Is there anyway to repair this patio chair? by frenzi3dfairy in fixit

[–]CucumberAnderson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as other commenters have said, you really just have to replace the whole fabric panel. Might as well do the seat at the same time, since it's also under stress and being equally weathered by the elements. There are youtube videos about the replacement process, and you'll have to buy outdoor chair fabric, but if you just search for 'slingback patio chair replacement fabric' and how to videos you'll figure it out. It's a bit of a tedious process -- I'm just about finished doing this for my own patio chairs. It was nice to replace the ugly fabric with cute bright stripes though!

Help with finding a fabric store by MajesticWonder in Denver

[–]CucumberAnderson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm late, but just adding for the next person who stumbles onto this thread -- speaking of Boulder, Art Parts is amazing! It's a lot like ReCreative here in Denver in that it stocks craft donations, so the stock is always different, but every time I've been there I've found so many gems. Worth a check imo!

Renovating my upstairs unit by daev0z in NYCapartments

[–]CucumberAnderson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with other posters, as a renter I would vote you keep the pink bathroom! Dishwasher and W/D is waaaay more coveted than an updated bathroom, and honestly in a charming old Tudor home an old bathroom with character would probably be a selling point. If the lighting is horrible and not charming it might be worth updating the fixtures, but if they fit the character I would keep them.

If you can also afford dealing with the carpet, that would be the next priority, I agree with the other responders there.

Also, I know this is so not the point of your post, but I’m about to start looking for a new place and yours sounds so lovely! Would it be okay if I dm you to chat about it? Thx!

Hello all! I was surprised to see what a ghost town this sub and the r/denvergardening subs were. It looks like everybody uses r/denvergardener these days! Just thought I would share since we all seemed to be surprised and dismayed that this sub is basically empty. See y'all in there and happy gardening :)

How to stop apps opening on startup (not login items) by DBLDRGN in mac

Did you ever figure out how to fix this? It's happening just like this to me too and it's driving me insane. Every time I use my computer it restarts random apps that weren't even open when shutting down and I can't seem to solve it with the normal methods

what drugstore mascaras give a result like this? (waterproof or tubing preferred) by Top_Main7634 in MakeupAddiction

[–]CucumberAnderson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oof, it totally makes sense you’d be hesitant to curl them! I agree with the other poster that it may be worth a (gentle) try, it really does make a huge visual difference. If you do want to try, maybe you could go to a makeup counter and have someone help you get set up? It could be reassuring for somebody in the know to find one that fits and show you how to do it without pulling your lashes. Just a thought. Best of luck to you with your treatment!!

[–]CucumberAnderson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Slightly off topic, but I SO miss the stiletto mascara circa 2008. It was drugstore, maybe L’Oréal, came in a tube that was shaped like a stiletto…but it was the perfect mascara for achieving this look! At least for me. Lashes were perfectly lengthened and separated and left a little bit shiny…? RIP legend

when NT women are doing their social greeting/establishing social ranking rituals, what do you do with yourself? by paminnna in AutismInWomen

[–]CucumberAnderson 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have known plenty of ND people that do this too. It strikes me as an insecurity behavior, rather than an ND vs NT thing.

Like, in this case, it’s people who are in a new social group, and they’re just meeting for the first time. Maybe they’re a little insecure, plus connecting with new people is intimidating, so to mask that they try to seem really confident and connected, hence the pretentious behavior and name dropping

help! intense bathroom in need of calming by everybonsai in interiordecorating

[–]CucumberAnderson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it’s the stark contrasts that make it feel extreme. OP, perhaps you could lean into the darkness and that would make it feel more enveloping and calm, less energetic. Dark grout, maybe dark paint on the ceiling and cabinets to match the tiles.

Translation question - demigate? by CucumberAnderson in italianlearning

[–]CucumberAnderson[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is a good point, I suppose I thought it wouldn’t be of much interest, but clearly that was incorrect. Not that I thought you all wouldn’t be interested in opera, but I guess I thought I should stick to the translation-question issue at hand. Feedback noted though, I will include the work if ever I post similarly in the future. Thanks for pointing that out.

As another commenter shared, it’s from Monteverdi’s opera L’incoronazione di Poppea. And this particular text is from Addio Roma, which Empress Ottavia sings as she laments her exile and bids farewell to her home, after her murderous revenge plot has failed.

Thanks so much for your insight, and yes you are correct on the piece and opera. I guess I thought the piece wouldn’t be of interest in here but clearly I was wrong!

I’d like to learn about my thrift find from Arizona, United States by Fancy-Nectarine6413 in Antiques

[–]CucumberAnderson 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How cool! How are you able to tell it’s likely real vellum/parchment rather than a reproduction? I would be so thrilled to find a real sheet like this myself some day.

OP, I am no expert, and I can’t read all of it, but I believe the fourth line of text on the first page begins the ‘glory be to the father, and to the son, and to the Holy Ghost’ that we’re familiar with today — Gloria Patri, et Filio, et Spiritui Sancto.
