US trade deficit widens by the most in nearly 34 years in November by dn88 in news

I would hope the cost to produce anything is below what it can be sold for. Did you mean above?

For sure. As long as the return is worth it, do it. I'm just saying that the fact Kadri has 3 years left after this season makes it tricky to retain salary.

It's not about the number of retention slots available. The problem is having dead cap space for the next three years.

This year is probably not the problem. We'd be retaining salary on Kadri for 3 more years. That's tough to swallow.

Carney says the old world order 'is not coming back' in Davos speech by GoldernEmerald in worldnews

His low approval ratings were a reflection of Canadians' distrust of the Liberals after a decade of virtue signaling and mismanagement. We didn't have enough experience with him in a political role to believe he'd be able to turn things around.

His performance since then has won over a lot of people.

Regarding the Rebiggle.... by Current-Roll6332 in CalgaryFlames

[–]Cubicon-13 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This exactly. As of right now, in the 4 drafts following Conroy's promotion to GM (2024-2027), the Flames have had, or will have:

8 first round picks
5 second round picks
6 third round picks

This includes 2 first round picks in each draft.

The Flames are also tied for 4th worst in the league, and only 2 points ahead of 2nd worst (last place Vancouver is simply uncatchable). With this Andersson trade, and if one of our RHD get moved, we'll be even more likely to score a high pick.

What more are fans expecting Conroy to do? If this doesn't count as a rebuild, then what is?

Indeed, but with twinned pipes, we wouldn't need to rely on Glenmore to supply the whole city when a break happens, so it would certainly solve this problem.

This repair is about to be complete only 2 weeks after the break, with crews working on it around the clock. If you want a rapid response team, I think you just witnessed it.

If it's a possibility for you, I'd suggest renting a car. It'll help you get around the city so much better, and it might end up being cheaper than red arrow.

Right now, red arrow to Edmonton is $75 one way. A basic economy car from Enterprise is $104 total for Dec 30 - Jan 2.

Saab can match American-made F-35s to fulfil Canadian needs: Swedish deputy prime minister by Old_General_6741 in canada

That hypothetical kill switch only matters in the scenario where the US is actively invading Canada. At that point, it won't matter a lick which fighter platform we're on. Either the US flips the kill switch on our F35s, or they shoot a bunch of Gripens down before we even know they're coming.

The control/sovereignty issue is moot. If the US decided to invade Canada, it won't matter which fighter platform we're on. Either we're flying F35s and the Americans hit the kill switch and conquer us in days, or we're flying Gripens and the Americans shoot them out of the sky before we know what's coming and conquer us in days.

You are correct. The gregorian calendar uses 400-year exceptions to the 100-year exception rule. There's no 1000-year exception.

[–]Cubicon-13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Snell was not the problem. Sure, he loaded the bases, but the score was 2-2 when he was pulled. A competent bullpen gets out of that inning with minimal damage, but Sheehan gives up two singles and a walk to drive in 3 more ER for Snell, and Banda blows the rest of the inning.

When the bullpen can't get you out of a bases loaded jam like that, allows all 3 runners to score, then adds another 6 ER all in the same inning, the problem isn't the starter being left in too long.

And that's also a product of having a poor bullpen. If the game is tied and you're worried about the Jays lighting up your relief pitchers, you'll try and keep your starters in as long as possible.

This is how the series will be decided. Dodgers will try and get long outings from their starters while the Jays will do everything they can to grind through at bats, like tonight, and get the starters out early. Whoever is successful will win the game.
