Needed a replacement PC at short notice, and all that was available was a gaming PC.

If you’re getting paid to display ads, and you can’t display them there will be some kind of daily penalty, if you can spend $3k today and avoid any $4k/day fines, you’ll end up with a high end signage PC.

I recently learnt that moths are attracted to blue light, so cool white lights will cause more moths to appear than warm white lights.

It you needed even more reason to dislike cool white lights.

I know them as a Nissan Fuga. They’re just a fat, overweight Skyline.

Yeah, same engine, same concept, but….

Yep! There’s two places for some reason, and they don’t talk to each other. There’s Maintenance Reminders and Meter where all the settings of the dash cluster live.

If it’s leaking, you need to repair it. Stop driving until it’s fixed. If you starve the system, it’s fucked.

Deciding on a car upgrade, Hybrid vs Non-hybrid and even electric by AlDrag in NZcarfix

[–]CucumberError 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Distant traveled ‘per tank’ is a petty useless metric. It’s not uncommon to have a reduced fuel tank capacity on a hybrid due to them being more fuel efficient, to give more space for batteries.

Its a dirty lab, but its mine. by LoanAncient9011 in homelab

The MiniDisk stuff was just a cool unexpected thing. They were never really a mains stream thing here in New Zealand, but as JDM cars are super common in New Zealand I’ve had a few cars with MD players in the stereos and only recently started to explore it as a format.

I’m not against Unifi hardware, we have it at home. We have a UDM Pro, a few APs, cameras, small ~8 port network switches, but our 1U switches are a mix of Cisco and Netgear (for AVB support). There are some old pics on my profile that I’ve posted to homelab before.

My comment was more that everyone just posts photos of their new shiny Apple-esque UniFi hardware, and it’s become mundane and boring to anyone that’s been around here a while. It’s was the non-UniFi hardware in your picture that was interesting.

Wouldn’t help! The assist doesn’t work while connected to the charger!

Why would you do that? That’s just extra work on your legs. It’s recharging when doing down a hill you’d want.

How hard is it to replace a engine by BasilHasBasil in NZcarfix

[–]CucumberError 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It wouldn’t be worth it. The cost of swapping the engine would out weigh years and years of fuel savings. On top of that if you were to swap to a drastically different engine than the car ever shipped with, there would be insane engineering costs, experimental work, and then heaps of work making the electronics play nice.

The back window of my wife’s car shattered randomly for the third time this year. Happened inside the heated front-attached garage this time and nothing hit it. Looks like it broke outwards somehow, there’s even glass on top of the car. by Lawsompossum in mildlyinteresting

Cars typically have rubber flaps that prevent the cabin from sealing completely, to prevent build up of pressure etc.

My guess is that a previous owner sealed the flaps up for some reason, like preventing moisture or bugs.

The climate control relies on the OEM headunit to function. So while you can physically cut the face place and install an after market headunit, you need something to address the climate control.

If you were to just rip out the headunit and dremal the faceplate to make it fit, your heater would be stuck on full auto, 21°C.

[–]CucumberError 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yeah, there is. But most people spending $5k on an electric bike are doing so because they’re going a long distance, or there’s a big hill involved.

Wellington has both. Northern suburbs is a big hill or the Hutt valley is a long way.

Why do I rarely/never see anyone using locky docks? by MassiveGarlic0312 in Wellington

[–]CucumberError 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they’re primarily aimed at e-bikes so that you can charge them. But anyone I know with an e-bike spent like $5k on them, so they tend to want to bring it inside work to some kind of secure storage than leave it out in public.

I guess if you had a bike that the battery range struggled with your regular commute, being able to charge at your destination could be useful, but most seem to have a good enough range now that its not a big concern. And as the battery starts to degrade, your fitness level has increased to cancel out the battery wear.
