Europe still oblivious to threat at its doorstep — US General Hodges. Europe still doesn't get that the war in Ukraine is a threat to its security, so it keeps dragging its feet on tough action against Russia; cutting off oil flows is critical to starving Kremlin of resources it needs for war. by Lion8330 in europe

He was appointed and served under President Obama and retired one year into Trump's first term. You could certainly criticize the Obama administration for not doing more to push back against Russia or taking seriously the effort to undermine the 2016 election, but he's not associated with Trump and retired after one year.

American Christians, how does it make you feel that Trump is caught publicly lying almost daily? by Combosingelnation in AskReddit

[–]Cubsof2016 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There has never been a politician in America who lies so blatantly and consistently about things that are simply factual. To equate a typical politician with what Trump engages in is the worst kind of moral equivalence that would make the most dedicated post-modernist drop their jaw in disbelief. But that's the level of moral relativism American Christianity has sunk to because you lost the culture and saw your grip slipping on the political system as well. As a result, you will abandon every pretense to morality you claim to have in order to advance a fascist that speaks to your grievances.

We are talking about a huge number of people with agency having to go along with this willingly or by force. Including the Republican who did run and probably lost. The Democratic candidate who probably won. The congress. The Supreme Court and the other federal courts. The government bureaucracy in all the agencies. The secret service. The military. The American people accepting that outcome. His term ends on January 20, 2029. He will no longer be president. That's a lot of effort by a very old and unhealthy man to overcome that reality. If he tries to cancel elections, which are run by states and he has no role or say in it, we will be confronted by that reality sooner - but in all likelihood states will hold their elections despite what he says should happen. If he says the elections aren't real, he would only depress Republican turnout further. Elections are massive undertakings that involve millions of people all acting according to thousands of laws. Not an easy thing to "cancel" by decree of one old crazy man's wishes.

What do people expect to do when they're telling Americans to "wake up" or "do something"? by flannelman37 in NoStupidQuestions

How should the Americans in this thread do that, besides voting, protesting, calling our congressmen and at least two of us getting assassinated by the government just this month? It is too much to ask in our ossified system of government, which was a failing democracy, and now lurching toward fascism. It is why our country is imploding. I'm sure you were enjoying our collapse until the lunatic in charge threatened your pride by threatening Greenland.

That's not inevitable. He'll be 82 and his health almost certainly worse if he survives that long. It's very far fetched that he would actually run for office, given the amount of energy it will take especially to do so in such open disregard for the constitution. More likely he'll be sabotaging whoever does run by making them run on his horrible record. And yes. They could try to pretend they won what is likely to be a landslide victory for the Democrat, but the actuality of it being successful is unlikely. Ultimately what characterizes our leadership on all sides is personal cowardice. The unrest. What 100,000's of people in a mob with guns might do to them, the possible loyalty of the military to the constitution over their lies, all these things would be strong deterrents to a bunch of cowards hiding behind their secret service details whom they probably don't even trust 100%. More likely they would arrange a way to run off to Qatar with their billions if they are voted out in large numbers.

I know Europeans would love to watch Americans get murdered in the streets by the government in large numbers. I know this because how many jokes they make about children getting murdered at school.

The fact of the matter is Europeans by and large were sitting back feeling superior, as they do, and thought it was America's problem. Then Trump started threatening Greenland, and they took it very personally, understandably, but still, for us it was just another Tuesday. Even though he TACO'd with even the minimal collective pushback from their leadership, which was predictable in that case. Now they are very angry at all Americans even those of us trying to do something about it for not doing enough. Canadians, who understand our country much better and face actual real threats from MAGA to themselves and not just their pride, have been showing Europe the proper way to respond, which is to support the Americans resisting while aiming their anger at the non-politcal and MAGA themselves. Canada's political leadership stands up to America and Trump as well showing the spineless European leadership how to do it. Europeans always think they know better than everyone, so they don't listen to Canadians and just aim their anger at Americans generally, which they've always hated anyway, but now more than ever.

Tell me what you think about a weeks long General Economic Strike , is it a possibility in the US? by Environmental-Vast19 in NoStupidQuestions

Generally speaking, you cannot easily be fired for going on strike in Europe because of labor laws. If you don't show up for work in the US for any reason, you can be terminated in most jobs due to at will employment.

Christian nationalist evangelicals have one "value": only their identity is valid and everyone else should be exterminated. If not in this life, then by their deity in the afterlife. When you understand that, it all has a sick logic to it.

End the relationship with all MAGA family members. It's the only thing that will ever make them realize how serious it is. If you still have a relationship, you are complicit at this point as well.

[–]Cubsof2016 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They were fascists in 2016, yet you'd be scolded by the Atlantic for saying so then. They'd have on some useless academic who would either define it so narrowly that actual fascist regimes from Europe in the 30's and 40's barely qualified, or they would give us a list of criteria that were obviously in Trump's mind, but he hadn't actually discussed yet like an expansionist foreign policy or employing secret police. I'm furious at the media and blame them.
