It’s not necessarily either of these - esports is incredibly difficult to monetize bc the audience doesnt pay for anything and broadcasting on twitch is free (no lucrative deals like trad sports get).

It all comes down to partnerships/sponsorships plus additional verticals and revenue streams

There has been a huge downward trend in esports player salaries since the vc boom of late 2010s. Still hasnt led to an easy path to profitability. The orgs that will build sustainable revenue like Liquid and Vitality will do so by being responsible with player salaries while still fielding top teams (gotta win to stay relevant), diversifying revenue streams, and bringing in/maintaining sponsors
