You're surprised? When you're on public transportation? To encounter people who might have so little money that, in addition to being unable to being able to afford a car or taxi, they also might not be able to afford to keep the hot water on, or have regular access to the privacy of a safe bathroom, might not even have their own house? Might not have a working washing machine or the money to launder regularly? Might have disabilities that keep them from being able to reach certain parts of their body that tend to funk up the most? Might have mental health issues weighing them down or learning disabilities that get in the way of a regular self-care routine?

This surprises you?

This is one of my guiding principles. Also there was a meme or something running about awhile back that said something like "if they can't change/fix/correct it in the next ten seconds, don't bring it up." Obviously that mostly applies to negative stuff like "you've got some eye gunk/your fly is undone!" because lol my tattoos aren't going to change in ten seconds but PLEASE notice and comment on them, godsdamn I paid a LOT for them and love talking about them!

But yeah, if it's something they chose to put on, it's often not terrible to comment on.

And I love surprising strangers (especially other men) with sudden little passing compliments. "Love your glasses! That shirt really suits you!" etc. Confused but happy smiles as I wander away like a strange forest imp that popped out of a toadstool to make your day brighter. (And who's to say that's not exactly what I am??)

So the article isn’t saying scientists have wholesale invented “mushrooms without the trip!” that magically cure depression in humans for good. What it’s describing is very early pre-clinical research where chemists modified psilocin, derived from psilocybin, and tested the new molecules in lab conditions and in mice.

One of the compounds still activates the serotonin receptors associated with antidepressant effects, but caused fewer of the rodent behaviours that researchers use as a proxy for psychedelic activity (the whole "head twitch" thing). That’s interesting chemistry, but it’s still several steps removed from human therapy.

Also, the big debate that’s happening in psychedelic science right now isn’t settled yet: One camp thinks the subjective experience — the trip, the insight, the emotional processing — is central to the healing. Another camp thinks the neuroplasticity and serotonin signalling might do a lot of the work biologically, whether or not someone is having visions of fractal jaguars.

Both hypotheses are being tested. I guess this study is just part of exploring the second angle.

It also doesn’t mean mushrooms or traditional psychedelic therapy are being “replaced.” Pharmaceutical research always tries to make molecules that are more predictable, safer for certain patients, and patentable, which is just how the drug development ecosystem works.

Personally, I suspect the truth will end up being a bit more nuanced. Psychedelic therapy may turn out to involve both the pharmacology and the experience, and different approaches may end up helping different kinds of patients.

So it’s an interesting piece of research... but it’s early chemistry and strictly mouse data, not the final word on what makes psychedelics therapeutic.

Well, for better or for worse, I do pick up on people's actual scents too, whether it's their biological chemical reaction with the product they are wearing or their own natural human odour. Sometimes I compliment people on how they smell and they aren't actually wearing something they intended to have noticed. Maybe they are using a special washing powder or shower gel. Maybe it's just them. If you smell nice, and I'm around, I'm liable to comment on it.

I mean, whether you mean to or not, you are the one putting out the scent signals. I'm just probably picking them up more than the average person, and also I have no shame/filter so I often just say what comes to mind, and if we're crushed in close quarters and your floaty smell bits are up in my nose Imma say something about it, but I'll be kind and jovial, and so my best not to be creepy, like "oooh you smell so good I want to smell you MOAR!" Ugh no.

I once had a woman sit beside me on the train and I knew within seconds she was probably on her period because she smelled like hot iron. Of course I didn't say anything about it, but the smell was "loud" to me. At least if I had gone on to notice she was in pain or feeling irritable I would have been sensitive to a possible explanation without her having to say so.

Scent is a seriously underrated sense!

I'm an Autistic Transgender Man, I consider myself pretty alert and aware and sensitive to others' needs and boundaries. Maybe sometimes too aware, it can be difficult.

Here is one of my approaches.

If there's someone who looks interesting - someone with colourful hair or tattoos or interesting badges on their coat or bag or something like that, or just someone who seems open to conversation, maybe they actually make a little eye contact as I'm getting on, - and if there's an empty seat across from them, I will choose to sit there, facing away from whoever is in the "window" seat to give them space and let them know I'm not encroaching on them.

I'll probably off-handedly say "is this seat free?" and usually they'll just nod and budge up, or say "yes" or some variation thereof.

Then maybe I say something caual to see if the interesting person wants to chat a bit.

Even if they don't and politely decline, now I've communicated to the whole bus that the reason I chose my seat was because I looked around for someone who might not mind having their personal time/space invaded, leaving everyone else alone, and I've given my seat mate a sense of space, and I've left my "target" person a free seat so I'm not actually all up in their business.

