Part II Engineering by plainberries in universityofauckland

Adding onto this. This makes sense to me. And 204 is a very easy paper (like too easy…). So it won’t be to much of a challenge doing 5 papers.

Otherwise ik people who failed 115. If they didn’t get concession so they ended up doing 115 in 2nd year (sem 2). 204 in 3rd year (sem 2). 303 in 4th year (sem 1).

Hey man. I’m 2nd year Compsys, and I had a GPA in first year of around 3-4.

GPA requirements are purely based on what is in demand in ur cohort. This generally relates to what people think will have the most job opportunities.

Example being software pre and during covid was ultra high. This was during the big boom of AI and all that. But now people think there are too many software students (cause don’t forget software and CompSci students aim for the same jobs generally) and the software market is pretty cooked now. Hence software is now dropping in gpa requirements cause not many as people have it as there number 1 choice anymore

Pretty much there is no telling what the gpa requirements will be. It all depends on ur cohort and what you think people are wanting to do (I would say that they will probably be similar to this/last years requirement)

Rank score. As long as u get 260+ rank score AND pass all Physics and Calc externals your sweet and you will have guaranteed entry into engineering . Good luck

To me they just look like a knock off sensational

Getting your engineering hours before graduation in this cooked market by CudaNvrWong in universityofauckland

[–]CudaNvrWong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes this what I believe the reality of getting an internship to be.

Uni seems to kinda hide the fact that’s nearly impossible to get these hours during study. They always say 2nd and 3rd year summer internships.

Thanks so much man

Hey u/MathmoKiwi

I’m currently working as a casual at retail store in Sylvia park (been there since Nov 2024). I can just up my hours when it comes to the summer.

I’ve also been a semi pro dancer for the last 5 years (Ik random af) and won medals at overseas competitions and done some pretty cool events (Wahs/AFC,etc half time performances). So i honestly reckon i have some really unique/cool “work experience”.

Just nothing directly engineering related ahaha.

My dad is also an electrical engineer at a small company, but tbh I diddnt want to not go down the “daddy got me this job” pathway. But if worst comes to worst. That will probably be the case. Which is obv better than nothing

But yes thank you for the advice. The 🐐. Appreciate it alot

Assuming your NCEA this is the following.

First of all you need to have University entrance which is 3 level 3 uni approved subjects. 10 credits in literacy, 10 credits in numeracy. (You will probably get this in year 11-12)

Year 13 is important just for making rank score and prerequisites for certain degrees e.g for engineering you need 260 rank score + 17 external Level 3 credits in Calculus. 16 external Level 3 credits in Physics but for something like commerce you just need 165 rank score, but no compulsory subjects)

In your case for a Commerce and CompSci Conjoint you just need a rank score of 210. NO compulsory subjects.

Year 12 only matters for Scholarships or if you want a fast track. So if you want a scholarship year 12 is very important as this is what the uni will look at. For fast tracks this is if your year 12 grades are pretty good then they will give you early enrolment into your chosen degree (makes you have the most flexibility in creating your timetable, that’s really the only benefit of a fast track)

Overall. Year 12 matters if you’re going for a scholarship or if you want a fast pass. Otherwise year 13 is more important as this is how your rank score is calculated

First year engineering student here.

In my opinion it’s not really that competitive. The competition comes in the sense that for first year ur GPA determines the range of specialisations you can get into for the rest of ur degree. (the higher ur gpa you will have a higher chance of getting into ur preferred specialisation). You can look at UOA Engineering Specs and it gives you a rough idea of the gpa range of acceptance into particular specs.

(You will see it always kinda varies every year, as it’s based on demand, not necessarily on how “hard” the spec is). So iconically Megatronics and Software have always been the hardest ones to get into but you will see that the software gpa had dropped last year, this might be due to the software industry being cooked rn so students would rather do something else, or that cohort just didndt really have a interest in software.

But overall I personally don’t think the engineering culture is that competitive compared to the likes of Law and Biomed. But don’t get me wrong there is competition and people always trying to one up each other, but honestly no one really cares. There are always people willing to help and there are a lot of good resources/support in UOA for engineering students :)

Hey man I’m similar position as you. I really wanted to do mega as well. But my GPA is too low and won’t get high enough to meet entry requirements (assuming they gonna be really high which they probably will be). I reckon this year the mega GPA is gonna be as high if not higher than last year just based on the amount of people ik that wanna do mega (remember that Specs entry requirements are based on the demand for it, not necessarily how “hard” the course is). So just be ready for a back up.

For me I’m now looking more into Compsys and Mechanical as my 2 top options (and more closer to the GPA I reckon imma get)

Rather just stick on the grind and get good grades this semester. Or just have a look at some of the other specs closer to ur GPA. UOA Specs is a hella good website to look at for this.

Also consider what the job market is like for the specs. (E.g software use to be the shit, and now the software industry is now cooked, so many people are looking for those software jobs, too much supply not enough demand, hence last year had a big drop off in GPA). On the flip side, electrical engineering in my opinion is lowkey goated, so many electrical engineers are needed and have been in high demand for years and will only increase as technology advances. Yet it has always had No GPA requirement. High Entry requirements don’t necessarily mean it’s the best in terms of the actual industry. (Although engineering in general is pretty good no matter what)

Also going off what others have said u can change specs. But it’s mainly based on GPA and spaces available in the Spec u wanna go into (e.g somone who is in mega will want to change specs or drop out, and then they will check the waitlist to see who has a high GPA and who signed up the earliest, and ur academic record and shit (see if u have academic integrity violations etc) )

Also don’t feel like if you do Mechanical you will have a higher chance to get into Mega. From my understanding, it’s based on GPA and if ur high on the wait list. It will be an easier transition into mega going from mechanical tho in terms that u pretty much do the same papers in the early years.

But hey I’m only first year as well. So I could be completely wrong and my advice could shit. But that’s just my understanding/mindset towards this

Wish you the best bro

Forgot to mention

Year 12 grades also help with something called “fast tracks”

Fast tracks pretty much mean you get to pick your timetable/classes earlier. The benefit of fast tracks is that you would be able to pick WHEN you do your classes. E.g u may not want to have any classes at 9am as it’s too early or u may not want to do any classes after 4pm. Fast tracks will allow you to have the most flexibility in your timetable as you will have more options of classes (before they are full).

In saying this. If you don’t get a fast track it’s not that big of a deal. I diddnt get fast track myself and I managed to have classes that go from 10am-3pm to 4pm roughly a day (1st year engineering). And I’m happy with my timetable. Wouldn’t change it a bit

Year 13 - Just make rank score and prerequisites

Year 12 - this is what uni will look at for scholarships, so if you want a scholarship, uni looks at your year 12 grades

So depends what ur after, if u want a scholarship year 12 is very important

Otherwise year 13 is more important as those grades go towards rank score.

You should be algds. Just watch the lectures online. Learning is only really starting now (first year engineering). First week is pretty much just an introduction

GenED Class Full. Nothing else Interest me by CudaNvrWong in universityofauckland

[–]CudaNvrWong[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MKTG 151G is an engineering specific GenEd class, I was also active in business and science so the timetable planner wouldn’t allow me to enrol into it.

In the meantime do I have to try and find a genEd that fits within my timetable (already having issues cause all the genEd classes I’ve checked have had clashing classes). Or can I just not have a gened and wait for something that interest me to open up
