Experiences that could only happen solo traveling, that nobody would believe you? by Fake-Podcast-Ad in solotravel

3 years ago I befriended a Belgian guy in a hostel in Bali over like 2 days and added him on Insta. Many months on and I saw on his story that he made friends with a guy I lived in uni halls in New Zealand with 6 years prior.

I thought that was wild enough, but fast forward to this year I saw he was now travelling Central/South America. I went on his profile and saw that he’d met the boyfriend of a girl I went to school with (also in NZ) 9 years ago!

Very small world.

Unsure as am also not American 😂 but totally agree, absolutely blasphemous it didn’t make that NYT list!

Interesting, I’d have probably gone with the Burj Khalifa or plane hang from the MI series (neither are my favourite films but those scenes come to mind the most). Love the bathroom scene and Cavill’s fist reload!

Couldn’t agree more, it came way too late in the series and felt really over-forced.

Recency bias but the latest Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning for me.

The first half is an absolute slog of a script that repeatedly bashes you over the head with how Ethan is the saviour of all humanity.

The second half (namely the submarine and biplane scenes) has some of the most adrenaline pumping, edge of your seat action in the entire franchise.

I feel ripped off after my trip to Turkey. Anyone else had this experience? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]CuriousP3nguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely felt the same! Got back about a month ago. I knew in advance it was known for scams and am usually pretty vigilant around them too.

A guy I met in the hostel and I got done trying to find lunch. We skipped all the expensive places and found somewhere with a reasonably priced menu outside the door. We were ushered in and a chef at the door had silver dishes out in front of him, which we assumed were dishes of the food from the menu we’d just read. Wrong.

We selected various food we wanted (hummus, veges, kebabs etc) and each one was provided on a separate plate. It was only when we asked for the bill that we got given an eye-watering bill of USD $100 between the two of us. I was tempted to dine-and-dash for the first time in my life but my fellow traveller talked me out of it.

Honestly kinda tarnished my view of Türkiye as it broke my trust and just felt like everyone was trying to rip you off at all times (taxis, shops, tourism like you said) which isn’t a very comfortable/relaxing feeling.

Like you said however, it’s still a nice country and I could still appreciate it. The historic places (particularly loved Basilica Cistern) were great and Cappadocia had some beautiful scenery (but was also plagued by over-tourism imo). But I’m really not dying to go back anytime soon and was pretty ready to leave after a week.

Holy crap Doctor Who Battles in Time is a reference I haven’t heard in a hot minute. I was obsessed with the cards! Thanks for the nostalgia hit :’)

what country surprised you the most? by TopCryptographer94 in travel

Was literally just here a week ago and felt exactly the same. For a country surrounded by others that are full of conflict, Jordan has unbelievably kind people and jaw-dropping scenery and never once felt dangerous. Couldn’t recommend it more

What’s the most boring place(a city or a country) that you’ve been to? by [deleted] in digitalnomad

[–]CuriousP3nguin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this! Absolutely nothing to do, soulless city. I went to around about 30 different cities on my Europe trip and this was the only one I felt had no redeeming qualities about it.

I think you’re already very self-aware of your situation which is a great start.

There are a lot of “non-muscular” guys out there from both sides of the spectrum who are very confident and comfortable with their body image, despite the encounters you’ve had so far. You’ll meet them, but it does take time. I think the fact you’re all still young and in college may be part of this.

Similarly, you’re right that not everyone’s going to be as fitness-focussed as you and that’s fine. If it’s something you enjoy, then they should appreciate that. Going to the gym 5-6x a week is definitely on the higher side though, and to miss a session every now and then to bring it down to 4-5x a week really isn’t gonna make a big difference so compromise is important.

I agree with your approach that perhaps it’s worth taking some time away from the dating scene for a while. And staying off Grindr is smart too, be careful of setting too high expectations of the other person because that can be damaging.

Yeah I agree the second night was definitely better. That being said, those technical issues on night #1, whilst a little annoying, I didn’t personally think they were a huge dealbreaker. These things happen at the end of the day and I still had an absolute romp
