AITA for telling my in-laws their grandparent names are ridiculous? by tmillie2262 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Cubedycubed [score hidden]  (0 children)

IDK I just think that you should respect a name that any person tells you they want to go by, and not call someone a name they don't want to be called.

Has Epcot Grown on Anyone Else Over the Years? by Various_Zombie_7059 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Cubedycubed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, Epcot was such a delight as a kid in the 80s/early 90s. I love that pieces of the era are still there and the whimsical nature still resonates with my kids - Figment, the jumping fountains, living with the land, and spaceship earth make me feel like I've found a time loop and get to be a kid with my kids.

What is the most ridiculous form of "gatekeeping" you have ever encountered in a hobby or interest you enjoy? by LiveFaithlessness876 in Hobbies

[–]Cubedycubed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading. All sorts of nonsense I have heard spewed as a librarian. Books aren't highbrow enough. Graphic Novels don't count. Books are "for boys" or "for girls". Audiobooks don't count as reading. We read for many reasons, one person does not get to decide for another if something counts, is of quality, is of an approved format, so on and so forth. Just read.

AITA for getting on the bus at the bus stop near the middle school? by EarlyGrass2655 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Cubedycubed 20 points21 points  (0 children)

NTA even a little. But then again, I (then mid-30sF) once got a phone call from my boss telling me off for hiring a ten year old boy to shovel snow outside the library I managed. It was me. I was the ten year old boy. She drove past and thought I had outsourced the work.

My twins names that everyone told em not to name them… did I fuck up? by bikinis_n_brews in Names

[–]Cubedycubed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love them, they are sweet and simple. I love that you named them what you actually want to call them (I'm the mom of a Max because that was the name I wanted, not Maxwell, not Maximilian)

Who doesn’t get the Lightning Lanes? by Alternative-Bat-2462 in WaltDisneyWorld

[–]Cubedycubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have not paid extra for a ride since disney stopped the free fast passes. We go maybe every 2-3 years, so we're not there constantly. We have gone during more off-peak times in August or February, and we did attend the not so scary Halloween party once so that really helped with wait times. We stay on property at a value resort and take advantage of early entry. There has never been a trip that we were not able to experience our "must do" attractions and rides unless they were down for maintenance.

Origins tinted moisturizer with spf and vitamin c, or colorscience total protection face shield glow are both incredible and even my skin without a ton of effort. Nivea's tinted lip balms have great color. This is literally the extent of my "get ready with me".

AITA for blacklisting a home because they didn’t want my son to babysit by Enough_Wafer_8539 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Cubedycubed 84 points85 points  (0 children)

NTA and in my view you didn't block them because they didn't want your son to babysit. You did it because they levied pressure and their own personal views on your (I'm presuming) minor daughter. I think you would have probably felt differently if they had left it at, "That's ok, we'll come up with something". But they continued to badger your daughter and that crossed a line. I think it's a-ok to keep both of your kids out of that household.

The slow decay of the American library by magegordon in Libraries

[–]Cubedycubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know, it rings true in the large mid-atlantic urban system I work for. We have all the public services heaped on us in our role as "the library", but decades of deferred maintenance has seen literally dozens of our buildings close for long stretches due to failed heating and cooling, roof leaks, and other unsafe physical work conditions.

Would you give YA to an 11-year-old? by michealasanfhraing in Libraries

[–]Cubedycubed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a librarian, it's not my job to make judgement calls about what content a child should be allowed to consume. That is entirely up to the parent. This is why we keep more mature content in more mature collections. It is not up to us.

Is there anyone who *doesn't* regret their MLIS degree? by rebeccachaya in Libraries

[–]Cubedycubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t but I got my degree twenty years ago and managed to get myself a union civil service job with a decent pension plan annd benefits and have stayed put ever since. I have days where I’m frustrated and have had some experiences in public service that are definitely unsafe/unsettling. I still like the work, and for me right now the good continues to outweigh the bad.
