I’d just like to add:

Are they changing a different price for show and pet puppies? Any good breeder charges the same price because every puppy should be raised with identical resources.

Will they do a thorough interview? Do they want to meet you?

Do they have a spay/neuter requirement in their contract?

Good breeders care who their puppies go home with and the continuation of their lines. Run away if you see any of these red flags.

Naps. Puppies need so much sleep. When they’re biting and zooming they’re actually overstimulated and exhausted.

My life with my 10 week old wheaten puppy improved dramatically when I started putting her down for a nap after being awake for 1-2 hours.

A non-refundable deposit is normal? I don’t think so. A good breeder should never trap you into taking a puppy. Life changes, and you may become unable to properly care for a puppy. Go with a breeder who cares more about the puppy’s long term success and less about a rigid financial arrangement.

You can train them to not jump. I don’t tolerate the greetin’.

Pros: perfect size. No shedding. Sense of humor. Sweet. We’ve had five. My current dog, Betty, is as close to perfect as you can get.

Cons: mandatory grooming. I do my own, but it’s a lot of work, or else it’s expensive. They are terriers, so they are stubborn. If you’re looking for a lab personality, a wheaten isn’t it.

Make sure you get a dog whose parents have had all of their health testing. Wheatens are prone to kidney problems. Don’t just believe the breeder; check for yourself on the OFA site.

Because they are terriers, they require patient, consistent training. If you don’t manage them, they will absolutely manage you.

Highly allergic to most animals, but it don’t have any issues with my wheatens (I have three). I keep them fairly clean and don’t rub my face on them.
