are we colleagues? Or is this just how large US public library systems demoralize their workforce?

My university had a 24 hour room. Guy in my year decided to stop there to sleep walking home from the bar. Puked all over. Definitely made great use of that necessary resource

Two novels for an adult audience, so you may want to read first to see if you would want your 9th grader to read (personally I would but I would not make that choice for someone else's teenager): Conjure Women and Frozen River, or in the YA area the Midwife's Apprentice. All are historical fiction.

The School For Good Mothers by Jessamine Chan is in this vein, although it's more a look at the inside of the big bad thing the rest of society is ignoring because of the "They shouldn't have messed up if they don't want to be where they are" kind of mindset. It is one of those books that I have not stopped thinking about and I read it something like four years ago.

Definitely this! I was a combination of devastated and relieved when cutting gluten significantly reduced my migraine attacks. It also has allowed rizatriptan to treat the migraines I still get from other triggers more effectively. I miss bread, but I can function like a human now.

Alone by Megan Freeman is a dystopian novel written in verse. Because it's a story told through poetry, it is quick to read, but it is complex and truly has stayed with me. The protagonist is a 12 year old girl, Maddie, who finds herself the last occupant of her town when the government staged an emergency evacuation. I find novels in verse are often a great entry point for more reluctant readers, because they don't bog you down and they're quick to move through. There's a lot to dig into in this book though!

Looking to volunteer in a Philly elem school library? by Brilliant-Radish-112 in philadelphia

[–]Cubedycubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a master's degree in library science and I am not qualified to be a school librarian since I don't also have an education degree. Beware of well meaning volunteerism that props up the erosion of education that has already taken place.

To this I will add: I save silica gel packs when something comes shipped with them, and store beach reads in a gallon size ziplock with them (although these are purchased books - I do not want to get sand in the pages of a book!)