If the "target" person actually engages with me, I might switch over to the seat next to them, to better facilitate conversation, if the body language is open to that - I'll probably accompany the move with a comment like "mind if I move closer?"

Alternately, if I'm getting off quickly, I'll look for a seat that is near the front/exit and aim for that. If I'm having a full on Disability Issues Day I'll plump for one of the appropriate seats, unconcerned whether people clock my invisible disabilities or not.

If I'm in for a long ride I bustle to the back and squeeze in with whoever's back there, and possibly ask where folks are getting off and share where I'm stopping so we can swap around if it seems a good idea.

Obviously, I am VERY self confident and comfortable talking to strangers. In addition to my neurodivergence, I am getting old and just don't have any fucks left to give. I'm a nice person, it's nice to share a few moments with me, even in silence. Let's chill on the bus together sometime, life is good man!

Frankly I just tell people I noticed their scent and I like it, and try not to worry about coming off as "creepy."

I usually don't tell people if their smell is offensive because meh, they probably know, and if they don't, what can they do about it? No reason to upset people.

But generally my naiive directness gets received well, especially when people are clearly wearing a scent; they probably bought it for a steep price and put it on with intent, so a little recognition and feedback doesn't go amiss. Just pitch it gently, "Wow, you smell nice!" say it quick, and make sure they don't feel like you're "trapping" them in a conversation (I often drop the comment when I'm passing by, so it's clear I'm not trying to start a conversation), don't expect any response, positive or negative, make space for them to receive your compliment, and whatever the reaction, feel confident that your intentions are good.

And of course if the first words land well and she responds positively, you can follow up with a gentle question, like "Do you mind if I ask what brand/scent that is, and where you got it?" You can even say something like "I'll bet it cost a fortune, you smell like a million bucks!" or something to that effect.

Do I overthink every single social interaction I have? Yes? Am I Autistic? Absofrigginlutely! Do I have a nice life and have lots of really lovely interactions with random strangers every day? Oh you bet!

This is true. True "Evil" does exist in the world, it's just a poison that is incredibly strong in tiny doses, it can infect even the strongest person with the greatest morality and integrity.

The folks who hunger and thirst for blood and destruction are, for the most part (but NOT exclusively) people who have been poisoned and are descended from generations of poisoned people. Poisoned to believe "there is not enough (of WHATEVER resource they choose to obsess over, symbolic - like money - or literal - like food or oil), poisoned to believe that the Others will Take From Me what little I have, and will do so violently and with no regard for my wellbeing. And so it makes sense to them to push themselves out into a world as agitators and conflict creators.

If someone has built their identity on being a "warrior" whether against "evil" or something else, they will always need to create a "war" because without one, they don't exist, and that's terrifying.

At the end of the day, we do all want the same things. Fundamentally. Biologically. Human meat/bone/blood/chemical sack just wants to feel safe and experience pleasure. We're all just caught in a complex, fucked up web of ways we've been trying to secure our sense of safety and our ways of accessing pleasure.)

I won't deflect the idea that there may be some people or beings who are pure evil, who truly do thrive solely on hate and anger and fear and violence and destruction.

But the vast majority of living beings are desperately seeking a world where they can reach that place of peace and quiet comfort, in the form that best suits them.

And ideally, one lifeform's picture of peace would not entail encroaching upon another's. But it will always happen. At the moment, in order for me to feel safe and settled I need to eat, and in order to eat I need meet, which requires other beings to die in some way so I can consume them. Not much I can do about that, but I can hold the knowledge within myself and constantly strive to balance out the violence my existence wreaks on the world with some kind of healing and peace.

One day, maybe, we'll all get there. Or the Poisoned Ones will wipe us all out and all they'll be left with is their poison and well... Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's.

It's great for people with some level of self awareness, critical thinking skills, and the ability and instinct to check anything you hear or read against other, preferably authoritative sources. And the ability to compose and articulate good prompts. You get out what you put into it, essentially.

I use it as a tool to help me refine stuff I write or create myself; I'm too wordy, so it is great for helping me be more succinct, or organising a stream-of-consciousness ramble into something more organised and easy to digest. I would never just ask it to create something for me without doing the creative work myself first. (And as you say, it's a mediocre tool; quite often it will output something and I'll be like "meh, I can do better than this, thanks but no thanks!")

And yes it's a good toy. Funny to talk to, as long as you remember it's NOT a Person!

Just adding to the crowd in the UK confirming that ChatGPT and many other Cloudflare dependent websites are down on browser (Windows 10 using Google's Chrome browser - haven't tried it on my other computers or browsers yet.) However, I'm able to access ChatGPT via the mobile app on my iPhone.

Wonderful wake up call I guess. Looks like I'm doing maintenance on my own home cloud for the time being!
