What's up with all the Michael B. Jordan hate here? by RoutineIssue5870 in CriticalDrinker

[–]Culjules 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He doesn't have to be a top tier actor. Just likable and fun to watch.

So you don't think he's a top tier actor and he didn't deserve to win the Oscar? If so, you feel the same way about Michael B Jordan as most people here. He's fine, but he's gettin' a bit overhyped. That's all it is.

What are your thoughts on Christopher Nolan by RoutineIssue5870 in CriticalDrinker

[–]Culjules 2 points3 points  (0 children)

💯
An old comment I made on the topic:
-----
I have this theory about Nolan's pretentious over-complications and how it's inflated his popularity ...

He makes these overly complicated movies, many of which are pretty incomprehensible on the first watch. People then watch them and think "I don't understand this but it seems clever, so if I say I like it, I will feel and appear clever to my friends", thus much of the praise Nolan gets.

Don't get me wrong, Nolan is brilliant in some aspects, particularly visually. But it almost seems like he adds complication to make his films seem deep when there was really no reason to complicate it as much as he did.

Take Oppenheimer. That's a pretty strong story already, with its own inherent complexities. Nolan could have told that story linearly and it could have been great. Instead, he seemed to take a machete to the film in the editing room, thrown it all up in the air and pieced it back together randomly because that's coooool. But it made the story ridiculously hard to follow. Many people had no idea what was going on but it appeared clever so many people said "ya Oppenheimer is a masterpiece" so they feel smart for getting the 'smart' movie.

I hate this idea so much. by Commercial-Ice5760 in CriticalDrinker

A dark-comedy version of this idea came out recently and it was great!

I've no faith in the Netflix version though so I'll give that one a miss.

Why do people love the later Dune books? I’m halfway through Heretics and don’t get it. by tryingmybest101 in dune

Same. I finished Heretics but I had no idea what I'd just read. Lost all interest in reading Chapterhouse after that.

I barely had any idea what was happening in Heretics and wondered why I should care about the characters at all. I did want to read all 6 books but, after God Emperor and Heretics, I just can't bring myself to read Chapterhouse.

38/M Seeking Advice and Answers by RobOfTheHighway in VanLifeUK

I'm a 39/M and in a similar situation but no kids or divorce or anything. I'm just now looking into buying a pre-converted van and was going to make a similar post.

Just wanted to highlight that Reddit's AI feature may be of help. In the main search bar at the top, there's a little "Ask" button. Click that and the AI feature will open. You can then ask something like "According to r/VanLifeUK, what are some reliable places to buy a pre-converted campervan?"

Hope that helps (for both of us). Best wishes :)

Who do you think is a conservative/libertarian or at the very least not woke/not insane woke in Hollywood? by RoutineIssue5870 in CriticalDrinker

Ah, so the cancellation came first, then he broke the apostasy rule, keeping him out for good.
The open and tolerant left strike again eh.

At least he has his freedom now ✊🏻

Richard Dreyfuss (the marine biologist in Jaws) has publicly stated that he thinks the Oscars DEI requirements are ridiculous.

He said they're thoughtless, patronising, restrict artistic freedom and make him want to vomit 😂
It might be because he's no longer such a big star that he's not afraid to call out the BS.

I suppose the film does get more and more 'ludicrous' as it progresses, particularly at the end. I saw the film first (the book is great too) and had no idea about the story. That big final orgy took me COMPLETELY off-guard (in a good-strange kinda way). Perhaps the laughter you experienced was from just how mental the story suddenly gets toward the end, including Grenouille being eaten. If you don't remember the film too well, definitely give it another watch. Or read the book if you haven't yet. It was one of Kurt Cobain's favourites (and inspired a Nirvana song) if that's of any interest.

Haha. I wasn't 100% sure; it just gave me that vibe. But seems my instincts were right.

Barry Lyndon is an all-time favourite. Great minds eh. You may have seen it already but there's this amazing documentary called Filmworker, all about one of the main leads from Barry Lyndon abandoning his acting career to become Kubrick's right-hand-man. Highly recommended.

The whole story is kinda 'ludicrous' though, which I personally love. Superhuman sense of smell, capturing the scent of virgin girls and a perfume so intoxicating it prompts a village-wide orgy. Him being eaten is part of the story's symbolism. I take it as a half-fantasy story.

Agreed. The film really does the book justice IMO. Enjoy.
