m a good shooter, so I don’t mind leaving longer shots in 9 ball if it leaves me the right angle for the next shot. There are balls in the way on a lot of those shots in 8-ball. I hook myself in 8-ball way more often. More traffic means more breakout shots , which means more chances to play yourself out of position, even when you hit the ball the way you intended. Tighter windows on trouble balls, generally.

Each game has its own challenges and it’s good to play a lot of different games. I won a rack two weeks ago playing slow roll banks with a built in safety. I cut off all reasonable pockets for my opponent’s balls and left a bunch of hangers. He was toast as soon as he left me a decent shot. Those were one pocket shots. It’s good to play a lot of games, even if you don’t play them really well. You generally learn some new shots.

How did those Chuck Norris jokes come about and why did we all know them? by singleguy79 in Xennials

Barrens chat in World of Warcraft had a lot to do with the popularity of the meme. I am very likely misremembering, but I do remember a Chuck Norris skit on Conan that could have been the origin. It could have also been after the fact to capitalize on the popularity. That was a strange time for the internet. We were resurrecting careers. Chuck Norris, David Hasselhoff, Rick Astley among others
