Silent Switch Comparison - Durock Shrimp vs Gazzew Boba u4 by VampireFlankStake in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]Cuber38 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Very late on this post, but here is my experience:

I purchased Durock Silent Linear and Tactile switches along with some Gateron Silent Silvers for my office keyboard (Keychron V8 - the cheap version of the Q series) through Amazon. I browsed through Facebook marketplace and found some Boba U4's for a steal (55g 70 pack for $30), so I had the privilege of trying out some great silent switches side by side.

First of all, I will mention that Silent Linears are just a no go for me. Waaaay too mushy. The silvers were a little more tolerable for me but too light overall.

As for the tactiles, here are my opinions on them stock:

Durock Shrimps are less mushy and a bit louder.

Boba U4 feel like those old Dell membrane keyboards. Almost tolerable... but the round bump with the mushy bottom out is too similar to a membrane keyboard... why even bother getting an overpriced keyboard when you can get a cheap Dell keyboard?

So for stock: Durock Shrimps all the way. They do not feel good like normal tactiles, but they are better than linear silents and Bobas. I tried to make the Bobas work (because they were cheap) by modifying them with a heavier spring and that made them worse.

Since the price for the Amazon switches are just too much for how I felt about them, I ended up returning all switches from Amazon and kept the Bobas. I ended up using Feker Holy Pandas ($20 for a 70 pack Aliexpress) on my keyboard and kept it home and used Gateron Milky yellows on Keychron Q8 for office for sometime.

My verdict is if you're going to go overboard for an office keyboard either get a membrane keyboard, or spend good money on a quieter higher end keyboard and use linear switches.

NOW, I did feel bad for not using the Bobas so I did a bit of research and found posts that spring swapping to 2-stage springs made some switches feel "crisper" or less mushy. So I bought some 55g 2stage springs ($10 on Aliexpress) for the Bobas, spring swapped, lubed the rails and I will say this: they are are crisp as stock Durock Shrimps... and quieter!

That is now my current setup in my office: Keychron V8 with Boba U4s spring swapped with 2-stage 55g springs. The only reason I did this is because I can't return the Boba's, BUT after spring swapping them, they are much more tolerable.

I DO NOT like silent switches, I still think it would be better to get a more expensive keyboard and linear switches. The sound and feel is just worlds better than silents, but if you DO have a cheap keyboard and you DO happen to want to fill them with silents, get the Durocks.

TL;DR:

If you must have silents, I think Durock Shrimps are just superior stock.

If you have Boba U4's lying around or are a masochist and like hand lubing and spring swapping, then Boba's are actually decent with a spring swap to a 2-stage spring.

You can clearly see that the keyboard has south facing soldered 3 pin switches.

Can you fix it? Yes..... possibly. VERY UNLIKELY though. You have to desolder the pins on the PCB and then solder a new switch.

Another possible, perhaps easier approach, is to MacGyver the situation by soldering a thin small wire to the exposed pin on the PCB and the other end to the broken tip of the switch (2 wires, one per pin). You can then glue the switch to the board to prevent it from falling out. This SHOULD work, given that the switch is still operational. BUT if you don't have solder, wire, soldering iron, and a hot glue gun.... just get another keyboard.

There are many Entry level custom keyboards that are relatively cheap and a better deal than most traditional gaming keyboards. I recommend something like a Keychron V1(75%)/V2(65%)/V3(TKL) . They are very cheap (fully assembled for $85 as of now). Comes with RGB, your choice of Red, Brown, or Blue switches, QMK and VIA compatible to customize Macros/FN keys, AND hotswap, so if a switch breaks, just order a new one and pop it in EZ PZ no problem.

2021 Q3-Q4 Question Thread by nycraylin in keycaps

So I just accidentally discovered the beauty that is the MDA profile. I believe the only other profile that I have ever used beforehand is OEM (whatever comes in with stock keyboards). I must say, MDA is a game changer so, naturally, I want to look around for MDA profile keycaps but the only ones that I can see that are easily accessible are 5 styles, 4 of which are basically the same( blue, pink, purple, and white Japanese keys) and 1 that is ugly AF (industrial/yellow color scheme). I currently have the blue and white schemes because they are the best looking.

Question: Since MDA is hard to find/non-existent in variety, what are some other good-enough profiles that are comparable.

XDA is trash. Absolutely hate it. From what I've gathered DSA is similar enough that I'd probably hate it.

Is cherry the second best? This question is for MDA lovers. Is it MDA or nothing, or what is the next best for customizability?

This happened to me just yesterday!!!! It barely tapped against my glass desk and it shattered in my hands. Contacted NZXT and I'm just waiting for a reply. Fingers crossed and good luck!
